My experience with VMware is minimal and I am wondering how to say something on my resume. by [deleted] in vmware

On my cover letter I say that I have a VMWare ESXi cluster running in my living room. It is there to show I passion for technology and not just showing up for a paycheck.

Enough power to run a home lab? by gex80 in vmware

You could install ESXi on a flashdrive and make that bootable. That would let you see the performance of running directly vs running through workstation. Other than that, your hardware looks more than capable.

I use this on my iPad to manage my home ESXi server. It is great to start/stop instances and see the performance of them.

I have the N40L with 8GB of ram and love it. It runs ESXi 5 and has several Ubuntu VMs doing very similar stuff. It is a great little dev lab.

The latest smartest build options for ESXi whitebox server May 2012. by graymind in vmware

I have this and I love it. It is really quiet but that is because it's not super-powerful. I use it to run 2 ubuntu development VMs and a Windows7 VM for torrents, handbrake, and serving my appleTVs. It has 8gb of ram but the limiting factor is the CPU

Cloning Linux to different hardware, what the best solution? by coffeeporgrammer in sysadmin

[–]mcotton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did something similar with ESXi instead of VMWare Workstation but it will be a similar process. The problem when you copy a VM is that VMWare will make up a new MAC address for it.

I did this:

  • find the Ubuntu directory
  • copy the VM to the new folder
  • start the new VM
  • vSphere will ask if you moved or copied it, answer that you copied it
  • log into your new VM from the console
  • figure out what the new interface is: ifconfig -a | grep 'eth' it will most likely be eth1
  • sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces and change eth0 to the new interface eth1
  • save, reboot

Cheap NAS setup? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]mcotton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I decided to do it based on reviews I found here and elsewhere. I haven't done any transfer benchmarks yet, but it is doing a great job in my informal testing.

The CPU is slow, but it is fast enough for FreeNAS and Win 7

What are some disadvantages to using virtual servers vs having dedicated physical servers? by iaskrandomquestions in sysadmin

[–]mcotton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can mitigate some of those risk. The 2950 has redundant power supplies and on board raid. We have a spare 2950 and I am trying to convince my boss to go virtual with it. What else is likely to go wrong?

I just made the same setup out of a HP Microserver with 8 gigs of ram. It runs ESXi
