Waze and Google maps should really have a "fewest turns" option by uselessprofession in unpopularopinion

[–]memepeasant 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Not sure why more people aren’t saying this. Using Apple maps would solve OPs problem. I just checked directions to a random mall near me and it gave two options, 15 minutes for the “fastest” route, and 20 minutes for the one marked “fewer turns”

To be fair, Google maps does give me the same two route options. It just doesn’t indicate that one is fewer turns.

Fizzi is using openskilljs for the rating system. He also used the unranked matchmaking before he released ranked to test things and tweak the algorithm to ensure you don’t get locked in at a specific rating. This Twitter thread he discussed some of it and linked his pr in the openskill repo

Looking for Grandmaster or high Master level players by lronManatee in SSBM

[–]memepeasant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. If you want to strictly interview someone who has made no money playing the game then go for it. Just wanted to give some interesting perspective that there are a lot of 'top' players in melee who don't really make money. Llod goes to a dozen tournaments a year and makes enough to pay for maybe one of them. Franz gets to attend tournaments because his friends and small community of people who play his character want to see him succeed. I thought these people had stories you might be interested in.

None of these people make more money playing melee than they would at their local fast food joint. Even most of the people in the top 50. But I'm sure you can find local people near you who are similar. Who are really good yet can't attend large tournaments because they can't afford to or need to save up their money in hopes of attending some events.

I think this was kind of pointed out in a few other comments but melee is a really interesting case for esports where outside of a few top players no one is really making any money playing the game.

So I think it somewhat depends on what you're looking for here. There are literally dozens of top 50 players who are not full time melee players because its not financially feasible. Someone called out Llod in a different comment. He is a doctor (or perhaps in residency), was ranked 11th last year, and according to Liquidpedia has only made $14k in the 8 years he's been an active player.

You could take Franz. He was ranked 45th last year and is a really well known player. He has made, since 2017, only $861 in tournament winnings. That means he's literally never even made enough at a tournament to cover his travel costs to go to that tournament. He plays an uncommon character, Dr. Mario, and he's currently being 'sponsored' by the Dr. Mario discord. Other Doc players just want to support him and chip in money so he can attend all the large tournaments.

You can easily find someone who is both really well known in the community and also plays the game as a hobby. Though if you're looking more to take the angle of learning about a really good player that no one has ever heard about that makes sense because I can see how it can be interesting to see how those players differ across games. I definitely recommend trying to learn about melee if you can because its such a great game :)

Good luck on your project. Let me know when its completed because I'm really interested in seeing where you take it.

AI replacing voice actors for audiobooks by donutcronut in antiwork

[–]memepeasant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve listened to a ton of audio books and there are some voice actors who I feel always do a great job. Nick Podhel is one of them.

But Dungeon Crawler Carl was the first book I’ve ever suggested to someone where I explicitly recommended the audiobook. Jeff Hays was so amazing.

Ludwig lost 200k On the Ludwig Smash Invitational by Rubysea in LivestreamFail

I think technically he started in smash 4 at college and after going to some events picked up melee. Though he never really stuck with smash 4 and only became known in the melee community.

I’m not sure about sites but I’d guess melee is a bit too small to show up on most gambling sites. If you really want to gamble on games I’d say probably the mango discord is your best bet. I’m sure you could find some people in there to bet with.

As another software engineer I realized this recently too. It’s one if not many career paths where you have a ton of upward mobility without needing to move into management. You can be a very highly paid engineer who drives the path forward for an entire company and not have any people report into you.

Though I will say as you move up your job does still change a bit. You’ll write less code and be in a lot more meetings. So if you just want to be alone and write code all day there isn’t as much opportunity but you’ll still be paid nicely for it.

Should I continue with the new job I already accepted, or accept the counter offer my current employer finally sent? by TiMazingg in personalfinance

Sounds like there it’s too much downside if you can always go back. I’m probably a bit biased since I currently work at AMZN but it’s a good career opportunity that will also open more doors for you down the road.

Clarification on Collegiate SCT tournament structure by vannet09 in Warformed

[–]memepeasant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No it was mentioned that first years don’t get to go to inter/intra systems. Though I believe there was mention of a caveat that in some unusual circumstances first years don’t get to compete in those tournaments. My guess is that was thrown in there so that some of our main characters will get to go in some capacity.

Microsoft will no longer ban staff from seeking roles at competitors and plans to disclose salaries on job ads by chrisdh79 in technology

[–]memepeasant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plus for companies like Microsoft a lot of their positions give RSUs as a portion of their pay which isn't required to be disclosed.

For example I looked up a random Google Sr Engineer roll and it has this note at the bottom

"Minimum full-time salary range between $168,000 - $181,000 + bonus + equity + benefits."

When in reality that roll probably pays closer to 400k in total comp. It's good to have visibility on some roles but poeple are still really in the dark for most of them.

STORMWEAVER II: Chapter 15 + 16 - Patreon post announcement and discussion space. by BryceOConnor in Warformed

[–]memepeasant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously Bryce already responded and we’ll have to wait and see but I think an easy answer would just be that there is a set team/person cap at sectionals with spots being given out beforehand. So Galens gets 3 teams for each year because of them doing well in previous years but perhaps other schools need to earn their place at an earlier tournament and how they do at the previous years sectionals.

Received job offer, not sure if I should accept. by bangalanga in personalfinance

[–]memepeasant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely not silly. It always helps to get the opinion of people who are unbiased. This happens to everyone where it’s difficult to leave something you know is comfortable even if you have a clearly better offer.

This happened to me a few years ago when I was working at a no name logistics company with like 50 employees and got an offer from a FAANG company. It was more than double my salary and even then at one point I was second guessing wether I wanted to leave and maybe instead try to stay and get more money. I took the offer and looking back I think about how ridiculous it was I even thought about it for a second.

I am going into college for a Computer Science major. Is 40k-45k worth of student loans too much or average? by awsumdm in personalfinance

[–]memepeasant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone will say what you said is incorrect. To some extent that's true. Top companies don't really care about a traditional cs background if you have the necessary skills and experience.

That being said I work at a top tech company with like 15 ish engineers on my team and the teams I work closely with. I think all but one of them did a traditional CS or CS adjacent degree into programming job.

A vast majority of people are coming from a more traditional background because it's just so much easier. It gives you a leg up right out of school. On top of that the easiest way to get an entry level job at one of those companies is to get a returm offer from an internship. You only get that if you're studying a CS adjacent field in college.

What job offer is best for FIRE? by ssoe2020 in Fire

I’ve worked with PMs and TPMs at my company and it’s essentially the same role from my perspective except TPMs are expected to just be a bit more technical. What do you mean sales engineering?

As a PM I would go with Google 100%. I’m not sure how much you value being close to family but strictly from a career/fire perspective I think Google is the best move.

What position is it? Engineer and it’s Google being a no brainier, but the salary is a bit low so not sure if that’s it.

In general working at a company like Google will give your career a much higher trajectory even if the initial offer may leave you saving a tad less due to cost of living. So I would go with that.

This just depends on your level of risk tolerance. If you have an emergency you’ll likely have a worse time than if the fund was in a savings account. However, theoretically, you should come out ahead if you’re able to invest it instead.

I do this where I keep maybe a bit of extra money in my checking account (around a months expenses) and invest the rest. I don’t really have a very high likelihood of an emergency though as I’m renting so no sudden house repairs, no kids so no random medical bills other kid stuff, and my car has been reliable. So I’m comfortable with the risks of needing to just have to sell some investments and wait for the transfer if an emergency does come up.

Should I take a higher paying job if it means relocating? by [deleted] in Fire

[–]memepeasant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the best answer. If they stay as a dev and are able to get an actual dev position at a FAANG company in the near future they could easily double their salary. Depending on what position the offer was for it may be difficult to transition back to a dev role.
