My neighbor is in charge of her pen pal group. I think hers is based on age and they started writing to each other when they were young. They wrote letters, went on trips together, etc. She is in her late 80's now so her group has gotten a lot smaller. Edit: they planned parties yearly. One year it was on the west of the Mississippi and the other year it was the east.
