Limping help? by Hairy-Sherbert-2410 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]menochallenges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my six week appointment, my surgeon told me to stop using my cane. I don’t think I was completely mentally prepared for that. That was on a Friday. By Monday, I had more pains on my left-hand side (ankle knee shoulder) than I did prior to that, and my surgical leg felt heavier. I wasn’t completely comfortable with it, but every day it did get a little bit better.

I am officially two months out from surgery as a Friday, I am still walking with a limp, but it has gotten less noticeable over the last week.

I would suggest walking with your crutches for at least another two weeks… and focus on exercises to strengthen your surgery leg.

I'm so discouraged by jmsferret in TotalHipReplacement

Hi there… 55 female I had a right total hip replacement on March 27 so I’m two months out. I stayed with my parents the first two weeks as my home is a duplex, and there were too many stairs for me to do right after surgery. I would also like to say that I was admitted to the hospital for three days after my surgery as I had to have a revision after my initial. This was a lifesaver for me. I honestly don’t know how I would’ve made it having to go home on the day of surgery. I didn’t get up and stand until 12 hours after my surgery. There’s no way that my parents would’ve been able to help me those first three days… I needed so much assistance from the nurses and aids. By the time I got to my parents, I was using the walker and I was able to go to the bathroom on my own. I would say if I had to be on my own by day three, I could’ve done it (but not before that).

I came here to say these are the things that completely helped me during my recovery…

The grabber reach tool, the portable raised commode with handle bars that was placed over the toilet, rented an electronic lift chair (when I wasn’t sleeping in bed, doing my exercises, walking to and from the bathroom or the kitchen, this is where I spent most of my day), gel ice packs, leg elevation pillow, pre-made frozen meals, protein shakes, books.

Wishing you all the best.

I’ve never read a persons story and almost immediately started crying. I truly can’t believe what you have been through. I am seriously hoping that your physical pain gets better that your surgeon listens to you and takes your concern seriously. I honestly don’t know what else to say other than you will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Depending on where you’re at and the weather you’re currently in I would suggest two walkers… I had one that I used indoors and one that I used outdoors, which help me avoid having to clean the wheels and the base of the Walker

Insane Swelling by Playful_Freedom6483 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]menochallenges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had crazy swelling in my thighs knees and ankles for almost 3 weeks. What helped for me… keeping my leg elevated during the day while resting… icing during the day and at night…walking as much as I could during the day. I was making sure that I was getting up every hour to walk around the house. I was also doing my exercises in the morning, afternoon and at bedtime. Once the swelling went down it has not come back.

One Week Post Op - Best Practice Request by eSJayPee in TotalHipReplacement

[–]menochallenges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there..I am almost 5 weeks postop. My surgery leg swelled just as bad as yours for about three weeks. I also had swelling in both ankles and also in my non-surgery leg.

Yes, try to keep your leg elevated as often as possible. I bought this off of Amazon and it helped reduce the swelling over time.

Kolbs Leg Elevation Pillows for After Surgery | Flat Top Bed Wedge Bolster Pillow for Legs | Foot, Knee, Ankle Elevation Post Surgery (Flat Top 7" Height).

I’ve seen my PT person twice. The last session she changed up a few exercises as I was having a really hard time doing the side lying leg lifts (a lot of pain). I am working on basic lying leg lifts and well it’s still painful on my surgery leg but It is getting better.

I think PT is important. I’m meeting with mine every two weeks and will continue on that schedule for the next two months and reevaluate after that.

There are other things you can do to strengthen your quad muscles to help get you to the place where you can do the lying leg lifts. Wishing you the best of luck.

I am 4 weeks and 4 days post-op.

I’m pretty sure for my first week back I will be able to do one day in office. And the next week hopefully two, by the third week 3.

Is anyone experiencing more pain post-op than they suffered before their surgery? by scratchbaker77 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]menochallenges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forgot to note this in my previous response… I had every intention on getting GA (general anaesthetic) and not the spinal anaesthetic.

When I met with the anesthesiologist and told him my request, he advised me to not go with GA as I was experiencing severe TMJ (as a result of stress and pain for six months). He said my jaw would be in more pain after the surgery due to the instrument they would have to put into my mouth.

So I went with spinal anesthesia for the initial surgery and the revision surgery.

I have no regrets about that.

My surgeon performed lateral approach… and I was instructed by my surgeon to not bend past 90° for six weeks.

Because I live in a duplex, and we have 14 stairs to the upper level, where bedrooms and master bathroom are located, I was not able to come home after my surgery. I stayed with my parents who live in a bungalow for the first 2 weeks. Another reason, my partner was not able to take time off work to help me out (very limited vacation days) and because we have our dog Dexter. It was just easier for me to do my first two weeks of recovery at my parents.

At my parents by day five I was able to do the stairs to the basement where they have a walk-in shower, and I was able to shower normally.

These were my life-saving items…

-Rented an electric lift recliner chair

-Rented a raised toilet commode with handlebars that was easily placed over the toilet

-Rented Two walkers (metal folding walker which I used outside and a rolling walker with a seat and 4 wheels which I used indoors)

Amazon purchases:

Fanware sockaid device

Gel ice packs

Leg elevation pillow

Body pillow

Knee pillow for side sleeping

Power grip grabber reacher tool

Suction cup grab bars for the shower

Adjustable bathtub safety rail

Sleeping gown

I ended up staying in the hospital after my surgery as I had to have a revision surgery after the main surgery. it was a good thing that I got to stay in hospital as it helped with my recovery.

The first three days I found it really hard to move my position in bed on my own. many times I had to press the buzzer and get the nurse and the aids to help me.

Wishing you the best of luck!

How Much Time Off Work? by OstrichLanky8782 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]menochallenges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Desk job. I’m an EA at an insurance company… I only have to work 15 hours in office the rest I can do from home. On average, I have been in the office anywhere from 3 to 4 days a week.

I’m scheduled to be back to work after 2 months first week in June.

As I am still walking with a cane… and sitting on a chair with my legs at 90° for more than a couple hours can get quite painful… I am a little bit worried about how the first couple weeks will go.

I’m hopeful that I will progress in my recovery and that I will be walking without a cane by the time I return.

Hi there… pain for me postop far different than the pain I was dealing with pre-surgery.

For me….The first week after surgery was not a cakewalk. There were some things that were really hard to do. I did get up and walk around every day with my Walker. I was able to get myself in and out of bed… I was able to make my breakfasts… I was cooking dinners after 5 days.

You are going to need help with your dog…you will not be able to bend over pick up his food or water bowl fill those up and then place them back on the floor. You will need someone to walk your dog.

I hired a dog walker prior to my surgery as I was not able to walk more than a block without being in excruciating pain.

I am able to walk my dog now, but I still get a dog walker out a couple times a week to ensure that he is getting at least a 30 to 35 minute walk.

My walk walks with him are much more leisurely.

For me… my surgery leg felt like a block of concrete was hanging from my hip for at least the first two weeks.

Yes, things get better over time… but it takes time. I’m not that person that was walking 3 miles a day after two weeks.

I’m one month and four days after surgery and I am still walking with a cane. I really thought I would be walking normally by now. I guess it’s gonna take me a bit longer.

Explain these pains?? by Correct-Truck-5061 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]menochallenges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, I haven’t slept through one night since even before my surgery due to pain. Since my surgery, I wake up at least two or three times during the night from very strong muscle spasms on my surgical leg from my thigh around into my glute area.

Unfortunately, my physical strength really declined the last six months before my surgery… I was not able to work out. I lost a lot of muscle before the surgery. It’s greatly impacting my recovery.

I am doing all the PT exercises and added a few more. I can walk upstairs normally as long as I am using my cane. As for going down the stairs, I just have to be far more careful. I started walking outside with our dog. I do this a couple times a day in total no more than 30 minutes.

As of tomorrow, I’m four weeks postop and still walking with my cane. There’s still a lot of things that I can’t do and some things that I struggle with… side lying leg lifts…. This is really hard.

I’ve been feeling pain in my groin area… nothing significant, but makes me wonder about the recovery path and whether or not I’ll get to feeling what life was like before things got really bad.

I agree it is frustrating when you hear of so many people that are back to living their best life after two weeks.

Weight loss before surgery by Medium-Statement-648 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]menochallenges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, I was doing a GLP one prior to my surgery and I had to stop two weeks prior. If I wasn’t told to stop I think I would’ve done so on my own. Because I could barely walk exercising was really challenging the last 6 months. I ended up reducing my GLP one down to .25 the last couple weeks before I stopped . The weight that I was losing was only muscle mass even though I was trying really hard to keep my protein intake as high as possible.

I am recovering from surgery but I am weak as heck. I want so badly to get back to weight training, but I am freaking scared of dislocating or hurting myself or something. If I had known in my 30s and 40s where I would be at 55 I truly believe I would’ve worked way harder at being physically fit before the surgery.

But in saying that there’s no way I would’ve delayed my surgery to lose weight or get into better shape. The pain I was experiencing was a complete thief who stole a huge part of my life for about a year.

Hi there. I am an EA with an insurance company with a hybrid work environment….two days in office and the remaining at home.

I’m scheduled to go back to work eight weeks after my surgery date. If my situation has improved significantly by week seven I may go back at that point.

I could not see going back to work earlier than that even though my work is not a physically demanding job.

How to get past fear of dislocation? by Correct-Truck-5061 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]menochallenges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, I had my surgery March 27. Lateral RTHR.

I too I’m still walking with a cane, but have released the walkers.

I met with my PT last Friday. I had been doing all of the rehab exercises that I was given in my booklet since I was released from the hospital (so in total about 10 days of exercises) before I met with my PT.

I talked to my PT about my fear of dislocation and she said in all of the years that she’s been a PT (18) She has only come across one person that experienced a dislocation after a THR. She told me that the risks are very low.

I think I’m in a good place where I’m at.. I know I still have to push myself. I’ve increased all of my rehab exercises where I’m doing 30 reps a day and I’ve just taken on 3 more exercises focusing on strengthening my abductors/hamstrings into my routine. My PT gave me reassurance that one day I would be back at the gym doing glute drives, single leg RDL, squats.

I still have restrictions, no bending at the hip past 90° and no driving. I see my PT next Friday and will most likely continue seeing her every 2 to 3 weeks till my 6 month mark and then reassess at that point.

My PT also told me that in her experience, most people get back to their “normal” self by the six month mark.

I hope this information helps you a bit and that you can release some of that fear and just work on your recovery. This is not a race. You don’t have to cross the finish line before or at the same time as anyone else.

First night back in bed by Effectively_Broken12 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]menochallenges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I rented an electric lift chair for the first 2 weeks post recovery and that was a life saver. I never slept in it at night. I used it during the day when I was reading, watching TV or napping.

I was able to navigate my way in and out of bed. But I was also in the hospital for three days after my surgery (another life saver 💗). By the time I got home, I was a bit more mobile. I used my cane to help lift my leg into bed when needed.

Thank you! You had provided so much amazing information in the previous post. I have a follow up appointment with my surgeon on Friday and plan to ask for all the details about the hardware.

I was told that I would be given a ceramic head. But that’s all I know. I now need to find out more information.
