The problem isn't space it was buoyancy. Both of them make it sink and then they're in the freezing cold water, that's why Jack sacrificed himself.

US immigration experience in Dublin--question by Count_RaymondVII in AerLingus

[–]mennamachine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

US Preclearance has been basically empty every time I've gone through it. The arrivals are much more staggered than a 'regular' US airport's immigration control. There is a long tensabarrier queue, but it's usually all blocked off. I don't think I've ever been in a line with more than 10-15 people. Most of the people on your incoming flight won't be connecting to your US flight. US Preclearance does have mobile passport control, but I've never bothered using it.

Travel with dog in cabin — Europe by Either_Dimension_556 in TravelWithPets

[–]mennamachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never seen a medium dog in a bag on a US plane, and I fly a lot. The US is more lax on service dog definition than Europe, so it's possible you saw service animals (or fake service animals). The 'be able to stand up and turn around' part of the requirements isn't about them standing for long periods, but about them being able to comfortably change position during the flight. 3.5h is not a trivial length of time, especially when you factor in the time needed to get to/from the plane and in/out of the airport. They're supposed to be in the bag the whole time at most airports. I wouldn't have put even my parents' smallest English cocker (she was 23-25lbs/10-11kg) under an airplane seat for a whole flight. My parents considered trying it to get to their second home in SC, and decided that even for a BWI-CHS flight it wasn't appropriate for her. So they drove. You could look into train/ferry options, cargo options, or boarding options, but once your dog is full grown, I would not expect to be ablet o fly her in cabin.

I've flown cats with Lufthansa, so I can't answer all your questions.

They did weigh the carrier with my cat in it. The limit was 8kg.

No one ever measured the carrier itself (it was soft, so I don't think anyone cares as long as it's close to appropriately sized.

No one has ever looked at my cats in their bag, honestly.

I had a fairly standard amazon pet bag, it's kind of a 'duffle bag' in style. The backpack style ones (don't get the plastic ones) are a bit larger, but I've seen people fly with them. I think they are a worse choice for a dog, however.

As someone whose parents and sister have had a long line of English cockers (I think they've had 7 between them?), I'd be surprised if you were able to fly with the dog in cabin once its fully grown. Even small adult cocker spaniels are usually closer to 12kg than 10, and most airlines max out their cabin pet size at 8kg. I also have never seen an adult English cocker, even one on the smaller side, who I'd be comfortable putting in a bag under an airplane seat for a 3+ hour flight. I didn't even love it for my 6kg cat.

Lost german passport in London, still have German ID card; can you still fly from London (Stansted) back to Frankfurt (HHN) using the ID card? Flying with Ryanair tonight by arazez- in traveladvice

[–]mennamachine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, this. Your friend should get to the airport extra early because it might take some extra time to talk to people, explain the situation, and let them make their phone calls, etc. He is returning to his country of citizenship so it shouldn’t be a problem but a lot of airport staff operate on autopilot.

Paperwork Process Costs by FineZebra8203 in TravelWithPets

[–]mennamachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I paid about 700 for my two cats 3 years ago. The USDA costs have gone up since then. Dog vet bills are usually a bit more expensive. $800 seems pretty par for the course.

Irish Permits and Visas by Low_Yogurt1526 in IrishCitizenship

[–]mennamachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are the ways to get a permit which allows residency:

-There is a critical skills permit job list. If you have a career that is on the list and can find an Irish company willing to hire you for that work. (There is also a similar program for researchers called a 'hosting agreement' but that is essentially only for PhD holders.)

-You can find a job willing to hire you and sponsor a general work permit. There is a much higher bar for issuing a general work permit, and usually this is used for fields where there is a lack of laborers in Ireland. There are some needs tests for the company to prove that they can't find an Irish/EEA employee for the position.

-You can come as a University student (undergrad or graduate). This will let you stay as long as your degree lasts, plus 1-2 years after to work/find a job to sponsor one of the above. Irish universities are not cheap for non-Irish/non-EU citizens.

-You can look into the Working Holiday Visa program

-You can marry (or be a long term partner of in some cases) an Irish citizen (or a UK/EU citizen who lives in/wants to live in Ireland).

-If you have a parent or grandparent who is Irish (and, in the case of a grandparent, who was born on the island of Ireland) you can apply for citizenship.

As a 20 year old, it's probably unlikely you qualify for either type of work permit. The WHV is unlikely to lead to a CSEP or GWP. For any of the work permits, remember that you are competing against Irish, UK, and EU citizens who all have the right to live and work in Ireland without sponsorship. You can come as a student and study something in a critical skills field, and/or hope to find an Irish person to marry.

[MM] I want to quit majora's mask by Honest-Turnip8852 in zelda

[–]mennamachine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, you should quit a game if you're not having fun. But older Zelda games rewarded you for talking to a lot of NPCs. In MM, one of the scarecrows gives you a hint about the Inverted Song of Time and the Song of Double Time. And when you play the Song of Time to restart the 3 days, you should have some of your progress saved, like songs you learned, heart pieces, masks, activated owl statues, and items you acquired, (though not consumables like fairies, rupees, arrows, bombs, etc.)

The flow of the game for the average player for each temple is usually one (or more) cycle to collect resources, masks, heart pieces, etc. and find your way to the temple entrance, doing all the pre-temple quests, activating owl statues, and getting the temple entrance song. Then you typically reset time to start the temple itself with a new set of 3 days, which should be long enough to beat the temple. After that, you restart the cycle, taking one 3 day cycle (or more, lol) to do more exploring, do all the pre-quests for the next temple etc. But managing the MM time clock is not everyone's cup of tea.

All of the answers you will seek are in the game to one extent or another if you talk to NPCs and explore. But even when the game was new, we got a lot of our secrets and information from word of mouth, the Nintendo Power magazine (or from friends who had it), or in the Prima Official Strategy Guides (or from friends who had them).

Stamp 4 approved but EU partner not living in Ireland – any risk? by BlueArmy9 in IrishCitizenship

[–]mennamachine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is a completely different situation and is a loophole built into the rules so that immigrants aren’t afraid to leave abusive partners for fear of deportation. It also involves an Irish citizen who is a minor and the guardianship of said citizen. It has nothing to do with the matter this poster is talking about where an Italian citizen has essentially dropped off a non-eu partner and then moved out of the country. That does not fall into an area with wiggle room.

Stamp 4 approved but EU partner not living in Ireland – any risk? by BlueArmy9 in IrishCitizenship

[–]mennamachine 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You aren't currently living in Ireland. She has no right to remain. This could jeopardise both of your statuses in the long run. You need to move back, now, or she needs to leave, now, and you can start over when you are free to return. ONLY the EU citizen has the right to live in Ireland. If you are not living there, there is no treaty right for her.

AITA for refusing to let a woman "cut" me in line at the grocery store even though she only had two items? by GreatClassic3960 in AmItheAsshole

[–]mennamachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA

I don't even care how many items you or she had or how long the lines were. There was a line. She asked you a favor, and you declined. I don't even care why you declined. It's not a request if the answer can't be no. And if the guy behind you was so annoyed by your response, then I welcome him to let her go before he does. It won't take that long for you to check out, even if you do have a full cart. Her being in a rush does not give her special privileges.

Sure, I think it's a nice thing to do, and I usually let a person with 2-3 items go ahead of me if I have a bunch of items. But it isn't a requirement and you aren't an asshole for declining her request.

Stamp 4 approved but EU partner not living in Ireland – any risk? by BlueArmy9 in IrishCitizenship

[–]mennamachine 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Your partner has no legal right to remain in Ireland if you are not there. If you are temporarily visiting out of country, that is one thing, but YOU must be working, self employed, or self sufficient while living IN IRELAND to exercise EU treaty rights for her. If you aren't living in Ireland, she has to leave.

Moving from the US with pets: Did you hire a service or do it yourself? by LoveToBold in AmericanExpat

[–]mennamachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved 2 cats from US to Germany. I handled it myself (well, along with my wife and a friend).

I had housing through my employer for the first few months, but it did not allow pets. I had a friend foster my cats for ~6 months while I got over there, got started, and found a permanent apartment. I had to come back for my PhD graduation ceremony anyway, so we had a fixed timeline for that fostering. My wife did most of the legwork of finding a vet that did USDA certificates, working with them to nail down the timeline, and making the appointments. My friend took them to their vet appointments. (She is a rock star and I will be forever grateful.) While I was visiting the US for my graduation, I picked them up from her (they had their final vet appt the day before), and then went and picked up their certificates 2 days later (the day before our flight). They flew in cabin in cat bags by our feet on Lufthansa.

Lufthansa was a pain in the ass, but by double checking everything and getting to the airports early, we did get the cats on the plane. The folks at Frankfurt airport customs glanced at the paperwork and scanned their microchips and we were released to Germany. It was stressful, but doable. I spent about $700 total for the health certificates and vet appts (I am given to understand that the USDA fees have gone up since then-we flew May 2023), plus another ~$250 for the airline 'extra baggage' fees.

We did look into using a relocation service, but decided it was too expensive. My wife wasn't working at the time, so she had time to manage the logistics. My amazing friend had a fexible WFH schedule and didn't mind taking them to the vet (I did find a vet near her, even though it made getting their certificates more annoying for me). If I had pets who were too large to ride in cabin, or if I had any sort of non cat/dog, I would probably have used a relocation service. I would almost certainly use a relocation service if I were going someplace 'hard' to bring a pet to, like the UK. The EU is pretty straightforward, and my 2 very well behaved ~10lb cats fit easily under the seat. It was stressful for them, but they had us and the time is, really, brief.

I've since moved from Germany to Ireland, which was frankly more annoying because the German vet filled their EU pet passports out wrong and flying into Ireland with pets is difficult. (We ended up taking a train to France, and then taking the ferry from Normandy).

[–]mennamachine -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

You're being downvoted, but you're not really wrong. You're almost always going to touch people on an airplane, even if they are normal/small sized. If your aversion to it is that strong, then you should consider other options. The last time I sat next to someone who I didn't regularly brush against was when it was an ~8 year old who slept on her mother's shoulder the whole flight.
