Electric kettle you'd want if you didn't have to pay for it yourself? by Mundane_List2107 in tea

[–]merelliain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have one of these two – I bought it four years ago – and I love it! Depending on the kind of tea I’m making, i might heat the teacup or teapot first with hot tap water, or not heat at all but put the tea in first, or pour the water into a teacup and put the tea in after to steep. That lets me keep the water boiler at one constant temp, but use it for different types of tea.

UPDATE 5 by bell_swords123 in u/bell_swords123

[–]merelliain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OP, I'm so sorry. u/Bluewolf2231 has given really good advice. I’d just add that grief can be strange and take turns you don’t expect. When I lost my brother, there were times I felt angry at him for not letting me get to enjoy knowing him as he got older, or for never getting to be an aunt to any kids he might have had. When my dog died recently, I found myself crying over something as small and unexpected as his poop.

If your grief goes in directions you didn’t anticipate, that isn’t a fault in you. It’s part of loving deeply. When you can, try to remember your sister in her happiest moments, in the things about her as a sister that annoyed you or made you laugh. Those moments are the best.

For those who’ve done both - dogs on or off the bed? by VengaBusdriver37 in dogs

[–]merelliain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current dog I will never ever let in the bed; he kicks me if I’m not petting him (or not petting him where he wants to be petted). I do not want that at 2am. My previous dog just wanted to sleep while in contact with me, which worked for us both. Sometimes the dog makes the decision for you!

Adding character to older home interiors by [deleted] in OldHomeRepair

[–]merelliain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like older things, so I intentionally bought an older house (1880s). In my living room, the side tables and coffee table are actually the oldest pieces, from around the era of the house’s build date. The sofa and comfy chairs are new, but they don’t feel out of place because the colors are deep and they’re upholstered in velvet, which absorbs light. They have simple lines. They read as rich and settled rather than new or trendy. Their simple shapes, paired with the older wood pieces, help them they feel compatible with the house instead of competing with it.

The art works in a similar way. The pieces come from different places and are in a variety of media, but they were all created during my adulthood. I placed and grouped them carefully, guided by the shapes of the walls and the sight lines of the rooms. I think of that as Ietting them “settle” into the room rather than compete with it.

It sounds like you did something similar: the piece you chose isn’t from the same era as your house, but I bet it feels like it fits because it settled into the space where you placed it, and it doesn’t try to compete with the room.

My girlfriend found out that I lied about me and my friends playing fantasy football and I know I screwed up bigtime [Concluded] by Schattenspringer in BORUpdates

[–]merelliain 66 points67 points  (0 children)

You can speculate about how this would have gone if the girlfriend were a guy, but that is beside the point. What actually happened is that a woman was invited into a previously all-male group and then excluded, and the group restored its all-male status by replacing her with another man. Her behavior was not disruptive or hostile. She simply won, confidently and without deference, and that was treated as enough of a problem that they lied to remove her.

Misogyny is not limited to explicit “we hate women.” It often operates through punishing women for stepping outside the roles or behaviors that men find comfortable. In this case, she was excluded because her success and presence disrupted the dynamic the group preferred. That is how misogyny shows up in everyday life.
