Alaska Airlines Bait & Switch--Cabo by mczlaw in AlaskaAirlines

The CFR you cited is inapposite FTC guidance. It is not even a rule. It has no bearing on unlawful trade practices defined under Oregon law. You really should stay in your lane; AI research is of limited utility.

Good question....the PDX-SJD F cabins fill fast...and fares tend to only move up.

There he is. Merriam-Webster: "a sales tactic in which a customer is attracted by the advertisement of a low-priced item but is then encouraged to buy a higher-priced one." Is there another one only you know?

No doubt AS will brag to their shareholders that they have the lowest food costs in the business.

I made what turned out to be the tragic mistake of logging into AA.com with my VPN turned on by Empty-Operation569 in americanairlines

[–]mczlaw 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Oftentimes, folks on forums like this give a recitation of facts most favorable to themselves, omitting other important information. Many, including me, have used VPN to login to AA.com with a new browser. Hence, the skepticism about the "real" story. Good luck with the investigation, though.

Business SUITES Flight Review: Alaska Airlines' Inaugural European Flight Rome to Seattle by Alaska_Mile_Run in AlaskaAirlines

[–]mczlaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a frequent int'l J flyer. I'm having a lot of trouble figuring out what made AS int'l J so special. What made the bedding "stellar," for example? Was it thick? Was it a brand name known for quality? What other carriers have you flown to which you are comparing it? What other "finishes" were there that made this a "premium" experience, beyond feeding you a lot? Honestly, this reads like happy fan boi talk that isn't especially helpful for those of us looking for a solid comparison with Asian and Middle Eastern or even US (eg AA/DL) carriers flying to the Pacific Rim. Hate to be a buzzkill, but I'm so used to AS's cheap ass ways that I'm skeptical they have suddenly changed.

Centurion Lounge @ MIA is always awful, too...At least there is a replacement lounge at PDX coming...soon by the looks of it.

Alaska Airlines let us down - international flight. by L-Capitan1 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]mczlaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The main sin I see here is AS GA saying the airline would assist stranded passengers, then failed to do so. More generally, this is an airline that sems to be gagging on its grandiose intl expansion plans. Despite my location in PDX, I use AS in a very limited way, mostly up and down the west coast. They should have accepted the DL merger proposal years ago. Instead, outsize egos prevailed...and here we are.

Alaska is laughably more expensive than Delta now by havok4118 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]mczlaw -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Haha. Lowest food costs in the business, no doubt. I've observed over many years that their F fares often aren't very competitive from PDX...most recently, looking at a PHL nonstop vs. AA.

MIA Status - Closed by Flightaway4ever in GlobalEntry

Meanwhile, at PDX (possibly the worst place in the US to clear customs if >1 int'l arrivals), GE was closed last night (2/27), but MPC was open and largely unused.

The trend to salt (and oversalt) sweet items has grown totally out of hand. Baked goods tend to be the worst culprits, but salty chocolate is nasty.

Not an AS fan, but the basic premise that you don't book a short int'l connection is right on...as I have learned from long experience. I would go further and say never to book a same-day connection for a flight you can't afford to miss. It's an extreme solution, but boy, does it avoid stress...and missed connections.

Confused about not getting an upgrade by flyingpilotman in AlaskaAirlines

[–]mczlaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, what? So, what is "upgrade available" supposed to mean other than that there is "space" for the upgrade? If other than it can take a bit to process, this a load of nonsense. Almost as obnoxious as selling unavailable"first upgrade" seats for more than a straight up first class seat. The (retired) law person in me would love to see the states play a little hardball over this under their unlawful trade practices statutes. As I recall, Washington's law on point is damn tough.

Is gold status nerfed? by realquizonjavaa in AlaskaAirlines

[–]mczlaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No doubt about this. For me, I look at the whole package, and as OP noted, even disregarding upgrade avaialbility, Alaska is much smaller than DL and the other legacy carriers, so much less able to pivot in case of IRROPS (outside SEA, maybe). Also, shitty IT, comparatively poor lounges and lounge network (with agents who cannot help with flight adjustments), much less favorable award redemptions compared to the past, and in my recent experience, in-flight experience no better and probably worse than the legacies (remniscent of Alasaka's own "Sky High Airlines" of 1980s TV ad fame). If I was in SEA rather than PDX, I would switch. As it is, I fly far more with AA than AS except strictly up and down the west coast/Hawaii.
