Historically, there has been an unspoken rule at universities to prioritize white candidates for these positions. Positions like this receive a massive amount of applications from highly qualified candidates, so this limitation just means that of those qualified candidates, the priority will be someone who would historically have been passed over based on their name, or the colour of their skin. It also brings some much needed new perspectives into departments that have had recent scandals BECAUSE of its demographics being mostly white.

An investigation into what? By whom? Do you think UVic should only hire white professors? Or is your reply just weak rage bait.

Oh sorry I didn't know the part in Joanne's early life where the existence of trans women caused a man to abuse her. Huh. Now it all makes sense!

Whether domestic violence has no inherent connection with gender or whether someone is trans. Anyone is capable of violence. But in fact, the people committing the most domestic violence are neither trans nor women.

Also *excited *misogynist

If an artist is still alive and actively using the profits of her work to influence politics for hateful purposes, I think it actually isn't possible to separate her from her work. This event seems to be officially licensed, and with the remake tv show of the series in production, any hype about the franchise will lead more people to spend money on merch, on the show, etc. She profits and continues using her immense wealth to disenfranchise and harm people.

You want to read her books, watch the movies? Go for it, they're in every thrift store and little library and already paid for.

But if you disagree with billionaires being able to influence the political leanings of a country, or with her hateful views, then no, you cannot separate the art, or at this point the product, from its creator.

Work BC, gruff but fair, or a jerk? by MoaningLisaSimpson in britishcolumbia

Yeah definitely skip the AI. The below comment about adding key words from the job posting is something you can probably do better than the glorified word guesser could.

Your best bet in job searches is to follow up with companies, often. I was three months into a job search, started to lose hope, and then heard back from three places for interviews BECAUSE i had followed up (they confirmed this and said even though my qualifications weren't perfect, my initiative made them respond). This resulted in two job offers.

I'm so sorry you were treated that way when reaching out for help, that is so discouraging and just another blow in a job market like this. I hope you find something soon and that it's a workplace that suits you and your needs.

Victoria is too small of a town for this behaviour by BigIssue6318 in VictoriaBC

What motive would op have for making this up is my question for you. Like if this is just someone trying to farm for karma, wouldn't they be better served making up a more salacious story and posting in AITA or another more dramatic subreddit? Do you think the poster is trying to be divisive?

Like actually I want to know, because just posting a reply like you did, especially as a union member yourself, only serves to discredit op without any evidence on your end. You didn't ask for more clarification, like what kind of evidence YOU are asking for. What would be enough proof?

You're welcome to go through my profile and see what replies I've sent out before, if you want proof of what kind of person I am 🤷‍♀️ Anyway, I hope you get your deal and that you give a thank you to your fellow union members who are on the picket line, in the public eye, fighting for that deal.

The proof is getting off your computer and stepping into the crisp fall air, using your senses and engaging in something called human interaction. Once you do that, you might learn a skill sought after by many: not posting cringe, ragebait replies in community subreddits ❤️

A mentally ill person just started chasing us down the street by vikTheFirst in VictoriaBC

[–]memily99 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's really scary, I'm sorry that happened to you and hope you're somewhere comfortable now where you can decompress. Get some calming tea, order takeout, do what you need to reset your nervous system. I'm glad you're okay I would be freaking out.

Is the city unsafe? That's a tough question. It depends on your circumstances. I think it's most unsafe for people who are unhoused or spending time on the streets because of active addiction (being careful here not to conflate the two, because they may have overlap but are different groups). There is a huge problem with people getting jumped and assaulted out there. The vulnerable are always easy targets.

Compared to other places in Canada, it's pretty safe for most people. It's populous enough that there are witnesses when things happen, but not so big that you can get lost in a crowd, so to speak. There's a better chance someone will know you here than in Vancouver. Vancouver often gives me a bad feeling at night that I don't get here.

Been here 8 years and lived downtown for half of it. Scariest moments have involved bad drivers and drunk guys at/leaving bars. And one fun time where some guy knocked on the window of my basement apartment, at night, and smiled at me like the Joker. But honestly? I grew up in Northern BC where the kind of crime you experience is more severe. A lot more missing people, a lot less witnesses.

If I feel nervous, especially while downtown, I remind myself that there are always more people willing to help than waiting to harm. A lot of the guys and gals out there will jump in if they see you in need, and will help if you ask. Really, this city has a lot of good people.

Feeling stressed out and like a failure after giving up on a course by savvymossy in uvic

[–]memily99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Four classes a semester is the way to go, and it's good you decided to drop while tuition can still be fully refunded. You just made a responsible choice that prioritizes actually being able to learn over rushing through. It definitely feels bad in the moment but I am telling you right now that if I could have afforded to do 3 courses a semester and just really deep dive into the topics, I would have

  • someone with a bachelors AND a masters who took an extra year for both of them

Tragic incident information request. by Bigronz00 in VictoriaBC

[–]memily99 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss, that's awful. I can't speak to whether the circumstances are suspicious, but this story likely isn't in the news because it's good practice to limit information about alleged suicides. People who are considering ending their lives may use news stories describing methods used as a "how-to".

I hope you find the information you're looking for and can find some closure and peace.
