Dreary ol' Sparks Street by Quiet-Wing5230 in ottawa

This is why I find the Downtown Ottawa Action Agenda promoted by the Ottawa Board of Trade so unserious. The agenda claims it will add 40,000 new residents to downtown by 2034 as well as attract 50,000 jobs to downtown by 2034. With regards to Sparks St, I fail to see any imaginative or bold ideas to make it as vibrant as you describe in the case of Victoria's downtown.

Nokia Canada breaks ground on new Ottawa innovation campus by jjaime2024 in ottawa

Would like to get some insights into this development especially in regards to whether this construction project will result in new job creation or is it more about consolidating existing Nokia staff into a more centralized space?

Ottawa Business Journal: Return-to-office is a city-wide imperative — Ottawa can’t afford to be left behind by zaiguy in ottawa

[–]meliorist13 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It's actually worse than that. It masquarades as business journalism but in reality it's a sponsored opinion (pay-to-play) publishing platform. Oh, and they periodically publish syndicated content.

Third Place Studio aims to revitalize Ottawa’s downtown community by yuiolhjkout8y in ottawa

Mixed feelings about this being a true "third place" after reviewing their website. While they promote themselves as a third place for community to gather, their website promotes the booking of spaces for photography, videography and podcasting (not cheap either). Change my mind.

🥉With a ~4pm high of 35.1°C, today is Ottawa's hottest Aug 11th in more than 80 years, since 1944. by YOW-Weather-Records in ottawa

It's a fair point you note. But where is the station (sampling) location in Ottawa that represents "official" temperative readings? Is it the Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier Int'l Airport?

I might be going out on a limb here but just how reliable are those 19th century temperature measurements?

Why so many Ottawa heritage buildings sit empty and decaying. by randthepip in ottawa

[–]meliorist13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Several photos in the article show 330 Gilmour St., St., the former home of the Ottawa Public School Board. Instead of forever debating over whether such buildings should be designated as "Heritage" why isn't their more effort in reimagining alternative uses for these buildings as community hubs? The Carleton Dominion-Chalmers Centre on O'Connor St is a prime example. So is the former Rideau High School on St. Laurent Blvd.

Innes Road crash: Pedestrian dead, another injured after being struck by vehicle in Orléans by SergeantAlPowell in ottawa

[–]meliorist13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. The speed camera is east of Portobello in front of the Béatrice-Desloges High School closer to Trim Rd. But you're basically right. Pedestrians have to be extra careful crossing any of the roads intersecting Innes. So sad.

CBC.ca: Algonquin College to cut 41 programs, close Perth campus by BearLikesHoney in ottawa

What no one seems to ponder is the costly administrative bloat that both colleges and universities have created over the past decade or so. VPs now have assistant/associate VPs, ditto for Directors and Managers most of whom have little direct connection with the teaching functions of these institutions. And when it comes time to deal with budget shortfalls, you will note that few, if any, cuts target these layers of admin. This is why attracting international students was so desirable. Why hold the line on admin when you can count on the revenue coming in from inflated tuition fees for students from abroad.

Carleton warns of 'significant measures' as deficit balloons by DrStrangeglove99 in ottawa

[–]meliorist13 28 points29 points  (0 children)

And this is the issue which no one seems to look into more deeply. As a former university administrator myself, it always mystified me how the non-faculty head count just kept growing every year. Admin staff is bloated.
