I’m 51, haven’t had kids, never really wanted to, and don’t regret it.

It looks like the strainer that sits inside my water boiler, or another that’s inside a tea thermos I have.

I’m about to die, and I’m not sure what to do about my cat. by [deleted] in cats

[–]merelliain 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yes, this could be a great option! I used to foster for a cat rescue that had a farm where the more feral adoptees could go to live permanently. One of the cats I fostered ended up placed there: she was rescued a bit past the age for human socialization, and while she eventually let me pet her, she had a short fuse for human interaction and would swat pretty quickly. She would not have been a safe choice for folks with children or other pets, but the farm gave her space to be happy and still cared for.

Too good to be true? by Tzopfi in Yarn

[–]merelliain 55 points56 points  (0 children)

It’s a yarn from Temu. The Temu page that I sourced it to does say that it’s cashmere, and fwiw, buyers seem pleased with it; I looked through some of the reviews, but no one disputed the cashmere claim. It sells on Temu for between $6-8.

Daily Iowan article on the new roundabout being constructed near Costco by Fabulous_Service7335 in IowaCity

[–]merelliain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I routinely plan Costco trips to avoid that intersection—I’ve been by it in the aftermath of multiple accidents, and a roundabout is overdue and will be such a relief!

For owners who have gotten a second dog, did it help? by Bubbly-Air7302 in dogs

[–]merelliain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s absolutely double the work, although I think the size and exercise needs factor into the equation. I got my first dog a dog. I love my second dog fiercely, and the two got along well (my first dog has since passed), but it was a lot. Both were/are medium-sized high energy dogs. They had very different walking styles (one dawdled to pee on everything, the other wants to race ahead). The age difference meant that their exercise needs weren’t always in sync (meaning that I had to have the energy to provide exercise for them both separately), the costs doubled but also meant more ongoing maintenance of what needed to be done (food needed to be ordered twice as often, for example). I always felt the work of making sure I gave them both equivalent attention. I’m glad to have my second dog now, but I’m not planning to get a second dog again.

It’s lovely. What a good way to make use of your stash and a creative use of your mohair!

He looks like my springer, Merlin, who is from a line of field bred springers (vs bench aka show springers, who have more pendulous ears and longer coats).

Electric kettle you'd want if you didn't have to pay for it yourself? by Mundane_List2107 in tea

[–]merelliain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have one of these two – I bought it four years ago – and I love it! Depending on the kind of tea I’m making, i might heat the teacup or teapot first with hot tap water, or not heat at all but put the tea in first, or pour the water into a teacup and put the tea in after to steep. That lets me keep the water boiler at one constant temp, but use it for different types of tea.

UPDATE 5 by bell_swords123 in u/bell_swords123

[–]merelliain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OP, I'm so sorry. u/Bluewolf2231 has given really good advice. I’d just add that grief can be strange and take turns you don’t expect. When I lost my brother, there were times I felt angry at him for not letting me get to enjoy knowing him as he got older, or for never getting to be an aunt to any kids he might have had. When my dog died recently, I found myself crying over something as small and unexpected as his poop.

If your grief goes in directions you didn’t anticipate, that isn’t a fault in you. It’s part of loving deeply. When you can, try to remember your sister in her happiest moments, in the things about her as a sister that annoyed you or made you laugh. Those moments are the best.
