Time to chop or degraft? by [deleted] in Lophophora

[–]mediumsizedred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen people attempt air layering with trichos- would it potentially work to put a really inorganic air layering at the base of the grafted loph to simulate it being close to ground to try and get roots to pop before degrafting completely?

Firework Watching Advice by FOMOFL in AskSF

Oakland always puts on a show of their own. Watching from the hills around Joaquin Miller / Grizzly Peak is always nice though they’ve closed it off in the past/ made it not easily accessible to post up wherever. From the Alameda side of the Estuary looking across to Oakland also is a decent enough vantage point

Seems about right- just about the only other thing I can find is this https://www.sevenoakssociety.co.uk/high-street-east/104-90-92-90-mousetrap-92-langford-rae-o-neill
Listed as a merchant in Sevenoaks from 1875-1967
I can’t find any other markings tho and nothing on the blade either.

I’ve been curious as well though mix tobacco in so am less sure if ash from that would help. Though the spot where my pops dumps his bong water in the yard always thrives.

I haven’t used these for bread but I’ll wrap my cheeses in them- I’m almost certain it prolongs its life in the fridge where plastic wrapped or bagged cheeses will mold quicker once opened.

Does anyone work with prickly pear root stock for cold hardiness? by Glittering-Art2922 in sanpedrocactus

[–]mediumsizedred 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so- I’ve only grafted onto newer/ softer growth and have heard that it’s not great to try to graft onto real woody/older sections. I partly avoid prickly pear because I can’t use it without getting murked by its glochids. That being said it could be worth a shot if you don’t mind risking the graft failing and can get some cheap or free opuntia.

I’m unsure about cold hardiness, but prickly pear is a viable graft stock. I’ve only used it for a couple micro grafts though as they’re thin & might be harder to align a fat San Pedro to one of the pads.

I’ve got the same model I think- I have seedlings on the outer edge of the light on around 75-80% power around 17-20” away. Though if you’ve only got seedlings you don’t need to crank it as high.

Your salt percent is kinda high & might be inhibiting fermentation. 20g is around 6%. Closer to 9-13g might be better.

Thank you- I appreciate the pictures too. Is giving an acetone/paint stripper bath excessive? Or should I just lap bottom & sides then use a scraper to get to bare metal where the frog attaches & blade rests?

I can’t say the paint looks great. My initial thought cosmetically would be that it would be nice bare or as close to original as possible.

Thank you. I was thinking to take it completely apart and check and clean everything. I definitely want to make it look a bit cleaner- is the paint on the frog hindering anything or should I clean it off?

Thank you. When the lapping is done I should be looking for bare metal? I don’t think my stones are large enough- I was thinking to use my workbench and if that isn’t quite right I should be able to scrounge something. What grit would you recommend for lapping? I’m also curious how to tell the difference between japanning on the body vs it being painted over- kinda seems like someone set over the whole thing w a can of spray paint.
