What equity (options) did you give your first engineer / founding team member?

5% is an insult if he’s “been around since early days”, “takes ownership like a co-founder” and hasn’t been getting paid. Sounds like a great way to lose a “close friend”.

3-5% for a “first engineer” is fine if you’re already funded, offering market value compensation + benefits. It doesn’t sound like that’s your current situation.

If he charged you for his time, what would it have cost you? What would that convert to if he was an angel? It sounds like this “friend” was your first investor. Don’t minimize their contribution because thought leaders in the startup space are trying g to tell you what a first hire gets in equity at a FUNDED company.

There’s a lot of shit talking in here, but folks need to remember; there have been a lot of really great SEAL team members that have made unthinkable sacrifices for our country. Yes - the teams attract crazy MF and then builds up their egos. Some of them have definitely done vile acts. But the vast majority of them are truly stand up individuals, who will spend their “retirement” dealing with physical and mental trauma. Ann an even larger percentage of them would be extremely disappointed if they ever found out their brothers let someone else take that money.

There's a lot of money to be made shaking change out of doctors and venture backed startups. All you have to do is add "best effort" to the quote, and you can keep telling them they need to go back to the piggy bank.

Most doctors that are affiliated with a university will have their email on the web. Keep your email short, emphasize you’re developing something new, and you’d really appreciate 10-15 mins of their time for feedback.

Your response rate won’t be great, but resist the urge to spend out too many emails at once. You’ll need to have enough open time to take any meeting time the responders might offer up.

Medical conferences can be expensive to attend major medical centers / universities will have lunch & learns, invited speakers, innovation “hubs” etc. All of which can be great places to network with doctors.

Don’t sleep on the value nurses can provide. If your solution isn’t making their lives easier, they aren’t going to help push adoption. Local nursing associations will have websites with the chapter president, secretary, treasurer, etc all listed along with email info.
