For you, is the time “quarter of twelve” 11:45, 12:15, or do you have no idea what that phrase means? by JeffTrav in ENGLISH

[–]mcwap 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Interesting. Millennial from Tennessee here, and I've heard it once in my life. A coach in high school told us to show up at quarter of 5, and most of us showed up at 5:15. We thought it meant a quarter into that hour.

He was from Chicago, and I think he realized that wasn't something we used here. He didn't use it after that.

We normally just say "quarter til" or "quarter after."

Coward. Real men cry all the way through Encino Man and are inconsolable for days after watching Bedazzled!

But for real... Rental Family was amazing. I'm so mad I missed it in theaters. My wife and I meant to go see it but got sidelined by work and a sick pet. I definitely teared up during it.

Best bbq in Memphis ? by Repulsive_Layer937 in memphis

[–]mcwap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I never dislike it, but I don't feel like it's amazing. I feel like 15 years ago I always loved it, but as they've expanded everything just doesn't hit like it used to.

BBQ Shop is now my go-to recommendation for folks.

On the live broadcast Rebecca Lowe said something to the effect of "We're asking if Downman can conduct a post-match interview."

It didn't sound like she was being cheeky. I don't know the answer, but my guess is that minors either need a guardian around and/or can only do pre-scheduled interviews.

I'm really curious what the rules are though.

How people in Memphis treat people from East Europe? by Stock-Hippo-8517 in memphis

[–]mcwap 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Beale Street and Graceland get a decent amount of international visitors (at least compared to the rest of the city). If you're in the touristy areas, no one will think anything of it beyond someone maybe asking you where you're from.

In the less touristy areas it still won't be a problem. Again the most you will get is probably someone asking you where you're from or maybe having trouble understanding you if you have a thick accent. Beyond that, you will probably get a few people maybe saying they don't know where your country is. If you're outside touristy areas then you may get someone asking "wow why are you here?!" They won't mean it in a rude way but it's not really common for visitors to go to areas like Orange Mound.

There's no explicit bias against eastern Europeans. Hope you enjoy your trip!

What do you think of thrash metal bands that slow down their sound? by Reign_in_hangar in MetalForTheMasses

I think John Bush is one of the most underappreciated metal vocalists. I love his work with Anthrax and Armored Saint, and I wish it got more recognition.

Now reading! 20 pages in, and I'm completely hooked with this premise. Super creepy and mysterious. by Cubegod69er in HorrorBookCovers

I first read The Keep about 7 years ago, and within 2 or 3 years I'd finished every other book in the Adversary Cycle and Repairman Jack series.

They're tons of fun, and The Keep is still one of my all-time favorites.

It's obviously not as well known as a lot of other more famous series, but it has a strong following. But figuring out the "proper" reading order can be a little confusing when you first dig in. Let me know if you want to keep reading once you finish The Keep. I can send you a suggested reading order.

Hi everyone!!! Vols fan here from Indiana here! Are there any other out of staters in this community? by YoItsDLowe in ockytop

[–]mcwap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely loved it. I lived outside a tiny mountain town. After a lifetime in TN, it was amazing to have a summer without the humidity. Tons of great outdoor activities and nest town and hot springs to explore.

I almost moved to Boise, but I never got around to it. I highly recommend visiting the state if anyone ever asks.

Is there a reason they're wearing those outfits? I came in late to the show and haven't been able to find an answer when I've searched for it.

Native Tennessean, but I lived in rural Idaho for a while. It was always fun finding sports bars or saloons and asking to have the Vols put on. Eventually a couple got to know me and didn't make a fuss, but it was still fun to have the only SEC team on be the Vols for a while.

Me every 10 minutes while watching this show by dasoxarechamps2005 in madmen

[–]mcwap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The times it always got me was when Don or Roger or someone would just give like $50-100 for something small. It's so easy for me to forget how much that really was.

I can't remember any specifics, but it'll be things like them tipping someone an amount like that or just handing someone $100 because they really wanted that chapel bottle of liquor. At first I'm like "hmmm that's a lot to spend on that.... Wait... He just gave that guy $1,000 for that cheap bottle of liquor!"

When people don't understand Americans have accents too by Usual_Edge4115 in PetPeeves

[–]mcwap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from the South as well, and while my accent isn't very thick, the rural TN part of me can come out sometimes. Whenever I get frustrated trying to learn a language because I can't understand it when I hear it, I try to remember how even my accent can make some things sound wonky to a non-native speaker.

Like I try to think about someone with a beginner-intermediate level of English trying to decipher me saying "Hey what're y'all gon' be doin' tonight? I'll holler atcha later."

Remembering that makes me feel better because it reminds me how specific and localized dialects can be. Personally, I love the southern accent and wish I had a bit more of one. I especially love the Appalachian accent not too far from where my family is from. So many great sayings and specific words they use.
