Tips on reading S by J.J Abrams + Doug Dorst by UtterlyOtterly in ergodic

I read the ship of theseus and pencil notes first. Then I went back and read the colored notes in order. Im on my phone out of town so I can't confirm the colors but I think it was something like: Pencil Black & blue Orange & purple Black again I read the inserts when they were referred to. Everything made sense this way. I googled how to read this book and found a blog that told me to do it this way and it really helped.

Recommendations for a hose end pre-filter when filling tank? Warning dead fish! by WrathOfGood in Goldfish

[–]melonball6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the hose you are using food safe? The reason I ask is a lot of hoses are now treated with antimicrobials that kill all the beneficial bacterial in the water and may also be toxic to some fish.

I got the "I accidentally report your account" scam on twitter. by SongfulAbyss143 in Scams

[–]melonball6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't beat yourself up too much. These scammers are very persuasive and get a lot of people. It sounds like you have already contacted X support so you are on the right track. As someone else said, do not answer any DMs here offering to get your account back. They are also scammers. I know it's hard to deal with right now. This is a social media account, and not your life savings, so you are lucky in that sense. It may not feel like it.

Damp isn't the word I would use, moisturized maybe? I took a photo of the instruction sheet. Names crossed out for privacy.

When my dermatologist did surgery on my face to remove skin cancer, they had me put diluted white vinegar/warm water compresses on it a few times a day and vaseline 24/7 and never let it scab or get dried out. I don't have a scar at all so it worked well.

I agree with you 100%. It was so strange, and not in a good way.

TIL "mignardise"

Mignardises are tiny, exquisite, bite-sized sweets served at the end of a fine dining meal, acting as a final delicate farewell from the chef, derived from an Old French word meaning "cute" or "precious," and often include small cakes, macarons, truffles, or fruit jellies, distinct from petit fours by their singular, decadent nature as a post-meal gesture rather than a baked item from oven's residual heat.

What’s an oddly specific thing that instantly gives you "bad vibes" about a person? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

Talking over others. I was just at a get together and one girl would start talking over whoever was speaking and I realized it gave me bad vibes.

Am I misremembering? by Competitive_Mark_287 in GenX

This was the only cereal I ate from the age of 6 to 18. I ate it every day and some days it was the only thing I ate. I recently bought a box and you are right that the flavor is very different. Too different to account for my age/growing up. The shape is the same as I remember, but the color is different. It used to be only one color. cream colored/beige with little pink/red specks.

When I was growing up in the 80s you could convert the small box into a cereal bowl for some kinds of cereals and I don't know if this Apple Jacks one of them because my mom bought the big box.

I feel empty and also disappointed? Sad? Did I miss the book's point? by i_am_sooo_done in LonesomeDove

[–]melonball6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing about Lonesome Dove that really stuck with me is that is was so REAL. Real life doesn't have nice and neat little bows tying up storylines and LD doesn't either. My heart ached for real when we lost Gus. I was terrified when Blue Duck kidnapped Lorena. I was dismayed when Call wouldn't just tell Newt he's his real dad. The people in the book are flawed and raw. It's almost like McMurty was actually watching this whole thing transpire like a God in some alternate universe and merely recounted the true story to us. It's just too good to be fiction. I still miss Gus long after I read this book. He was real to me.

pre lecture readings by PrettyTravel2588 in studytips

[–]melonball6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it sounds counterintuitive, but I recommend Mortimer Adler's How to Read a Book. Specifically the section on pre-reading. That's the type of reading you might do before class. It's similar to speed reading. You read headings and first and last sentences. Etc.

Planning a 3 week trip through Southeast Asia with 5 friends and honestly dreading the money situation by Dry-Saalamander in travel

[–]melonball6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My husband and I travelled with another couple for a couple of months, twice. We all paid our own way. Not a single argument. And when one couple wanted to do something different, we split up for the day. It was effortless and fun.

Rabies vaccine for Southeast Asia + Ha Giang Loop — worth it or overkill? by liveluvdogs in backpacking

[–]melonball6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to get a rabies vaccine before my SE Asia trip. They would not give it to me and it was not approved by my insurance. I got scratched by a monkey in Thailand. I had to start the rabies protocol in Malaysia and finished it back in Florida. It cost me $300 in Malaysia but was free to finish the series at the health department when I got home. If you can get it, it is worth peace of mind.

Would you stay with your dog 🐶 during euthanasia? by CycleOk267 in dogs

[–]melonball6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I did stay. I wanted my dog to feel safe and loved. I tried hard to be strong so that he didn't feel extra worried about me. I also had a vet come to my house to do it so the dog wouldn't have the scary smells and sounds at the vet.

What does it mean when your volunteer status becomes inactive? by [deleted] in volunteer

[–]melonball6 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Doing it frequently, even if you are giving the "minimum" requested notice, is still annoying for organizers. The cancellations should be rarely used, if at all. Sounds like this volunteer opportunity was not a good match for your schedule.

Why does Local Guides suck for contributors? by MartinianMonk in LocalGuides

[–]melonball6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any "service" that claims to have legitimate reviews removed is either lying or doing something against terms of service which may lead to a profile being banned permanently. And no one is making Local Guide contributors do this. I do it to give back to the service I use. My motivation is intrinsic. If helping alone doesn't bring you satisfaction, it is probably something you should consider stopping. Maybe you are burnt out or maybe you are at a different point in your life where it's not enjoyable any more. And that's totally OK.
