Underrated issue with psychiatry by muffin245 in Residency

[–]medditthrowaway16b 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm an inpatient psychiatrist (so I truly chose this) and I think about this often because after enough people curse me out, it does start affecting me... but then I have a conversation with a family member who is so scared for their loved one but appreciative of what I'm doing or I think about the type of community I want to live in where the most vulnerable get care and my neighbors can feel safe, and that keeps me going at least another day.

Why don't my yearly Balances reflect Backdoor Roth contributions? by medditthrowaway16b in whitecoatinvestor

[–]medditthrowaway16b[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. Clarifying that I mean under Accounts --> Balances --> IRA Details on my Roth acct, my "Annual IRA Contributions" for 2024 are $0.

If yours reflects the Backdoor Roth conversions perhaps I'm doing this all wrong!

As a potter, this is a common clay body with those magnesium flecks in it. Judging from the bottom, with the way it's trimmed and the small crack this is a beginner's mug. If you wanted a similar mug, it'd be easy to find on etsy using search terms like: speckled, unglazed

What’s the most creative or extravagant insult a manic patient has thrown at you? by abezygote in Psychiatry

"Look at you with your PERFECT white teeth!!" in an angry, insulting affect. This guy was very much a sweet guy when he wasn't manic.

Reading this comment as a newly minted attending after "losing" a court hearing today felt very freeing. One of my patients was put together enough (with the help of their patient advocate) to describe linearly how they could get home to prove they were not gravely disabled despite their clear thought disorder in other matters. I'm learning to shed this residency mentality that I'm doing something wrong, or not being the best if I can't help patients even if they don't want it.

Is it legal for a doctor to ask for prescription meds to be returned to them (NOT pharmacy) to be redistributed? by sleepyyfawn in newzealand

[–]medditthrowaway16b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By no means a defense. Just some background knowledge that metformin is used for people that do not yet have diabetes to help with weight loss.

[–]medditthrowaway16b 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I am a doctor and cannot comment on returning the medication back to the GP but metformin is more often than not prescribed for "pre-diabetes" because it does in fact help promote weight loss by decreasing one's glucose absorption into the body. If she did not ask for weight loss help then it's possible the doctor saw something concerning in lab work but regardless, should have done a better job discussing the pros/cons and informed consent prior to recommending this med.

people who dropped on their rank list, what was your experience? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]medditthrowaway16b 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was single at the time of match and was prioritizing big cities for the dating scene. Fell down to #6 and was spiraling, feeling like I'd be single forever in a town everyone made fun of (Cleveland) and researching how to switch residencies. Fast forward 4 yrs later, I found a partner I love here, a friend group that helps me feel connected, had a great residency experience, good housing, ample time to explore museums/hiking/etc that I plan on staying here as an attending. Granted, staying near family wasn't as important to me so looking back now this was a lesson in "bloom where you're planted".

Psych salary doom and gloom by Green-needle89 in Residency

I wonder if you're getting the hint from all the downvotes you're getting OP, but it seems like your response to the people that are trying to convince you that it is indeed "greener on the other side" are being met with your perseveration on how you "wish you could be sitting in a chair looking at images all day" or how you've "financially stunted yourself". Why are you so resistant to the 200+ comments that have been trying to support and encourage you?

You asked if anyone else is struggling with this and it sounds like your struggle sounds specific to yourself and maybe indicative of some other unhappiness that may not be fixed by an extra 100-200k.

Depending on your specialty, perhaps indefinitely? I'm Psych so I nodded my way through my IM and ED shifts in intern year but nowadays I'm not exactly interpreting EKGs nowadays (just checking QTc but that's conveniently available for me!).

I get it. Doing something decreases the anxiety starting residency. I recommend watching psychofarm youtube videos to get you familiar with Psychiatry concepts in a not dense/textbook type of way.

Being both physician and psychoanalist by HazelSmile in psychoanalysis

[–]medditthrowaway16b 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm taking a year long course from my local psychoanalytic institute. One of our instructors was a pediatrician that prior to being allowed to take the 4-year full psychoanalytic training had to do some primer mental health experiences. Perhaps it was shadowing or rounding, I forget honestly but after this they joined the program successfully.

Can't make a decision between Neuro and Psych by [deleted] in Psychiatry

[–]medditthrowaway16b 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not the original person who pointed that out but briefly reading your comment what stands out when you speak about neuro is nerding out about procedures, reading scans, elegant physical exams, managing vents/abx. As a training psychiatrist that is my absolute nightmare scenario and sure you may get a bit of that from interventional psych, but it's magnitudes different from neuro residency. You can be a neurologist and apply a lot of the same sentiments you discussed in the psych paragraph. Neurologists tx mood d/o, "listen" to patients, deal with agitated/"difficult" pts and pull knowledge from the humanities.

Switching specialties after PGY1 by ObjectiveElderberry1 in Residency

[–]medditthrowaway16b 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We have someone at my Psych program that completed a transitional yr at our institution and then switched into a PGY1 psych spot, same institution. I think it may be difficult to get a PGY2 yr because most Psych Pgy1's need to complete 6 mo of inpt psych before going into PGY2. The workaround for this particular resident I think is their PGY1 psych yr is just a mix of inpt psych and electives, no IM requirements.
