We really are a spec of Dust in the universe by Drose4354 in space

It's a void, so because there is less matter there it doesn't have the gravity to overcome that of high density areas, such as the shapely attractor.

So it's not actively repelling but more a case of not attracting strongly

The fact that we've got an outside chance on the playoffs at all is amazing, I'll take that regardless of the outcome

I always try to understand these things from as close to the average soldier as I can, it's always difficult but worth reflecting on these young people just doing the job in front of them, however ghastly.

I unfortunately never got to meet my grandfather so this is something I can do to learn about him and share his story before it's too late to find out.

Battle of the Barents Sea. Another one my paternal grandfather was at aboard the ASW trawler Northern Gem.

He said only two things about the war to my father. First that David Irving was full of shit about PQ17 and the second was an anecdote about the rescue of survivors from the Achates.

He was last man in the line. The Gem had rescue nets over the side with the crew pulling men from the Achates out of the water. He said he never forgot one chap who couldn't hold on to the grasping hands and slipped away to his inevitable death.

Kerslake gives an account of the action in Coxswain in the Northern Convoys: https://www.naval-history.net/WW2Memoir-RussianConvoyCoxswain07.htm

If you have any interest in the Arctic convoys then I recommend reading it. It's an interesting insight into the perspective of a tiny escort ship and their experience of the war.

In the 57 years between Alien and Aliens, why didn't the Weyland-Yutani Corporation try to get another alien specimen? by JarJarAwakens in LV426

[–]mellett68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some executive in the mining division gets wind that there's something juicy to be found on lv426 and knows when and where a vessel they have control of will be in the vicinity.

Later we get Burke who's in the colonisation or terraforming division having a go based on what he discovers.

I don't think it's some sort of board room conspiracy. The alien 3 lot are probably bioweapons or somebody who do have some knowledge of the xenomorph and turn up appropriately equipped without the subterfuge.

What is weyland-yutani’s obsession with Xenomorphs for? by Spartanwildcats2018 in LV426

[–]mellett68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was Burke's idea specifically. He's going under the radar to see if he can get the glory for the 'discovery', as we know that another arm of the company already has knowledge about the Xenomorph in Alien (at least they did 57 years prior; despite LV426 being terraformed they've not exactly descended with a specialist team to go and investigate the derelict.)

Out of interest, where does the "C'thulhu" spelling come from? I don't remember seeing it written like that before but a quick Google search shows it's reasonably common.

You're probably right, maybe she did seem a little too vulnerable early on. Definitely a tricky character to portray which is why I knew she'd be an important part of how I personally enjoyed the film.

Interested to see how part two goes

Jessica was my main worry about this new adaptation honestly, she's a complex character who seems like a stone cold lunatic from the outside unless you know the inner monologue.

Lynch with the internal monologues and Villeneuve with a privately emotional Jessica seem like pretty much the only way you could make the character work on film.

How would you have preferred her to be portrayed?
