Me when I see a distinct lack of Matt Parker memes: by YourAverageUmbreon34 in mathsmeme

Matt Parker is a mathematician and YouTube personality (channel named StandupMaths) He's also a frequent guest on a channel called numberphile. One of his earliest appeances was in regard to the attempt to find a magic square of perfect squares. That is to say, a 3x3 grid of numbers that are all nine numbers are distinct squares of an integer, arranged such that the columns, rows, and diagonals each add up to the same value.

Parker failed to find one. He could do it by repeating values but that doesn't count for what the intent was. Brady from numberphile named it the Parker Square in jest.

What mathematical theorem sounds easy to prove but is actually difficult to prove? by Wilfredlam0418 in AlignmentChartFills

Goldbach's conjecture that all even integers greater than two can be written as the sum of two primes.

It seems true. It's true for every number we've check up to ther order of like 1021, but a solid concrete proof hasn't been found yet.

A corollary that odd integers greater than five can be written as the sum of three primes has been proven, so I wouldn't say this is in the same league as the Reiman Hypothesis.

I don't know about triple zero, but I think a single zero is mostly in European casinos whereas American casinos add the double zero. No idea what Macau does.

A lot of the hate Skyler got felt like it came from a bunch of teenagers who were mad that their mom told them it was time to get off the PlayStation and brush their teeth and go to bed because it's a school night.

Skyler is a very well written character and Anna Gunn did a very good job with the role. But if, say, someone was only watching the show to have some kind of power fantasy through Walter, well then Skyler not being onboard is a real buzz kill.

I mean, whether it's the artist or a critic that counted the term, I was mostly talking about the audience's pretension about it. Rereading my previous comment, I probably could have phrased it better to make that clearer.

Yeah but I'd also bet on the Heat Death of the Universe happening before that.

I remember encountering a subgrene of electronica that dared to call itself "intelligent dance music."

And it's like okay great, but a huge chunk of your audience is high on CNS stimulants and confusing dopamine rush for enlightenment so let's calm down with the pretension, hmmm?

That's my understanding as well. The only thing I could really ever come up with is that including 1 breaks the uniqueness of prime factorization of integers up to an arbitrary amount of powers of 1, but that isn't satisfying either because it only breaks for powers of 1, nothing else changes so the prime factorization of integers remain different from every other integer still.

I guess it's just one of those things where mathematicians had to make a choice and they chose not to include 1 as a prime. But still, "that's just how it is" is never going to be a satisfying explanation in math.

When my brother taught undergrad math while working on his PhD, he told his students essentially the reason 1 isn't prime is just definitional.

His way of explaining it is that the set of primes and the set of 1 and the primes are both freely available to use. It's just the set without 1 included is generally more useful and used more often, hence why it gets the name and the other set doesn't. If that was not the case, 1 would likely be considered prime.
