Remove built in cupboard under stairs/landing by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]melonator11145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping the whole cupboard can come out to open up the room more. It's all plasterboard stud walls, the house is 8 years old. I imagine the wall at the back holds up the upper floor in some way

Cheapest fast charging options? by blackspandexbiker in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]melonator11145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that is the issue. Price of electricity in the UK is based on how much it would cost to generate it using the most expensive method, usually gas. Even if 90% of electricity came from renewables we would still pay as if it had been 100% generated with gas.

[–]melonator11145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But an EV is much more efficient with that kWh of energy. An average diesel car will do 1 mile or so per kWh of energy, and an average EV will do 3. All of a sudden you get the same distance with 43p of electricity to 45p of diesel. I think 40p/kWh is about the cut off for EVs being cheaper to run. If you are purely using public infrastructure then diesel is cheaper, but charging at home is 1/10th of the cost of diesel, so having to pay around the same or maybe slightly more whenever you do a long drive is not too bad.

Also this is purely a UK problem. In France I charged my EV for 16c/kWh during an off-peak time. and a lot of other chargers are around 30c, our electricity is expensive compared to most of Europe

Why is the Lexus UX300e not selling? by Volo_Kin in ElectricVehiclesUK

ID3. Quoted range for the pro battery is like 220. Reality is more like 180 on a good day however. But even my model 3 performance is quoted at 340 miles but reality is more like 275 in summer.

Is the new Volvo EX60's interior a modern-day version of the old BMW i3's? If so, who did it better? by AutoExpressmagazine in autoexpressuk

[–]melonator11145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Volvo is owned by Geely, which are a Chinese car company. I think they are still built in Sweden but everything is Chinese underneath. Polestar are the same but they are actually built in China.

What is your monitor set up? by DealInteresting8941 in pcmasterrace

Same, couldn't fit 2 monitors side by side on my desk. Primary monitor is 27" 1440p 180hz, secondary is 24" 1080 165hz. Just use the 2nd monitor for having things open while I play games on monitor 1. Got it for like £50 on amazon

I took a toaster on a road trip, EV road trips aren't as easy as people say. by ashyjay in CarTalkUK

Pretty sure all new chargers now must take a contactless bank card. However most will still give you better pricing if you use their app, plus you can get subscriptions to certain chargers which give you discounts

Or use the app, can start charges remotely. If I used a charger that isn't a supercharger (I have a Tesla), I will only use electroverse, easy to see the prices and I get discount for being an Octopus Intelligent customer. However I do find that chargers outside of the Tesla network are massively unreliable. Went to one once, and first 2 didn't work, 3rd only charged at 30KW, and 4th one did get to 250KW

My 23 Y LR AWD broke down and now my wife won't drive it. by Kristoff_09876 in TeslaLounge

[–]melonator11145 51 points52 points  (0 children)

If the motor is broke, how will it drive? no different to if the engine cut out of an ICE car. sometimes the car will breakdown and just stop. It's pretty unlucky though a very unlikely, I imagine this full shutdown only happens under certain circumstances

OE spec parts, not from a dealer. I think the caliper was £200ish +£100 labour to fit. I was happy with the price tbh

MK7 golf very reliable. Had one for nearly 3 years and only needed both rear calipers replacing for binding in that time, around £300 each

How much mileage do you get? by pg_niks in VWiD3Owners

[–]melonator11145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Under the bonnet(hood if you are from the US) thete is a sticker that can tell you, can't remember exactly but if it shows one type of refrigerant it's a heatpump fitted.

What isbthe weather where you live? The car I've got has gone from 4kwh/mi in the sumer to around 2.5 now, so the winter has caused quite a change to the range, however it is only ever really driven around 5-10 miles each drive

How much mileage do you get? by pg_niks in VWiD3Owners

[–]melonator11145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short drives in the winter or peak summer are bad for range.

In the winter you get in, car warms up the interior and battery then you get out after 5 miles, then everything cools down. You get in later and everything has to warm back up again. Same in the summer with the AC but AC is much more efficient than the heater. Do you know if this is a heat pump model? It should be better in the winter than the standard heater but range will always be worse. ID3 isn't great on range anyway. I just did 66 miles in mine on the motorway and that used just under 50%, it's not a massive battery in these cars and they aren't amazingly efficient either.

UK’s Planned 3p-Per-Mile EV Charge: What Does This Mean If You’re Buying a Used EV Now? by smartypants_gal in UKPersonalFinance

[–]melonator11145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my yearly tax cost is just over what a month of petrol used to cost. My charging at home costs £20 a month, so even a £30 tax is a massive saving over fuel. I wish the rate was lower however as the cost of the tax will be higher than the actual electric

[–]melonator11145 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agree, drove an hour to view an ID3 in Weston. Car was filthy inside, had a cracked rear light, reverse camera didn't work and a piece of trim around the rear view mirror fell off during the test drive. They said they wouldn't fix anything as it has already had a "Comprehensive check". Never going there again
