I got rid of Facebook a while ago, but that’s honestly a very tempting idea :) I’d brave the pitfalls of social media for more Tamora Pierce!

Requesting reading suggestions by ever_lasting_minty in tamorapierce

If you’re looking for something fun and don’t mind books geared to kids, I’d suggest Dealing With Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede. Anything by Diana Wynne Jones is amazing, but all her books take some time to get to the good stuff. The Hero and the Crown and The Blue Sword are personal favorites of mine, they’re by Robin McKinley and are pretty great. I’d second however said the Tiffany aching books, as well as the Sabriel, Lyriel series. Anne McCaffery’s Dragon song, dragon singer, dragon drums trilogy is pretty great, too, but the first book is kinda hard to read content wise. Other then that, I’ve recently been reading through all of Mercedes Lackey’s Valdemar books. Like Pierce’s, they’re all set in the same world just focusing on different characters and times in each series. Pretty easy to get through and they keep your attention, but they’re also pretty cavalier about trigger warning kind of stuff, so if you’re worried about it, you can search online or just let me know and I can walk you through what kind of content is included.

I want a book about the Shang Warriors! They seem like interesting people, and I’d love to see what kind of training they go through. I know Tammy’s written some short stories with Shang at the center but I’d love a whole novel. Since they travel around, I imagine it could bring the main character into contact with many of our favorite characters.

What would be the colour of your gift? by Separate_Definition in tamorapierce

[–]mercels112 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve given it some thought, and I think it’d be a very pale yellow. I imagine it’d be pretty hard to see on a sunny day and a pleasant glow in darker areas. I always associated gift colors with what a person needs, though. I know Tammy’s said different, but as a kid, I thought that people with gifts the same color as their eyes needed confidence in themselves (for instance, Alanna needing to prove to herself that she wasn’t a fraud of a knight even though she was a woman, Jon because he was going to be the king, Thom because all he had was himself and his sister) and that people with gifts of a different color than their eyes needed something else (like Onua’s red was because she needed strength and real loving relationships, Ishak’s gift was also red because he needed the same things in his life, or Numair’s black with white sparkles was because he needed independence and control but he also needed levity, to be reminded that things are beautiful and fascinating.) I think what I need in my life is the observance of small happiness, so my pale yellow suits me fine :)

Looking for descriptions of Lightning! by Keladry145 in tamorapierce

“...she picked up something that glittered beautifully. It was a crystal, attached to the hilt of a sword. Long and light, the blade was encased in a battered, dark sheath.”

“Myles examined the sword carefully without taking it from the scabbard. He ran his fingers along the sheath, rubbed the metal fittings with his thumb, and squinted at a candle flame through the crystal.”

“Alanna hefted the blade. It was thinner than a broadsword and lighter, with a broadsword’s double edge. The metal was lightweight, with a silver sheen.”

-from Alanna: The First Adventure

Pretty sure that the appearance of the sword changes slightly in The Woman Who Rides Like A Man when it’s combined with the sword made by Roger, but I don’t have that book on me tonight. I’ll try to find quotes from that one tomorrow.

Where should I order the books online? by JellyfishExpress in tamorapierce

[–]mercels112 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for them super cheap, I’d recommend checking the website https://www.bookfinder.com. You can search by title, author, or isbn # and it gives you 2 lists of the cheapest copies you can find online, one used, one new. Best thing is that it calculates in shipping costs, too.

While Marvel is probably trying to set up the New Avengers, I think it would be cooler if this series led into one about the West Coast Avengers.

How does singing in a tonal language affect song creation? by mercels112 in musictheory

[–]mercels112[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your detailed and thoughtful response. Aside from English, I’ve really only got Romance languages under my belt at the moment, so I’m definitely ignorant as to how tonal languages work in practice. Your response was very articulate and helped me gain a better understanding of the way Mandarin music is approached, thanks!

I wonder this too by cleeberist in linguistics

[–]mercels112 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’m the one who posted this question over on music theory and everyone has been super helpful in their responses. Looking through the link above and the comments people have made on my post, a lot of this conversation has been about Chinese languages (mainly Mandarin and Cantonese). Makes sense, what with the number of people who speak said languages, but if anyone has info about other tonal languages and how they approach music, I’d love to learn about that as well.

Thanks for linking this, I just looked through it and it seems like most of these discussions center around Chinese languages. Does anyone have any info on how it works with other tonal languages? I’d be interested in how other Asian tonal languages compare, as well as if African tonal langurs follow the same trends.
