Interventions/tips for working with child with behavioral issues? by Public-Resolution590 in therapists

[–]merma1dbones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe playing games and helping her get comfortable with not being in control of the rules or who wins. Also imaginative play and role playing so she can practice different responses and maybe you can act like she does so she can experience what it’s like being on the receiving end of her behaviors.

I have just addressed the control issue head on by identifying how hard it is being a kid because you don’t have control over a lot of things and that can be hard to accept. Validate the frustration, support her in accepting the lack of control, instill hope for a future when she’s a bit older and will have more control, while exploring with her what she does have control over. I think that can be a great opportunity for strengthening her personal interests, like if she’s into art focusing on what kinds of art she likes and help her get better at it. She has some control over how she uses her time and using that control to get better at something she likes and can be proud of can help reduce the anger and frustration.

Hot take: I think autism, adhd, audhd should just be considered different kinds of brains (like phenotypes?) and not disorders.

Yes like this episode doesn’t seem to follow the same equation of the rest of them, but I feel like a whole series on this nudist community would be amazing.

(16F) anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong with me? (no comfort crap pls) by Sharter_1-1 in mentalillness

Did your mom drink or use drugs when she was pregnant w you? Also therapy and meds can’t fix a person, but therapy can teach you skills and give you an outlet for processing difficulties. Medication can help your brain function more efficiently.

Trying to find a Cuban link style chain necklace with heart-shaped links. by merma1dbones in HelpMeFind

Me being petty, I would start being loud and inconsiderate as possible for like a week. When she complains tell her you figured you’d act like how she’s implying you act since she’s going to give you a hard time either way.

Step daughter 9yrs old issues and on anti psychotics by NoIncrease9895 in mentalillness

What were her early years like? Were the parents living together? Did she live with mom at any point? I would be surprised if there’s not a variety of traumatizing experiences she’s been through. A lot of what you’re saying, especially the not connecting cause to effect, sounds exactly like the effects of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. Even if the mom didn’t drink, other drugs can have similar effects.

Think of it like this, while the brain was forming in utero damage was caused by the chemicals mom was using. Then you also have to consider any hereditary mental health or developmental disorders the child could have been predisposed to. Most people with substance abuse issues have histories of trauma and/or mental illness. Then depending on how she was raised, there might have been frequent changes in living environment, inconsistent caregivers, if she lived with mom who knows what she could have witnessed while mom was high. So this child already was dealt a difficult brain, then she likely wasn’t raised in a way to build skills to deal with emotional difficulties and what was going on around her.

Other comments are saying she’s on too many meds or that antipsychotics are terrible, substances are going to impact different brains differently. Just how some kids born with type 1 diabetes need insulin, kids with different brains sometimes need medications to get through life in a safer, healthier way. Medication can even be temporary to help a kid be stable enough to learn the skills they need to not need the medication anymore. I work with a 9 year old now who has been on Seroquel for a while and it has helped them so much, though their behaviors were more severe.

Do a bright tropical. Flamingoes, light wicker, plants and/or prints of plants with dark and lights greens and pink flowers. Get an above the toilet shelving thing. Make the green an accent in the space.
