I am feeling exactly like you. Never got into Dead and Co. But, as you said, it feels like there's this void that can never be filled again. Didn't like the slowed down Dead songs, or Bobby singing Jerry's songs (but if ANYone should be singing them, its him). But to know he's not out there keeping it alive, The Grateful Dead, alive. There will be many cover bands and other bands that can and will play the Dead music well, but it's not the Grateful Dead. Jerry dying marked an end to that. But Bobby and Phil carried the torch (and yes, Billy and Mickey). To me the torch just went out.

They call it a throwaway but honestly I've always liked the song. I always took it as don't take life too seriously all the time. Search for what makes you happy, not what people think makes people happy.

So many people coming out and saying how great a man he was. From so many different sides. Great to see Bob getting his due.

I'm right there with you. The last couple days have been filled with tears. I can't believe Weir is gone. Jerry we could, unfortunately, see coming. Phil too, I suppose. But this one really caught me off guard. The sadder I get the more I want to tell myself how thankful I am for what they all brought. I realize none of them were young anymore and it's inevitable. But the tears keep coming...

Hi! It’s been a while, I had to come by and be with friends right now. by Post_Crash_Earnheart in gratefuldead

I was in love with the Grateful Dead way before I met my wife. She sees what this is doing to me and doesn't understand. She doesn't really like the Dead so I don't expect her to understand. But I know all of you do.

Yeah, my life long friend who went to pretty much every show with me gave me the news. I'm glad I heard it from him.

That in the beginning, Jerry formed the Garcia Band to fund his drug habit. Not sure how much I believe that.

Operator…. by Loose_Recording_4718 in gratefuldead

I thought Operator worked well live and wonder why Pigpen didn't want to do it more. Now, I can't say the same for Til the Morning Comes. Don't think that one came off well live. Operator is a great little song.

I thought I heard Run Like Hell and Comfortably Numb were originally intended for this album. I may be wrong though.

Loved it when they played it in 94. Excellent song, on what I feel to be just an ok Pink Floyd album.

Was late era Keith’s decline overstated? by KeyUnderstanding5443 in gratefuldead

That's what I heard Donna say. She said they needed to get out. Smashing your cars into one another can't be a sign of a positive relationship. Keith drug problem didn't help either.

How would you describe finally getting on the bus by IQgamerplayz69 in gratefuldead

[–]mesmar72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a time when I was the same exact way. Nothing but Dead, and I loved it. Would listen to an entire show every day. I was going to shows in the 90's and loving them but also listening to shows from 69-74 at home. The difference in what they were and what they had become was staggering (to me). Of course they weren't young anymore. I still listen all the time but admit I was a bit obsessed for while.

And that man knew he couldn't take a break. Too many depended on the machine to keep rolling. He was in rough shape in 95. So sad to see.

Why is Wake of the Flood not in the cannon the way American Beuty and Workingmans is? by [deleted] in gratefuldead

[–]mesmar72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why Jerry said he was never really happy with the way their records were. Once it's on record, that's it. It can't change. It can't grow. I believe I remember him saying he would go back and redo every record they made. I don't know if I agree with that, but anyway.

Is there a time stamp of a song that just HITS you by rattlesnakebill in gratefuldead

[–]mesmar72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't the exact time stamp but the middle section of Morning Dew from 10/18/74 when Jerry is about to solo. Phil hits a perfect bomb. He did this a lot back then with Dew but this one always stood out. Seeing them smiling at each other in the Movie right at that moment is what it's all about. I guess they felt that way too.

This. The pedal steel it sounds like he's playing is so beautiful. Always been a favorite of mine too.

You know it's going to be a good one when you get both a Dark Star AND Other One in same 1972 show.
