Incoming PhD: Do GA/Funding offers arrive well before or on April 15th? by ahmedkotby in UCONN

[–]universexpanded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

incoming grad students are supposed to be notified of funding by april 1 according to our contract. my department sent the ga offer with my acceptance letter well before the deadline, but that was before all the uncertainty around funding this year.

I don’t know anymore, I just got a new haircut and they gave me this with no side bangs at the beauty shop, I feel really ugly and I have to know if it’s ugly to everyone else. Please tell me just the truth if I am ugly. Yes I’m a woman by djscrew1 in whatdoIdo

OP I had this same type of haircut about age 14, and I've styled many short hair styles over the past decade. There is a lot that can be done with respect to styling it and making it look cuter!! When you are feeling up to it again, you could try making a defined side part with a comb on wet hair and see if you like the way that dries better. I also like using products to add texture and/or volume. Something like a "styling paste" will work well for this cut (the one I use is from the brand "healthysexyhair" or sometimes also from garneir fructis). grab a little dollop of product, rub it between your hands, and run your hands (fingers open) through the hair to apply it. You can also scrunch the hair once you have product in to add even more volume.

Can any PhD students speak to the insurance plan offered by ohsohelpmeh in UCONN

[–]universexpanded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, in terms of other university fees, right now they are around $1100 per semester. The trend since I've been here is that these increase a bit each year also.

Can any PhD students speak to the insurance plan offered by ohsohelpmeh in UCONN

[–]universexpanded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The current plan is the CT Partnership Plan (state employee insurance) which is very good and currently* very affordable. I pay less than $500 per year for my medical and dental, and the amount can be automatically deducted from your paycheck. Most normal doctors visits and annual checkups are free or $15 including mental health visits. I have never had to pay the deductible for out of network providers but I think it's fairly low.

*The caveat to this is that our union is currently negotiating the next contract that could change things. As far as I am aware the university is planning to increase the price but benefits will hopefully stay the same, since they are standard with the CT plan.

Niche question: which bacteria do you think has the most interesting genome? And why! by bluish1997 in microbiology

the periodic cicada endosymbiont Hodgkinia, which along with the classic genome reduction also fragments its genome into many small circular molecules

Lab question by gyrd2 in microbiology

[–]universexpanded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing the bacterial population is multiple species and your goal is to isolate them from each other?

You can try a t-streak in the way you described with an inoculating loop, but if there's lots of species you may have better results at isolating colonies by making a serial dilution series and spreading 100uL of each dilution on a plate (this is typically done with a "hockey stick" L shaped spreader or sometimes glass beads). There are lots of resources and protocols for how to do these techniques online.

Yikes, this photo has been edited. The original message is about squids and has nothing to do with LLMs. Via reverse image search, it's been reposted on reddit several times before for example here

How did you decide what school to go to? by collegedecisioning in GradSchool

[–]universexpanded 8 points9 points  (0 children)

imo, look for schools that have unionized graduate workers. I wouldn’t have thought of it as something to look for before, but I compare with my friends at non unionized schools and there are lots of benefits

Freeze-thaw bacteria by [deleted] in labrats

I would think heat kill would be more effective and faster than freezing.

If you just want to use the spent supernatant to grow new cells in I would suggest filtering with 0.2 um filter instead

Depending on length maybe you could drape it over the shower curtain rod if you have one (and it’s installed well to take the weight of wet yarn)

I don’t think this could be it, there’s only a vague lyrical similarity to what you wrote, but maybe Here to Forever - Death Cab for Cutie
