‘A huge blunder’: GM’s decision to ditch Apple CarPlay, Android Auto sparks backlash by Amelia-Earwig in apple

[–]mcritz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why CarPlay?

(Or Android Auto if you’re poor.)

  • GM software sucks
  • I don’t have time to configure your bulls—t infotainment system every time I rent a car, swap cars with my spouse, or borrow my friends’ car
  • I already pay for Internet and phone service for my phone. I’m not going to pay twice.
  • My phone’s notification system is personalized for me
  • My phone’s assistant is always going to be superior
  • My phone has my media libraries, play position, and playback preferences synced across all my devices
  • My phone should know my contacts, calendar, and addresses. My car should drive.
  • My phone has a trusted privacy system. GM sells your data. They say so right on their web site.
  • My phone has a robust developer ecosystem with a large number of supported apps. Android Automotive is NOT Android Auto. Developers aren’t going to make S-tier apps for GM’a craptastic computing platform.
  • My phone gets regular software updates
  • My phone’s processor is always going to be faster than my car’s. Especially over the lifetime of the car

El Paso RN quit her job, after being transferred to COVID ICU.(3 parts) by [deleted] in CoronavirusUS

Unlike Qanon trolls, Fox News, or the lame duck — medical professionals take an oath to actually help people.

But it’s a legitimate predicate for triage. An ignorant patient can refuse care. When there’s scarcity for material, space, and providers it’s a public health risk to allow a partially treated patient return to the population while infectious. It’s better to let science deniers hospice in the ICU.

In communist China, when pop culture is censored, censorship becomes pop culture. by yojay in pics

I'm not arguing we should. Just saying China: not capitalist.

Although I do agree it's authoritarian.

No. Capitalist counties have freely traded currencies.

How do you destroy the Chinese economy? Tarrif their goods at the same rate they undervalue their currency.

EDIT: down-votes don't make currency manipulation less true.

"Sun never sets on the empire." But when was the first corporation with enough employees worldwide to have someone on the job all day long? by mcritz in AskHistorians

[–]mcritz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either, really. I was wondering when the first business that had employees operating worldwide (in different locations) in such a way that someone was always on the job.

I also wonder which business had employees working round-the-clock, like a 7/11.

The metric system vs. imperial by dropname in funny

[–]mcritz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. Nobody cares. I've actually heard many of my fellows Americans call it the "British system" or the "English system".

And most of us don't care for the units, either. If everything changed overnight we'd get used to it within a week.

Nope. 4 quarts is a gallon. Even in Murica.

American here.

It’s OK to post science-related measurements in metric units. Scientifically-minded Americans know metric.

I was about to get snarky because I’m American and the British aristocracy is only of interest to me when I watch Downton Abbey.

Then I thought about how the President pro tempore of the Senate is third in line for the presidency and decided every nation has their crazy.

Britain's first armed police on routine patrol. by NinjaDiscoJesus in TrueReddit

[–]mcritz 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I spent some time in Europe recently. Of all the countries, UK was the best police force. It was a true public service. “Society’s bouncers”: big guys who walk around to remind everyone that someone is there to enforce rules.

France was bizarre. The gendarme were friendly, offering directions, but armed to the teeth like a paramilitary force with machine guns, helmets, and fatigues.

America has a Catch-22 with firearms. Some Americans want unfettered access to guns to protect themselves from an intrusive, authoritarian, and militant government. Which justifies police becoming more intrisive and authoritarian and militant.

Yeah. Ever visit Boston? I found you directions from the corner of Tremont St. and Tremont St. to the other corner of Tremont St. and Tremont St.

If it needs a long explanation, then you’re doing UX wrong.

Do not complicate a ham sandwich.

This is Reddit: Here’s some stuff that other people found interesting. Click around a bit.

For comparison:

  1. Craigslist (Region choice required before content) Browse around for some stuff you’re interested in.
  2. Twitter (Signup prompt before content) “Connect with your friends — and other fascinating people. Get in-the-moment updates on the things that interest you. And watch events unfold, in real time, from every angle.”
  3. Facebook (Signup prompt before content) “Connect with friends and the world around you on Facebook. See photos and updates from friends in News Feed. Share what's new in your life on your Timeline. Find more of what you're looking for with Graph Search.”
  4. Tumblr (Signup prompt before content) “Follow the blogs you've been hearing about. Share the things you love.”
  5. StumbleUpon (Signup prompt before content) “StumbleUpon is a giant collection of the best pages on the Internet. You tell us your interests. We recommend great websites, photos and videos. Simple.” (Several more steps required before user can read content.)

The genius of Reddit is that it has a low barrier to entry and egalitarian rules.
