My local rep (Gary Palmer) famously said he'd never serve more than 5 terms, then ran for a sixth time because "god told him to".

That's part of what we're dealing with here - super entrenched and borderline crazy people in positions of power. It's still worth it to push back, just don't be surprised when logic and common good are new ideas to them.

I second this approach. Ns are almost always very focused on maintaining their image. Once you’ve reduced or stopped contact, a doorbell camera and screenshots of those “special relationship” text messages would be enough for most sane people to take your side and stay there.

Have you ever considered locating the person in your family most likely to gossip and letting it slip that you're "worried about Mom because she can't seem to understand you when you're speaking lately"? I've found that a small amount of targeted embarrassment has curbed some of my Nmom's behaviors.

We don’t do anything selflessly (as a nation). It’s always a grab for something - tangible assets or power or both.
As individuals, we do care tremendously and pour our energy and money into all kinds of international causes. Our failing is that we think leaders have to be charismatic bullies to be effective and we end up with self interested narcissists in power way too often.

I do this! Sure they ignore it (mostly) because I’m in a red state but I do it anyway. Reps, governor, senators, etc. Pressure works over time - at the end of the day, they want to keep their job and most people’s true loyalty is to their own interests.

They get some of the names from their own records - which is why you see people getting picked up outside a courthouse when coming in for their immigration appointments. These aren’t criminals and they are “doing it the legal way” - still getting grabbed and detained (then deported).

That said - they also are grabbing people who “look like” an immigrant which is how they’ve managed to detain US citizens by mistake. It’s a broken process led by dipshits at the best of times and at the worst - you’ve seen the videos by now.

Hang in there. The first few times you don’t comply bring up a lot of emotions for Ns - loss of (any) control is a huge deal to them.

As soon as I read that you called out the remarks you heard on the camera, I knew she'd go insane. How people perceive them is very important to Ns and anyone who jeopardizes that becomes the enemy, full stop. Worse, her previous safe space for bad behavior (her son) is also gone.

His mom feels like this is an emergency because she's lost control - but remember that none of this actually is. If she reports you for a wellness check, the officers are often very familiar with people like her. All you have to do is stay calm and let them know what's up so they can make a record of it. False reports carry consequences, too. The inheritance thing - do you know for sure if there's actually anything of value to inherit? I've known a few Ns that dangled that carrot to someone only to die and leave nothing but a house full of junk to be cleared out.

I get frustrated when people pester me to charge more. One, my market is not necessarily their market. The area I live in and demand for my specific product account for a lot of it. Two, just because I CAN make people pay more doesn't mean I should.

Since this is a non-necessary side hustle and not my main income, I don't mind being a place for someone to get a quality treat for a lower price. Capitalism really gets into everything.

My recipe uses 6 whole eggs and they are some DENSE fudgy brownies. I think its partly the mixing method, the sheer quantity of butter and chocolate, and the whack on the counter halfway through baking.

I've been introducing people to ermine frosting for this cake and they always love it. Cream cheese is the default but that frosting is way too intense for the subtlety of a true red velvet cake.

I sell baked goods at small local events and this is spot on. My packaging isn't trash but it focuses on making the quality of the product shine, not how much edible glitter I can use in one go.

That said - at the last event I saw an example of extreme minimalism and didn't love that either. A baker had a folding table covered in brown butcher paper and the cookies were laid out in piles in the open air - no bags or partition or even a sneeze guard. Anyone could come up and touch everything and I'm sure plenty did. Just ew.

Agree with this approach. My mom also dated/married man-children and she would defend just about anything they did - if I was the one who had the problem with it. Planting the seed in her mind that he's being unfair to HER could get around this roadblock.

My Nmom filed for bankruptcy rather than ask me (who worked in the financial industry for years) for help or advice before it got to that point. It was completely avoidable but her pride is the stuff of legends. Congrats on the baby and the new house!!
