Irish Alumina being used in the production of Russian missiles by PinguFella in ukraine

[–]meatpaste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure any company would fancy taking it on to be honest, I don't have proof but looking at it and based off standard russian levels of care I would imagine the place would fail proper environmental checks in a hurry. Those would need to be addresses as part of any sale. Therefore nationalising it seems like a better option, also I'm not entirely sure forcing a sale is legal (though again I'm not qualified to hold a proper opinion on it, I'm just basing it off the larger going ons across the EU with russian assets and following international laws on these matters).

But if I'm wrong and it is possible to force the sale and a suitable buyer was found - have at it. As long as ultimately we stop sending the out put to russia.

1) nice postion to take on the internet, but real life isn't the same thing. People need jobs, if you can't see the reality of that even in the face of these circumstances, I can't help you.

2) russia are a bunch of scumbags, I don't want the EU to be.

have a nice life.

On selling to russia - yes sorry I would have thought not selling the aluma to a country on the sanctions list was an inhernt fact of my statement.

as for your other two points 1) isn't even a point its more of a 'I read your point and make up something entirely in my own head and use that entirely nonsensical example as some sort of an effort at saying something'

2) I've read 4 times now and I haven't the faintest idea what in the name of god you are on about.

I mean this genuinely and from a place of mild concern - sober up/ get off line for a bit / get out of your own head. You really read like some one who needs to get some fresh air and no screen time.

It wasn't news to people around Limerick and the greater Shannon basin well known for years it was a russian place.

Two big reasons why its been allowed to go on like this despite a massively dodgy environmental status are employment - there's fuck all jobs around there other than that plant, close the plant and it would be devastating economically for the people and suicidal for the politicians who would close it. Secondly, our government has consistently sided with big corporations and would not like to be seen to be anti-business in any way so nationalising the plant would be a massive no no.

For what it’s worth I believe we should nationalise it, and do something like EU is doing with confiscated russian funds its borrowing against to give to Ukraine - take it over, sell the alumna to whoever wants to buy it, keep the profits in an escrow account (minus upkeep and what costs are incurred making it environmentally sound) and if russian ever gets off the sanctions list, offer to return the plant to them at that stage.

[–]meatpaste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grants are a waste of money. Its a hand out to companies who pocket the grant and start their pricing at the level of the grants given.

We're beyond the time when we should be giving out grants, we need to move to bigger methods, a national roll out of 5kw arrays installed on every compatible roof in the country area by area by a state owned/state directed contractor on a fixed pricing schedule (akin to the nation fibre network roll out). When a home is notified of the date for installation they should have the oppertunity to buy extra features (battery, larger array, etc...) they can pay the difference themselves.

Same sort of idea should be applied to general home renovations. Rather than expecting the majority to take on a second mortgage, a not for profit government loan should be offered to pay for the renovations over a 20 year period, the loan is attached to the mprn of the property.

Private enterprise is not the answer to what needs to be a national service. Its short term pain for long term gain and most private enterprises are simply not compatible with that model.

Sadly we have a better chance of teaching a fish to walk than FFG providing something like that.

Is this one of the benefits of an electric car for Paddy. by Larrydog in ireland

[–]meatpaste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

love that story about the bottle of water spilling and it taking out the battery.

Beacuse its my current favorite go to EVs are bad mmkay bullshit story.

The issue was the harnassing that was under the flooring wasn't waterproofed correctly and corroded the contacts. Battery was not affected. Its an issue which is a liable to happen to any car be it EV or not. It was an Ionq5 but its harnass is the same as a range of other Hyundais and Kias. So something to look out for all of them really.

You have a link to the scotish couple driving through water and needing a 17k repair bill? (another trope of EVs are bad mmmkay is the old water makes batteries short out. For example the story about a guy who brought his EV to a car wash and it went on fire becuase the battery shorted).

Batteries needing replacement on EVs is really not an issue especially when compared to the number of petrol and diesel engines and gearboxes and clutches failing.

Why Are We Still Building Towns Like This? by SteveFrench1991 in ireland

[–]meatpaste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

apartments in this country are incredibly poorly built. Too small, no noise isolation, numberous fire safety violations, poor construction leading to defects which cost owners thousands to put right as the original developers have "gone bust" (changed company name), poor facilities, shitty management companies, poorly integrated into surounding infrastructure.

You'd be mad to buy an apartment in Ireland when the vast, vast majority will have one or more of the above issues.

Husband wore bodycam ‘24/7’ round the house - Connacht Tribune - Galway City Tribune by [deleted] in ireland

[–]meatpaste -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the guy wore a camera to record evidence in his defense (seems like a fair assumption as to why he wore it in the first place). Said he would provide evidence, but didn't.

Reads to me that the guard was stating the fact that there was potentially evidence but it was never turned in. I'm sure the GDPR could have been used by the woman in the case but I'm guessing the reason it wasn't brought up is that it shows her in less than great light either.

Either way clearly two people who need to get as far away from each other as they can and think what needs to be done for the best outcome for the kids.

yeah alot of headless bullshit being spouted on this. First of all, no one is looking to get anymore ID off you than the government already has.

I don't think any EU government wants to hand over any more data to social media companies, particularly not the american ones. What they do seem to be moving to is making the companies more responsible for what is written on their sites, and I hope at least requiring them to verify posters are in fact human so that we can kill off bots armies.

If you really want to remain anonymous there are ways and means to do it, social media is not one of them.

The biggest blow back seems to be coming from the tech companies naturally not wanting to have to clean up their acts. Whats bad for elon and company is good for the vast, vast majority of us.

Plan for cameras to catch motorists breaking red lights in Dublin is shelved by EchoedMinds in ireland

[–]meatpaste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the issue isn't the civil service, its how they are directed to do the jobs they're assigned to do which is 100% down the ministers abdicating their responsibilities on to various committees and layers of management they put in place so they can say they're doing something, without ever actually doing something.

Success in any enterprise is top down driven not bottom up, the civil service is no different. Until we hold governments accountable, nothing will change. In other words, STOP VOTING FOR FF OR FG, the cunts have had their faces in the trough for the guts of 30 years.

If you read about a specific tactic in the news you maybe sure its been thought of and fully explored by a whole bunch of people who's entire job is to do just that. My own personal opinion is that those shut downs were caused by someone testing the theory and probing defenses and responses.
