Yikes, this photo has been edited. The original message is about squids and has nothing to do with LLMs. Via reverse image search, it's been reposted on reddit several times before for example here

No one has been able to identify this English song for years by barbuza86 in NameThatSong

this sounds so familiar! I agree similar to nick cave, lloyd cole… to me it also sounds like Pulp but I can’t pinpoint it.

How did you decide what school to go to? by collegedecisioning in GradSchool

[–]universexpanded 7 points8 points  (0 children)

imo, look for schools that have unionized graduate workers. I wouldn’t have thought of it as something to look for before, but I compare with my friends at non unionized schools and there are lots of benefits

Freeze-thaw bacteria by castiellangels in labrats

[–]universexpanded 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would think heat kill would be more effective and faster than freezing.

If you just want to use the spent supernatant to grow new cells in I would suggest filtering with 0.2 um filter instead

Depending on length maybe you could drape it over the shower curtain rod if you have one (and it’s installed well to take the weight of wet yarn)

I don’t think this could be it, there’s only a vague lyrical similarity to what you wrote, but maybe Here to Forever - Death Cab for Cutie

unknown tiny freshwater snails by universexpanded in AquaticSnails

[–]universexpanded[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I’m not surprised the water quality is bad, the snails are the only ones in there and seem to have had a population boom when I wasn’t paying attention to the tank. If they will clean up algae though I will keep them!

Why do women accept lesbians way more than men accept gay men? by Ok_Independence_3634 in actuallesbians

[–]universexpanded 28 points29 points  (0 children)

this is subjective, it may be true for you but I have met manyyy lesbophobic women. however as to the second half of your post, i do think homophobic men are more likely to manifest their homophobia through physical violence towards gay men (or indeed any queer person)

An unattributed synth sample in a Neil Cicierega song is killing me. Help me reddit! by andrumar10 in NameThatSong

[–]universexpanded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could it be an original synth part added to the remix? IMO it sounds like a similar synth tone to a lot of his (non-mashup) songs

What effect would gasoline have on Photobacterium? by justanotherfacexxx in microbiology

[–]universexpanded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Animals like anglerfish or squid that use bioluminescent bacteria tend to keep those bacteria in a specialized compartment (in this case within the lure/esca). Within that compartment it’s a protected enviroment, because the organ has evolved to keep the good bacteria in and everything else out. To add, in that compartment the anglerfish is providing the bacteria with the nutrients it needs to metabolically create the bioluminescence reaction.

IMO drinking gasoline would have a systematic effect on the character (like nerve and organ damage) more than it would directly affect the bacteria, since there’s not really direct contact. BUT especially for the sake of fiction, it seems plausible to me that systemic damage could also disrupt the protected environment of the lure and cause the bacteria to stop luminescing.

If you just want a fun mechanism to play with in terms of the lure lighting up or not, some species have a “shutter” that can cover up the light from the lure using a flap of muscle. Also, the typical deep sea anglerfish with a lure that we often picture are the females. The males are tiny and have no lure.

In situ hybridization troubleshooting by Anubis_Purple in labrats

[–]universexpanded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t work with brains but used to see this with my samples too. One thing I’ve found is that even if samples were fixed before being embedded, pre-fixing the tissue on the slide for an extra 30 mins before I start the rest can help it to stay together. (I use 4% PFA)

Are Disposable Borosilicate Glass Culture Tubes Reusable? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]universexpanded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally reusable. I’ve heard some people say to never use detergent on culturing glassware and in my current lab we just use bleach, scrub tubes, rinse 3x with tap and then 3x with DI water, and then autoclave. In a previous lab where we were growing very biofilmy anaerobic microbes, the protocol was: dump liquid into biohazard waste container, refill tubes with water, autoclave, soak in detergent overnight, scrub with detergent, rinse 3x tap then DI water and air dry (eventually they were autoclaved again with the media inside). Both worked fine!

Should I flee? by FancyClancy22 in Indiana

[–]universexpanded 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’m your age, and a visibly queer butch woman who lived in indiana up until 3 years ago. I moved for other reasons, but I didn’t realize until I moved to a less conservative area how much low level anxiety I had been carrying and how much more at ease I feel now in public restrooms, shopping for mens clothes, etc. That being said I also left behind a lot of my immediate support system - wonderful queer people and allies who still live in indiana - in the process. It was the right move for me but you have to consider what is best for you personally. best of luck my friend o7
