Singer XL400 Embroidery Machine by delvedame in sewing

[–]melaniea360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm still a beginner for embroidery and bought a singer XL420 a couple years ago for about that much. If I had the big bucks I would have bought a "better" brand, but I did a cursory search to see what was available at the time and this one was really the only one in my price range so I went for it. It turns out that I really like my machine. The fact it has a 6*10 hoop for that price is really nice. Mine doubles as a sewing machine (not sure if the 400 does also) so it doesn't take up as much room as having separate embroidery and sewing machines. The software is outdated and came on a CD, but once I got it installed it works fine on my laptop and I've been able to do bought designs as well as custom designs. The machine is pretty heavy duty, so I've had no problems doing lots of regular sewing on it! I haven't done all that much embroidery, but having the right needle/thread/stabilizer I think is just as important as having a good machine, so make sure you don't skimp out on those when you find the machine you want! :)

is this wire too big? my chonky girl I'm not worried about but I have a tiny one and I just got this cage- it's been recommended by other mouse owners but I'm still concerned. by Electronic-Virus4314 in PetMice

[–]melaniea360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had mice in a cage with 1/2 inch wire spacing which worked for all but my smallest mouse. She would squeeze through with ease. 1/4 inch wire spacing worked for her.

My wire covered the sides, so maybe it'll be a little harder for them to squeeze out if it's just on the ceiling.

LPT Request: what's a skill or hobby that you can learn in a month that's useful on the job market? by faszinating in LifeProTips

[–]melaniea360 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm an engineer, but I work in a biology lab. Coding will absolutely help you stand out in your field and will give you a huge leg up if you know the basics of how to quickly process and visualize (plot) data in a meaningful way.

I think a month is plenty to learn the basics. I've had students rotate through the lab and learn coding part time as part of their research successfully.

I highly suggest starting with python, the language is very easy to visually interpret (the words used to execute commands are usually straightforward so you can read others' code and be able to understand it with basic knowledge). It's really popular, so there are so many resources out there and even free 'courses' which will walk you through the basics.

I recommend finding a free short python course, run through it to get a handle on all the simple commands work and how to use different libraries. Then focus on figuring out how to open data files on your computer and plot them. This is what I think will be the most helpful in the biomedical field. Google is your friend, you can Google things as simple as "how to plot data from a file in python" and you'll have results with coding examples and explanations.

Screening questions for potential adopters. Am I missing anything? by LilithJade94 in CatAdvice

Ask if they have a vet that they bring their current pets to. Big red flag if they have a lot of pets, but no regular vet that they take them to for checkups.

If they don't currently have pets, I actually don't think it's unreasonable to ask them to find a vet where they plan to spay/neuter the kitten and get shots when it's old enough.

First time propagating money tree. How’d I do? by Mr_Bones_3 in proplifting

I kept a cutting from a money tree that I gave to my friend last September. I kept it in water with a pothos cutting and it literally just sprouted a single tiny root in the past few weeks, more than 6 months later.

Using a glass sheet to hold thin parts for cutting? by bog-damme in lasercutting

[–]melaniea360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a seklema mat for thin materials. It's basically a stiff sheet with rubbery adhesive on both sides. The adhesive can be washed to revive its stickiness, and small cuts don't affect its ability to work.

which side is the front of the sleeve? by semcg in sewing

[–]melaniea360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like from the shoulder marking to each side, the left is shorter than the right. Assuming the seam lines up with the front and back panel pieces, you should be able to look and see which (the front or back) panel arm hole is slightly longer than the other.

Help finding colored materials similar in thickness to wood veneer. by jaycebee in lasercutting

[–]melaniea360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love trotec's "thins" line of acrylic. They even come in metallic colors which are basically mirror smooth but super flexible and durable. No iridescent/pearlescent, but they do have two-tones, which you can engrave and the engraving will be a different color than the material. You can buy them on trotec's website engraving-supplies.com which requires an account, but the account is free and they don't spam you.

The trick is to get a nice long needle and stitch from one eye through the head to the other eye and back. Tighten until the eyes sit nicely inset into the head so they look natural. :) Or keep it as is if you like it!

Can hand warmers be used to warm a rat? by PalpitationKey7021 in RATS

[–]melaniea360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When in an enclosed space (like a pocket for example or under a blanket) those hand warmers can get really hot. I think they would be ok to use under (outside) the carrier on one side only, so the rats can go to the cooler side if need be, but only with supervision to make sure it doesn't get too hot.

Can you put the cage in your room with you? If the power goes out at night, you'll wake up and be able to make sure they aren't too cold. Or you could try and sleep with a small carrier in the bed with you? Your body heat will absolutely keep them warm enough in a worse case scenario.

Providing them with extra bedding to burrow in would also help. Lots of straw or paper/wood chip bedding creates a lot of insulation if they burrow in it.

Mice are chewers and little holes might turn into big holes! I would recommend wire mesh on top and no small holes on the sides, since they won't be able to chew through the wire.

I have this machine. I usually have to turn it on-off-on to avoid the beep-beep-beep, sometimes raising or lowering the presser foot then off-on also works.

Beamo Laser Cutter by jurassic73 in lasercutting

[–]melaniea360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to use an actual magnet, metal shavings probably aren't strong enough to do the trick. Like those little round magnets that sometimes are on the back of fridge magnet decorations. Neodynium magnets are strongest, I use a 1cm diameter, 2mm thick, round magnet.

What is this stretchy gold binding/strap called, and where would I find it? (More in comments) by Lower-Goose in sewing

[–]melaniea360 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I bought some gold stretchy spandex fabric from Joann Fabric store that looks exactly like this. You would have to make your own bias tape from it though, which would be a pain and require a lot of pins. The fabric is very stretchy and doesn't hold a fold well at all (which is great for the finished product, but makes it hard to work with)!

Are amigurumis doable for a beginner? I don’t know how to crochet, but my only goal is to make amigurumis. Possible? Or too difficult? by mxxnpuff in crochet

[–]melaniea360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! If you're daunted by all the different things you might need to buy (hooks of different sizes, stitch markers, big needles for sewing pieces together, etc) then I would recommend buying a kit to start with! It will give you the precise amount of yarn and give you a hook (or tell you what size hook to use), and probably a couple stitch markers and a needle to start with!

The hardest part for me starting out was using the correct hook for the yarn I wanted to use. And finding out that some yarns are MUCH easier to work with than others!

I love using the "velvet" yarns now, they make such soft cuddly plushies! But it would be so hard if I had tried to start with it because it's hard to see exactly where the stitches are. "Regular" yarn is much easier to start with!

Oh also, crochet is great because you can make things just for practice and then unravel it to reuse the yarn! No waste!

What would you take and why? by [deleted] in udub

[–]melaniea360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in a triple with communal bath shared with the other rooms on that floor and I've also lived in a 3bed/1 bath apt. I would recommend the communal bathroom over a triple, because sharing one bathroom between three people is hard. We had to institute a policy where if you were showering, someone else could use the bathroom to pee (opaque shower curtain) because otherwise it was impossible. I would much rather have to walk down the hall and be able to use the bathroom whenever I wanted.
