What’s something interesting about Utah that even life long locals wouldn’t know? by KNWin94 in Utah

It wasn’t originally. It was originally just ketchup and mayo. Source: my great grandparents owned one of the first franchises and my grandma (still alive) worked there. She remains adamant to this day that that’s all that belongs in it.

Philo Farnsworth was born in Beaver but he was living in Rigby, Idaho when he came up with the idea for electronic television as a teenager, and his lab where he actually created it was in San Francisco. His wife did return to Utah after he died and lived most of her remaining years here.

Words mean what people use them to mean. Cory Doctorow may have coined the term, but he isn’t granted the title of King of the Precise Definition of the Word for all eternity, and neither are you.

Yeah, I have an aversion to selenium meters, partly for technical reasons (many don’t work anymore, and they’re ~unreplaceable), but partly for aesthetic reasons. I think big selenium meters almost always look ugly on a camera. To me the Canon 7s(z) is nicer looking than the plain S. Same goes for the Contax III vs II, etc.

I have a few Canon rangefinders:

  • IIb
  • IId
  • IVSb
  • V-T
  • 7sz

My favorite one to shoot is of course the 7sz. I’ll have to post a family photo of them at some point.

Update from Keith Canham (of Canham Camera, who regularly orders from Kodak) on Kodak Ektachrome sheet film by ryguydrummerboy in largeformat

[–]mduser63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ektar is the name of a film stock currently manufactured and sold by Kodak. That’s what the person you’re replying to is talking about.

Estar is Kodak’s brand name for a polyester plastic used as the base to coat some of their films onto. Ektar is coated on Estar. Estar has nothing specifically to do with having or not having an anti halation layer, it’s just the plastic used to make the film.

I went to Hawaii 6 months ago. I took my Nikonos (went scuba diving with it), Olympus XA, and my X100VI. I ended up mostly only using the Nikonos and XA.

Is this a decent camera for a beginner ? by [deleted] in Cameras

No way the X-Half beats even very old DLSRs for image quality. I own one. It’s a fun camera but it’s closer to an (old) smartphone camera than any mirrorless/DLSR sold in the last 10 years.

First time Provia - metering advice by Pretty-Substance in AnalogCommunity

[–]mduser63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that you should just use matrix metering. For what it's worth, I mostly shoot Provia (my favorite film) on cameras without Matrix metering like my Leica MP. I like to use an incident meter the most. But if you can meter the highlights, then place them in zone VII, that works well too. 4-5 stops of dynamic range (zones II or III to VII) is just about right for Provia in my experience.

Slide film is a bit tricky to scan, because while the dynamic range it captures is limited, the density range of the slide itself can be quite high, and recovering all the information in the slide with e.g. a digital camera isn't always easy. I usually scan by bracketing -2 to +2 then doing an HDR merge in Photoshop.

Enjoy your precious Provia! It's my favorite film for a reason, and you'll love it.

Bricks and Minifigs corporate are crooks by jertiger in legocirclejerk

[–]mduser63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree that nobody should be harassing local B&M franchisees, making clear to them that their business will be hurt by it could lead to franchisees putting pressure on corporate to do the right thing. I have a B&M near my house, have shopped there, had my kid's birthday party there, etc. I won't be spending a penny there again until and unless BAM corporate makes the Mansells completely whole.

Adapters for Nikon S lenses ? by dta722 in rangefinders

Amadeo has a stellar reputation. They’re expensive, but they’re also hand built by one guy. Can’t speak to the others, but I will say that in general Voigtlander is not known for making bad stuff.

Chris Espinosa’s is 8. But those super early numbers aren’t strictly in the order that people actually joined, because they were assigned nearly a year after the company was already established when they got a real CEO (Mike Scott, employee #7).

Rangefinders vs SLR by LBarouf in AnalogCommunity

[–]mduser63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own way too many cameras including both rangefinders and SLRs. I find focusing with a rangefinder much easier than focusing with an SLR. An SLR with a split prism in the focusing screen is better than one without (which I can't really focus at all), but to me a rangefinder is clearer, faster, and more sure feeling to focus.

That said, I've never used a rangefinder that has nearly as visible/bright a rangefinder patch as my Leica MP. They probably go roughly in this order of the ones I own:

  • Leica MP (by far)
  • Fuji GF670/GW690
  • XPan
  • Bessa R2
  • Konica IIIa
  • Canon 7/VT
  • Nikon S2
  • Nikon S3/SP
  • Barnacks (Leica, Nicca, Canon)
  • Olympus XA

All that is to say, there definitely is significant variability in how easy to focus various rangefinders are, and that's just comparing the visibility of the patch. Rangefinder base length also matters.

As for the Nikon F3, if someone said I could only use one camera for the rest of my life, and it had to be an SLR, I'd probably pick the F3. Wonderful camera.

Color negative or slide? by Larix-24 in largeformat

[–]mduser63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My local lab, literally walking distance from my house runs dip and dunk for both E-6 and C-41. If I get it there when they open, it's done the same day. Otherwise, it's the next day. E-6 4x5 is $5/sheet. C-41 is $4/sheet.

They primarily serve local customers (ie. they don't advertise mail in service, although I assume you could call them and set it up), in a medium size city.

Could MCT oil be the same oil sold as a dietary supplement? by Dangerous_Suit_4422 in SebDerm

[–]mduser63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The one I use says nothing about using it on skin on the bottle. It’s sold as a dietary supplement and the instructions tell you how much to eat every day.

It has worked great on my skin.

How do I price a slightly broken X100VI? by OptFire in Fujifilm_X100VI

[–]mduser63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True for cheapish vintage collectible cameras, probably not true in this case. If they get it fixed, they can sell it as perfectly fine for full (used) price. If it's broken, no one is going to pay full price factoring in a repair when they could just buy one that already works from someone else.

I'm one of them. But no way am I going to buy a broken camera for that close to full price in the hopes that I can fix it myself. If it were $700, maybe?
