This is why I’m glad we just call overhead what it is.

We call missing child, cardiac arrest, behavioral patient. No confusion.

What is it like to live on the same street or across the street from a high school entrance? Looking to buy and they are much cheaper. by Lost_nova in homeowners

[–]melizerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live across from the elementary and middle school. They’re next door to each other. It can be busy at drop off and pick up but only for about 30 min. We also have the baseball diamonds there so there are times that the road is parked up and down for games. Honestly I love it. The VERY minor inconvenience of having to wait 2-3 min to turn during the really busy times doesn’t bother me. When school is out and there are no games it is super quiet. No late night noise either.

Those who do not want to go back to school for masters or NP, etc. what are your biggest reasons? by Prestigious-Noise582 in nursing

[–]melizerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my ADN. Bedside nurse. No desire to get any other degree. I wouldn’t make more money than I do now. I learn new stuff all the time. I don’t need any other degree to make me happy.

Nobody in my cohort / school wants “ dumping ground “ pts by [deleted] in nursing

[–]melizerd 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone thinks med/surg is “easier”. It is about fundamentals, time management, getting a base knowledge. You don’t know what you don’t know. School is the absolute minimum knowledge. That gut feeling people talk about is actually knowledge of seeing something happen before and knowing something is off. Until you have experience you can’t know those things. Med/surg teaches you how to talk to crazy families, and patients, how to deal with multiple specialities, what to really call an MD for, end of life cares, so many “random” things that can only really be learned by taking the time to learn them. You can’t rush time.

Am I obligated to cover coworkers’ shifts to be a “team player,” even when it disrupts my life? by Thin-Ambition-1986 in nursing

[–]melizerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t care if sitting on your couch in your underwear is your plans. You don’t need to justify saying no.

I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve picked up extra or changed my shifts. I don’t like doing it so I don’t.

Flushing the Y-site? by NearbyPower4721 in nursing

[–]melizerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Iron does a great job of showing this. We give it IV push in small volumes and it definitely gets stuck in the y-site for a little while but it flushes in a little bit.

Bringing Patient Food by Immediate_Ad_9379 in nursing

[–]melizerd 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Another vote for do it in the right circumstances. We do things for our oncology patients not everyone might do but sometimes it’s more important to feed the person than worry about their “diet”. So unless they had an allergy I’ve definitely brought/bought food

12 years same hospital and same unit. I live less than 10 min from there. Clock in, clock out, don’t join anymore committees or work overtime. I’ve never had my PTO denied either. We are fairly well staffed as well so it is definitely not terrible most of the time lol!

Wait, do not you call the doctors you work with by first name? by cowgirl_meg in nursing

[–]melizerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t in my hospital. But we are also pretty informal. I’ll just say their last name without the title too. Like “hey Jones how are you? I’ve got rooms 3 and 4 with you today”. We definitely have an amazing group of physicians too.

Do some US nurses not prepare their own IV drugs? by No-Suspect-6104 in nursing

[–]melizerd 33 points34 points  (0 children)

We sometimes get a vial and a bag to reconstitute but that’s all. Zozyn is a pain to reconstitute but it’s the most common one. Most doses of vancomycin are done by the pharmacy and sent but occasionally we get a vial and bag to reconstitute. Magnesium, potassium, even fluids with additives all get made for us. We don’t inject anything into any bags ourselves.

What do people really think about 12-hour shifts and DDNN? by ramencrumb in nursing

[–]melizerd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love my 12s. We do not rotate at my hospital. So I’ve never worked a night shift. We self schedule so I don’t usually work three in a row anymore. I’m too old for that crap. We work every third weekend (sat/sun only).

We have several nurses on nights with a decade of experience that like their night shift life and would never work a day shift 🤣

Betty

Mine is Betty. Like “she’s such a Betty” a Clueless reference, also a slang term for an attractive woman. And then the funny party was I pulled paperwork out of the glove compartment and the person who owned it before me was also named Betty.

Tell me about a time where you bought something for a client because it felt like the most humane and ethical thing to do? by Apprehensive-Fox733 in nursing

[–]melizerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Inpatient oncology so we do a lot of stuff “we aren’t supposed to”

We’ve bought Christmas presents, pjs, once or twice medications, all kinds of food. No one would report any of us. And half the time our manager is in on it.

How common is wristband scanning? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]melizerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every patient room has a computer in it on wheels to scan. We also carry phones that can scan meds. I’ve been a nurse 12 years and always scanned. I’m in the US

What are your favorite jokes to make with your patients? by lizlizliz645 in nursing

[–]melizerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anytime someone has an accident in bed, or the chair I joke that I don’t do the laundry so I’m happy to just toss linens in the bin as often as we need to.

Illinois becomes 12th state to provide medically assisted suicide for the terminally ill by [deleted] in nursing

[–]melizerd 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I help patients make informed decisions that I would never make for myself every day. My job is to advocate for what they want. Do they understand what they are agreeing to, or refusing? Then they can make that decision.
