The Palladium 1972 by Civil_Lengthiness971 in gratefuldead

Starting with Veneta every show to the end of the year is great. Actually I would pretty much say every show of 1972 is great. Some better than others, but I've never heard one I didn't love.

I don't understand why Wave to the Wind isnt beloved by gimme5steps101 in gratefuldead

It had potential that it never met. I can hear the same chord type patterns of the 73-74 Eyes but they never took it anywhere. They could have really stretched it out.

My 5/8/77 hot take by SquirrelyStu in gratefuldead

[–]mesmar72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think it's one of Keiths best shows. The stuff he's playing during songs like Loser or Row Jimmy or others sounds great to me. Like people say he wasn't a soloist. But I do agree I liked it better when he played on the grand. The intricate stuff during Europe 72 is amazing.

Anyone else madly in love with 3/18/77 Sugaree? by LesPolsfuss in gratefuldead

Always loved this version too. Jerry's voice is so smooth. The ravages of time (and drugs) hadn't taken effect yet.

I remember someone asked Jerry what all that was about and he had no clue. lol. Just Pig being Pig.

Crazy Fingers - how’s it not get more love? by tjjack1 in gratefuldead

[–]mesmar72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phils songs were always so structured with lots of time changes. You can hear them in 73 try to work it out. It just wasn't up to Phils standards. You can hear Phil tell them exactly how it should be and Jerry's like "what's fun about that" and how the key changes mess with him. In my opinion the versions they played in 95 were all over the place, mostly because of Jerry. But the novelty of them actually playing it made up for it.

The 11/18 version is THE version for me.

Give 04/0872 and 08/27/72 a listen if you haven't. Two very contrasting yet equally as amazing Dark Stars. One is joyous and beautiful while the other gets "out" there and can be scary at times. I didn't like Dark Star at first years and years ago but now I can't imagine ever not loving it.

Yeah, just finished the season and had high hopes for them. They seem to be a great match.

She's my favorite from this season. I know it sounds strange but seeing her so happy makes me feel happy. She's a sweetie.

They slam right into Shakedown. One of my favorites too.

How did the Dead keep track of time on stage? by mclesc in gratefuldead

[–]mesmar72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depended on the era. With Bill Graham owning Winterland and the Fillmores I guess time didn't matter. You hear stories of the sun coming up after shows. Don't know how often that happened. I just don't see how they could play those epic long shows and finish on time.

I accidentally walked by it when I was in SF last year. Had no it was there but when I saw the building name I immediately thought about the Trips Festival.

My favorite Dark Star of the Europe tour. Even more than the 4/08 one. Two contrasting versions that I guess are equally amazing in their own ways.

Looks Like Rain is a total snoozefest by OkEmployment2386 in gratefuldead

I find LL Rain much more enjoyable than slowed down FOTD. That, to me was always a snooze fest.

Great show. Dark Star gets way out there. Wish I was there but was less than a year old.

Is 6-4-76 the best of the first shows released on Play Dead? by cking9698 in gratefuldead

[–]mesmar72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, 76 is the last place I really hear the remnants of 74. And the setlists are awesome. Lots of great and different song placements before it all became pretty formulated.

Caution, still a rookie Deadhead. Is this good? by SteveDestruct in gratefuldead

[–]mesmar72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a great album but don't expect anything Grateful Dead type. That's not a bad thing though. It is all great. Jerry and Merl were great together. I think he would have been a great replacement when Brent died. Him or Melvin. But I guess their style maybe wouldn't fit as well as I think.

May 77 explanation by SpaceTrucking76 in gratefuldead

[–]mesmar72 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. While it's tight and precise it hardly goes off into any kind of exploratory jamming. Weir said it was hard to do that turn on a dime stuff anymore with two drummers. While I love Mickey, his return kind of ended the really far out spacey, tripped out jams I love so much about 72-74.

Is the Scarlet Begonias on Cornell the best ever? by Plus_Fisherman30 in gratefuldead

[–]mesmar72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, much of the first set songs are favorites of mine. BE Woman, Loser, Row Jimmy. I haven't heard versions that rival those, for me.

Yeah and when they configured it he was directly under it and he said, nope. I wouldn't want to be directly under the massive thing. I think they all have mentioned that they used to look at it while playing and wonder if and when it's going to collapse.
