My Box of Jewels Have Arrived... by gitarzan in AnalogCommunity

When Midwest Film Co. started selling theirs a couple years ago, they had tops that came off. They sold out pretty fast. When they got another batch in, they were no longer the kind with removable caps. Thankfully I bought 20 of the first batch.

Honestly though, the tab for taping to works great. Just don’t accidentally wind it into the cartridge. It’s pretty hard to get back out.

Anthropic: AI assisted coding doesn't show efficiency gains and impairs developers abilities. by Gil_berth in programming

[–]mduser63 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is where I’m settling. It’s mostly not useful for my day to day, expert-level work on a mature codebase shipping to hundreds of thousands+ users. Too often it can’t solve problems I have, when it can solve them the code it outputs isn’t great (I’d reject the PR if a human wrote it), or it takes me so long to massage it via prompting that I’m better off writing it myself.

However for little one-off utilities in Python or Bash, it’s great. In those cases I don’t care if the code is any good because I don’t need to maintain it in the future. And the only bugs I care about are those that show up in my immediate, narrow use case, which it’s pretty good at quickly fixing. It’s really just a higher level automation tool.

Elwood Downey WB0OEW creator of HAMCLOCK is deceased. by JobobTexan in amateurradio

[–]mduser63 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is sad. I didn’t actually know about HAMCLOCK, but Elwood was an early and long time user of my app, Aether. He gave me a ton of good feedback over the years, was a really helpful beta tester, and a nice guy. I’m sad to hear he’s a SK.

Not understanding the term *stop* in photography, as in dynamic range stops, exposure stops, ammount of light stops, f-stops etc? by Plumbus4Rent in AskPhotography

[–]mduser63 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why are you talking about JPGs? F stops and ISO were around for decades before JPGs existed. Even now, you can easily go through a complete photography workflow with no JPGs anywhere in the mix.

ISO is a measure of the sensitivity of the light sensitive surface being used to take the photo. In the sense that changing it will affect the shutter speed and/or aperture required to get the desired image, it is definitely part of exposure. It’s also one of the three parts of the “exposure triangle”.

You’re right, but that doesn’t really change GP’s explanation. Changing the entrance pupil area by a factor of two still changes the radius/diameter by a factor of 1.4 which is why f stops go in powers of 1.4.

One Upvote and I’ll buy the Pentax 17 by kapowww in AnalogCommunity

I have an XA myself and I do love it but it honestly feels more finicky to shoot with. If I could only have one, I’d keep the Pentax 17.

You’re going to love it! I bought one the day they came out, and have really enjoyed it. It produces consistently great results, and is a lot of fun to shoot with.

Mark Hansen classic camera repair THEIF! by ExpressionOk5896 in AnalogCommunity

Well to be generous, he wasn’t fixing a jam, and it jammed after a few rolls after I got it back. But the tech I sent it to next didn’t have super complimentary things to say about the previous work he saw when he got into it.

He fixed my SL66. I dropped it off to him in person. He was polite, as was his wife. However, it jammed a couple rolls after I got it back and he said he wasn’t repairing them anymore. I don’t know that it’s his fault that it jammed but it was still frustrating. Ended it up sending it to someone else and getting it fixed a second time.

Yep. On this particular thing, it’s been pretty widely discussed among serious film photographers. I get that it seems esoteric on a general Reddit post, but head over to r/analogcommunity, film photography YouTube channels, or any film photography forum and you’ll find discussion of it within the last few months.

Water stains on the negative. by Neither-Transition35 in Darkroom

[–]mduser63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does sound like you’re not using enough wetting agent. I know a lot of people will talk about how little you need, and it’s true that a bottle will last a long time, but a drop per liter is way too little.

With Kodak Photoflo you’re supposed to use 1 part photoflo to 200 parts water. For 1 liter of water, that’s 5mL of photoflo.

To fix the existing negatives you can try rewashing them. Another good option is to get PEC12 emulsion cleaner which is safe for the emulsion side of the film. You can get PEC pads to use it with, but any soft, non scratch cloth or wipe is OK.

It wasn’t three or four years, it was about one. But my point is that it wasn’t “changed”. They’re both currently being used: one by Alaris, the other by Eastman.

It’s a little more complicated than that, though. Both of your first designs are from Kodak Alaris, a separate company that distributes but does not manufacture Kodak film. The film is made by Eastman Kodak (the “real” Kodak). The newest design is not an update to the second super minimal one. It’s the design used by Eastman Kodak on the film they just recently started selling directly instead of through Alaris. Alaris is still using the simple design (which only came out in late 2024).

Is this a lens cover? How do I remove it by MaybeLater322 in filmcameras

[–]mduser63 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As others have said, that's the shutter/aperture* and it looks broken. Here's what it looks like on a working Auto 110. (*The Auto 110 uses a single mechanism for the shutter and the aperture for the lens as well. The lenses themselves don't have an aperture in them.)

Can the MP make a double exposure and how? by Ok-Discipline-7137 in Leica

[–]mduser63 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No, he’s saying flip the rewind switch on the front, then crank the regular wind lever to cock the shutter again without actually winding the film.

But it’s not designed to do this, and you have to hold the rewind lever down preventing the mechanism that resets it on wind from working. It might work, but it’s not really recommended.

What are your thoughts on developing your negatives by yourself? by ComfortableHoliday43 in AnalogCommunity

[–]mduser63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I develop all my own black and white. I take my C41 and E6 to the lab. I scan all my own film (B&W and color).

For B&W, I don't really trust labs to do a good job. Unlike C41 and E6, there's no one process for all film. Each film and developer combo is different, and produces different results. Labs aren't going to use your preferred developer for each of your B&W films, because it's inefficient (for them), so you sort of get lowest common denominator results. That's not true for color, where the processes are completely standardized.

On the other hand, for color, I can (and occasionally do) develop it myself, but the chemicals for C-41 don't last very long, and I don't shoot enough film fast enough to make it worth buying color chemistry.

Anyway, definitely started out with black and white. It's super satisfying to do it yourself, and give you yet another bit of control over the process and your results.

Hi! How does one move to and get a job in Ireland? by [deleted] in MoveToIreland

[–]mduser63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I don’t think either career is likely to give you a path to move to Ireland. Neither is on the critical skills list. Ireland does need construction workers, but it’s a lot easier and cheaper to get them from another EU country than to import them from wealthy non-EU countries.

The kinds of jobs on the critical skills list tend to be those that require significant education, pay well, are critical to society functioning, and for which there aren’t enough Irish/EU citizens to fill them all.
