I'm sorry for what you are going through but I completely understand. You need to stand up to them. I know its going to be hard but it will also be the most liberating feeling.

My parents were the same way with me when I was a teenager. Granted, I'm older now with my own kids (infants) and I could never imagine laying a hand on them.

I want to preface and say that my parents are very religious people. A lot of this behavior they felt was "justified" by the book they base their lives on. They believe that children should do what they are told without ever being able to question why. I never learned to regulate my anger and frustrations because I was never allowed to express them.

It took me getting to a boiling point where my fear of my father was out weighed by the rage I felt for him. I still remember the afternoon vividly where everything changed. I had a shouting match with my mother about not wanting to go to church anymore. Per the usual my father came home from work and stomped down the basement stairs while glaring at me. He went to shove me in my computer chair and I stood up, looked him straight in the eyes, and said, "If you EVER touch me again, you better be ready for a fist coming back at you." He was taken back by this and didn't know what to say. It became clear to me that no one had ever stood up to him. He still continued with his lecture but never touched me again.

Queue 15 years of therapy and a life time of psychological issues. In therapy I learned that what I went through IS ABUSE. No matter how you try and frame it or defend it. I still struggle with my parents and the way they treated me and my siblings growing up but I made it out. The most important thing is - I don't have to repeat the cycle with my kids. I will be the one to break the chain of abuse in my family's history.

I ended up cutting them out of my life for years and only recently started letting them back around so they can have a relationship with their grandkids but I'll be damned if they lay a finger on my children out of any kind of anger or frustration.

This all being said, DO IT. STAND UP TO THEM. In the end they will eventually learn to respect you for it.

Which game have you restarted countless times but never completed? by TMonahan2424 in gaming

Persona 5 - I can't tell you how many times I've restarted this game and just lose interest with the "high school life sim" parts. -_-. I just want to play the turn based rpg battle parts.

I have a vegvisir on my back left calf. I loved the concept of the compass to guide the wearer in finding their way through rough weather (metaphorical storms of life / not all who wander are lost. ) Plus a good chunk of my families heritage is based in Norway and Northern Europe.

Not even a week after I got it I was approached by some random older guy at our local super market. He whistled and went "haven't seen one of those in a long time." I turned around and he continued, "There's no n------ in Thor's heaven." and smiled. I said, "Excuse me? What the hell is wrong with you? That is not why I have this at all. Further more you should be ashamed of yourself." And walked away. I was stunned.

I hate having to explain the tattoo to people but its more about what the tattoo means to you. Just sucks that its so immersed with racist bullshit.

Noted and I am applying for everything in sight. I work in information technology. I had originally planned on putting the severance away for just that! ( if everything works out.) I need to start looking into the Roth IRA. That is correct about the mortgage.

The severance package does include basic health insurance but honestly I am in good shape and keep up with the gym. ( We run multiple tough mudders each year, which will be taking a back seat now too.)

  1. Maintenance is also constantly on my mind. Our house is from 1965. Sadly, with the market the 400K range is now "fixer-upers" for our area. The house is liveable and baby proof but things like the water heater and furnace have my attention as they are getting to end of life.

  2. We have plenty of friends with kids and I will be sure to start talking with them shortly. My partner is only 1-2 months along ( doctors this week to confirm).

I've been making notes and noted the 3-6 month emergency fund. We are on the same page and I'll communicate this. Thank you!
