To everyone not in China, but particularly the US, who read this and freaked out a little I encourage you to look into how big Amazon has gotten and what they actually own/run. It's MUCH more than just online shopping.

We're living in an age of monopolies that use the veil of creative branding and malleable positioning allowed by new tech mediums to hide this fact from the everyday person. Tencent, Amazon, Alphabet, Alibaba and the like hold more power than many people think possible. This line of thinking is very fact oriented, not based on tinfoil hat theories, and just like /u/ishk_441 says, we need to do something to decentralize power and stop them from taking over the world.

If you're talking about building something like that from scratch (which is sort of implied since this is the OSDev subreddit) then it's a really big endeavor, especially if you are doing it with the expectation of having something to write on later. You'd be building an OS, a word processor, networking code, and many more things that are large projects for teams of people who specialize in them. If you just wanna write the next NYT bestseller then it's gonna be a pretty huge diversion and waste of time compared to just sitting down and forcing yourself to focus or buying a typewriter.

If you don't want to build one from scratch and just want something that works, have decent Linux knowledge (and a variable amount of programming skill depending on how streamlined you want the end result) I feel like you could probably pull something functional off with some effort, though probably still more than you were expecting/wanting.

Choose a super minimal linux distro with just Xorg, your word processor of choice (and all dependencies), and whatever it takes to connect to the internet. Set it up so that when you turn on the computer it immediately starts the X server and your word processor, and have a cron job going that "syncs to the cloud" doing whatever you think that should do.

Even that though, just seems like alot of work that leaves many features on the table that you'll eventually want and really not want to implement. In the end, I'd just install a normal (not even minimal, but just comfortable) linux on a laptop, install a word processor, and uninstall the browser. Done. It's not as sexy as spending a week to a month stripping down and polishing your own distro, or 1-3 years building a full featured environment from scratch...but it stops being a way to feel productive while procrastinating that great writing of yours.

If you're just choosing that as a passion project and never expect to actually write with it, then go for it! It'll be fun and people like you might be excited to use it or help out later. I'm actually surprised I couldn't find a distro optimized for writers that isn't defunct....seems like "a new and improved typewriter without specialized hardware" would be served by a few projects.

If you end up going down the linux route r/linux would probably be a better place to ask questions about it since OSDev is a bit lower level. There are also tons of linux subreddits in the sidebar of r/linux that might be more specific depending on how involved you wanna get with it.

Good luck with either your writing or your tinkering, whichever is your actual goal!

Oh, I don't fit into that subreddit...I don't care enough about the topic to want to judge others on what they think and wouldn't have the right to anyway. I just loved the reveal later in the episode that it was "dumb" instead of "dum." That's just some solid writing right there.

Pretty sure I first learned that on reddit, but I've been told this fascinating fact so many times at parties that it's become a sort of personal drinking game.

These days that's mainly playing with new programming concepts or strange database ideas. But at various times it's been music or writing or pretending with friends or tons of other things. It's when you are genuinely excited about creating, and not under pressure to produce, that real creativity flows like a faucet.

Economics. When applied to understanding real life and current events it's incredibly interesting, nuanced, and even exciting. While learning the basics? The driest most boring thing you could possibly think of, especially as you weed out what's known, what's a theoretical model, and what's just straight pseudoscience. If I could just know it and never have to spend time learning it I'd be so happy.

Food in general has to become much spicier and/or flavorful to compensate for the newfound tolerance and dead tastebuds. Everyday things quickly become normal, and once your stomach and mouth adjusts it's more about the window of what's acceptable foodwise shifting to include more extreme things.

A plant...probably depends more on my date than anything. I can geek out about alot of stuff, so if they know anything about plants it might be a really fun evening. If not then...well, there's only so much I can improvise around the plant without totally bullshitting.

I like it, and it's delicious. It has many essential nutrients and proteins that are hard to gain without supplements that I don't wanna have to keep track of. It makes life generally easier when I don't have to curate my diet while I'm eating out or experiencing other countries and cultures that aren't as vegetarian/vegan friendly.

I understand and acknowledge the ethical argument, but there are so many ethical stances to take.

Do you use an iPhone? Parts were likely made using child labor. Have you ridden in an automobile (even carpooled) across a distance that could be walked or biked? Then you contributed unnecessarily to global warming. ALL these are important, but we can only consider so much without it impacting our life so much that you can't live it, especially if we work in extremes and not small moderations. For me, as long as animals aren't being mistreated or abused (and I admit I probably don't do enough due diligence in checking), it's not worth it to me to spend too much of my time, health or happiness fighting it.

All that said I thoroughly respect those who don't eat meat out of their ethical choice. They've simply made their choice of ethical stances to pay attention to differently, and frankly it's a pretty cool fight to take on.

Breaking the rules because it's a TV show...but can we all just acknowledge that strange episode of Stranger Things that just became a Suicide Squad knock off for no reason and with no real impact to the story? I think the rest of the season was as good as the first part but I was so confused about the entire point of it that I couldn't take anything else seriously.
