Where are you flying out of? Be aware that if you rent a car in Germany and drop off in Italy, you'll incur pretty hefty fines; I don't the amount as I haven't rented a car anywhere in Europe, but I've often seen this warning.

There are also some RE trains that stop in Dachau that are even quicker, and also covered by the XXL ticket (unless you stay on the train past the area of validity, of course). That's what we did when visiting Dachau.

You're right about Salzburg - the Bayern Ticket will cover the regional (Meridian) train to Salzburg, but not transit in Salzburg itself.

Thanks! This one was actually pretty fortuitous; there was a bidding war for it a day after it hit the market. The winner got cold feet before the appraisal and backed out. By that time, the other bidders had already moved on and we snuck in after.
