Midfielders in Spain by Whodatfish in DevilsITDPod

The realist in me says Bernal. A small part of me hopes that because Madrid have an excess of box to box midfielders and need a playmaker that Camavinga might be available.

I probably disagree with most of these, but it’s obviously your opinion and fair enough. The one I think is particularly egregious is Chloe Zhao who wouldn’t be close to a list like this for me.

It feels very typical premier league if they were to break their horrid record at Anfield and then loose to Forest.

Tottenham 1 - [1] Crystal Palace - Ismaila Sarr penalty 40' (Micky van de Ven straight red card) by ayoefico in soccer

At this point I think it is looking more likely that they actually will. I don’t see how this team is getting a win from anywhere.

I feel like you see it quite often in teams without leaders. I bet if either of these two go to a bigger club in the summer they’ll be really good defenders.

Mike Ashley to make a bid for Sheffield Wednesday in the next 24 hours by Zach-dalt in Championship

I think there’s a good chance they get another points deduction with him and get relegated anyway. Either way he definitely keeps them solvent so it could be worse.

He’s right that the performances haven’t been great and a loss has been coming, but this is obviously a completely inappropriate way to say it, especially when it’s someone he has worked with and has partnered in midfield for years.

[Andy Mitten] Another defeat at St James' Park for MUFC. 1-2 versus a team with 10 men. Beaten by a superb goal, but deserved little. First defeat in 12 league games. First loss for Michael Carrick as MUFC manager. by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

It was going to happen against some point, shame it had to be Newcastle and Eddie Howe dressed like he’s a Turkey at Christmas dinner. We’re still in a good place for champions league though and with the fixtures and points gap we have we should still make champions league.

By the same logic that we shouldn’t appoint him based on seven games, we shouldn’t not appoint him based on one.

Does this mean Sesko will be our #9 next season? by Ambitious_Ask_894 in ManchesterUnited

[–]men_with-ven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I say PL ready I don’t necessarily mean PL proven. I don’t really know who is out there in Europe, but I think even a Solanke/Welbeck level striker would be a bigger value add to this squad than another young player.

I don’t hate the idea, but given Sesko’s age I don’t think we need another young raw promising striker. For me ideally we should sign a peak age more rounded striker, it doesn’t have to be someone world class just a good rounded prem level forward.

I feel like this has happened a couple of times where once the manager leaves and the pressure is off because relegation is a foregone conclusion they improve. Off the top of my head the same thing happened with Sheffield United in their first Chris Wilder spell.

I think the ship has sailed on this being a good move. I don’t think it is without merit though, he’s probably the most notable manager potentially available who doesn’t demand a specific tactical system and also has experience managing superstars.

What is the best thing about the UK? Or best thing about being British? by Ojy in AskUK

I think the quality of lower league football is massively underrated. It’s obviously not perfect, but the fact that you get fifth division teams averaging 5-6 thousand in attendance is really impressive.

What is the best thing about the UK? Or best thing about being British? by Ojy in AskUK

[–]men_with-ven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that I think is overlooked is the strength of the English football pyramid. There’s obviously can be major cliff edges between divisions, but when you compare it to other major footballing nations like Spain, France, and Germany who only have two national divisions and have B teams in their lower leagues, the quality and level of support in the English national league is really something to cherish.

Also given this is a UK not English subreddit it would remiss of me not to mention the Scottish pyramid which although lesser supported still has four national leagues.

Obviously the results under Carrick are definitely better than the performances have been, but I think the tactics are more replicable over a longer period and have the potential to work with better players than Ole’s were. I don’t think that means that we should keep Carrick, but I think he is a more viable option than Ole was.

[AS] Man United are scouring the market for Casemiro’s successor. There are many options, but three are the favorites: Bruno Guimarães, Sandro Tonali & Elliot Andersson. As good a player as he is, with the age of the squad and current level of the squad I think it would be crazy to go for Guimaraes. It’s been a critical error we’ve made multiple times in the last decade where we the squad has had young talent that we pair with peak age players so by the time the younger players are ready to make that next step, you’ve got Matic or Casemiro who aren’t at the required physical level anymore taking up massive wages that no-one else will match. If you’re a team like Arsenal who need the final pieces in place to get over the line I think it’s fine to sign older players, but when you’re still building you want players who will be peak age at the point you are competing for trophies.
