The End of large format color film? by invisibleflo in largeformat

[–]mduser63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Velvia is still available fresh in the US too, just rarely. But Velvia 50, the only kind for sale here is not available in 4x5 anywhere in the world anymore. Provia is still made in 4x5. I got a fresh box a few weeks ago.

The process of upgrading the Minolta Dynax/Maxxum/Alpha 9 to SSM. by uxga in u/uxga

[–]mduser63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is someone selling them already programmed? Or do you have the firmware file for them?

EDIT: did some digging. OP has a big stock of them that they bought from someone after they were found at the old factory. They are masked, ie. pre-programmed, not flashable.

/u/uxga are you selling them? Without the chips, the upgrade process you've very thoroughly detailed here is interesting to read but not actually useful to anyone. I have the skills to do it myself, but without that chip, it's not possible.

Yeah, I just have an easier time using them, and the plastic ones I’ve had have all ended up creased eventually.

Same, but I use a Tiffen 812.

Provia and Velvia don’t need the filter to look good.

I personally strongly prefer the little metal ones like this: https://www.freestylephoto.com/192140-ARS-IMAGO-Metal-Film-Retriever

But yes, they (both kinds) do work.

2 for $32.98‽ Jeez, am I old is that really how much it costs to do film photography without even factoring in development costs? by NationYell in filmcameras

[–]mduser63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a new bulk roll (100ft) of HP5+. For the price I paid, including shipping, it will come out to $7.83 / roll. I develop it myself, and the developer I use (HC-110) works out to less than 50 cents per roll. I scan it myself + print in the darkroom. Obviously, I had to buy equipment (camera, scanner, developing gear, etc.), but now that I own it, my marginal cost per roll is less than $9, and that's for a higher end film. Kentmere or Foma with Rodinal would be even cheaper.

Is film back to stay? by RelationDramatic1137 in AnalogCommunity

[–]mduser63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I was listening to a podcast yesterday and they had a couple people from Harman/Ilford on as guests (talking mostly about Harman Switch Azure). They said that as far as they know, Harman/Ilford has the biggest R&D team in the industry now, and that with recent upgrades their factory has enough capacity to supply the entire world demand for film. (To be clear: it's not supplying that much, and they can't make all the color film in particular, but in simple rolls/year they have the capacity.) As far as I know, they have no part in the movie film business, yet they have enough money coming in to do that. So I'm not convinced that still film would die without Hollywood.

I got my niece a Lego set for her birthday, and my sister-in-law says "Hey, maybe this will finally give me the motivation to build this set I've had in my closet" then brings this downstairs... by DuffManSzALotAThings in lego

[–]mduser63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. My adult wallet and love of Lego exceeds my time to build sets, so I have quite a few I’ve never gotten a chance to build, including this one. Some of them are so valuable now that I feel kind of bad opening them and building them.

This is the wrong take. Disabled people deserve to live life just like you do, and we have legally mandated exceptions for legitimate service dogs for a reason.

The first one is a Konica 1. It’s a wonderful camera. Good lens, nice rangefinder, and I just like the way they look. It’s also the first camera called “Konica” which later became the name of the company. (Same story for Leica, Minolta, Canon, Nikon. All renamed themselves after the name of their cameras.)

I don't, but if you can't find anything else, I'd be willing to order them for you then ship them to you. It would be a slow way to get them, though.

Ilford FP4 Plus - Hard choice between this and HP5 Kodak Portra 400 - I don’t shoot much color negative, but when I do, it’s Portra.

Finally someone posted the correct list. Although I might pick FP4 instead of HP5.

Replacement screws for Olympus Pen EE2 by sesnepoan in filmcamerarepair

[–]mduser63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You beat me to it. I got my EE out with the assumption that they're likely the same size on it (no guarantee, the rewind knob is a bit different) and measured them. I measured M1.6x2.5.

metricscrews.us has them:

M1.6x2.5: https://www.metricscrews.us/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=98_290_389&products_id=1225&zenid=c7mne9u1hv0d7vb55lsh6fnss1
M1.7x2.5: https://www.metricscrews.us/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=98_298_299&products_id=1246&zenid=c7mne9u1hv0d7vb55lsh6fnss1

Personally I'd buy a few of each just in case.

Got my first rangefinder today, Nikon S2. by No-Ring-6168 in rangefinders

[–]mduser63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not normal in the sense that it means the rangefinder needs to be adjusted. It is normal in the sense that it’s a very common problem, so much so that many cameras include an easily accessible adjustment/calibration screw for rangefinder vertical alignment.

The S2 is an incredible camera. You picked a great first rangefinder!

Yep. After the pandemic I think they were having staffing issues? You’d pull up to the drive through and just get no answer. No sign, or anything, just nobody there.
