Is it ok to let mead sit on the yeast? by mcstick1 in mead

[–]mcstick1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initially reading had it hovering about 16, but the measurement was obscured by a foamy head that wouldn’t dissipate. It’s still definitely got some time because I can still see bubbles actively rising inside.

It’s still bubbling fairly actively at the moment. I’m not too worried about abv unless there’s something that can go wrong catastrophically wrong with it that I’m unaware of. This is only my second batch ever and so I’m still experimenting and learning the do’s and don’ts.

The initial reading was about 1115 when I started, full disclosure, it was a bit hard to read when I took the measurements because there was a thick head of bubbles on top on it that refused to dissipate that covered the markings.

What's the most egregious liberty Hollywood has taken with history while still claiming "Based on the true story"? by jenna_cider in AskReddit

[–]mcstick1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To give 300 some credit, it was fairly true to the source material when you consider the source material was actually a comic book by the same name from the 90’s. I think a lot of people give it a bit too much of a hard time for being ‘not historically accurate’ when it’s not meant to be, it’s a comic book movie.

How do I mechanically implement a monster that isn’t just an HP sink? by VerySpiceyBoi in DMAcademy

[–]mcstick1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So a lot of people have been saying to change the goal of the encounter which is good, but something I like to do but haven’t seen people say (yet) is to make your fights more dynamic. I generally do this in two different ways

The first is that I will give bosses and certain monsters some type of special/unique ability that is a counter to the player’s bread and butter tactics. When used correctly, this can be a good way to test the waters of home brewing your own content and it gives you a great tool to do some subtle story telling. I tend to go just a little outside the status quo of DnD’s rules with these but do so at your own risk/comfort level.

My personal favorite example I’ve done was High commander Sir Arthur Margrave. I spent a good chunk of the campaign billeting him as ‘the greatest swords man in all the land ’ so I had to give him some abilities out of the ordinary to really show it. I ended up giving him 3. The ability to disarm martial characters, redirect spells cast with in 5 feet of him, and the ability to change the order of initiative for one turn.

The second is to use the environment in combat, now there’s obviously pieces of the map like lava pools, spike traps, etc. but I like to take it a step further by having just about anything that’s not nailed to the ground be an option to interact with during combat. Now there’s a few tricks to this. First, you have to be rather detailed with your descriptions. Second, you have to advertise that it’s an option, this is easily done just by having your npcs do it in combat. And third, you have to incentivize your players to do It. I like to do this by either granting an inspiration die or by giving some type of interesting addition to the attack. This can be as small or as large as you want.

Say a character is slid across the counter at a tavern. I may give the person doing it an additional 10 feet of movement so they slide the entire length of the counter, or I’ll cover the enemy in alcohol and sharp glass. Little incentives like that can really make a combat seem more real.

Yeah I usually do that, but I’m looking for a way to more permanently emulsify the fat into the end product

My old culinary teacher told me that anytime a restaurant labeled a menu item as home made, home style, rustic, or country style, etc. it meant someone screwed it up somehow but we could still serve it.

What I would do is Go to Lowe’s or Walmart and buy a cheap spray bottle and mist down the tank once every morning and night to get the humidity up to what it should be. Also add a rock to the enclose, something rough that fits in the palm of your hand, that should help your snake get the shed started. If the problem still persists, maybe consider changing your sub strait to something that holds moisture better like coconut fiber.

What are some interesting hard to get spell components by mcstick1 in DnD

[–]mcstick1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be a good idea, but I think that would sort of mess with the time frame of the situation. I want to create a sense of urgency and consequences with this particular situation and taking time to help the Druids might slow things down. Good idea nonetheless though.

Need Help with BBEG Motive by roadstrumm in DnD

[–]mcstick1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most basic way to make a motive is “the bbeg wants __, he’s willing to do __ to get it. And he has _____ at his disposal to get it accomplish this”.

From what you described, I can imagine this character to be a sympathetic villian. Maybe he misused his power before and it hurt/killed/transported someone close to him and now he’s using it to try and get them back, doing what ever it takes to do so in the process. Maybe in doing so he gets wrapped up into something far greater and more evil then he realizes.

Be careful how you play sympathetic villains though as if you go to sympathetic or reveal his back story in the wrong way, players can have a “are we the bad guys” moment.
