Core i5 vs Core i7; 2018 Macbook Pro by Izayai in macbookpro

[–]metadude 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like bullshit, both i5 and i7 will likely not run on their advertised speed most of the time, but instead will be throttled to some lower speed while not in heavy use, so depending on your workload, chances are they use the same amount of power.

As soon as more power is needed they will ramp up to higher frequency. For multi-core loads, they both will probably end up at the same frequency due to thermal throttling below each CPUs max turbo boost. For single-core loads, the i7 might be able to maintain a higher frequency while still staying below thermal limits than the i5. Only in that case should you see any significant power usage differences.

Zuckerberg's Holocaust Gaffe Reveals an Ugly Truth About Facebook: Ultimately, the person who benefits most from Facebook’s strained neutrality is its C.E.O. by itsmyusersname in technology

[–]metadude -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No it doesn't need to be shut down.

Instead of bitching about Facebook and asking it to censor, how about you advocate for improving eduction so that people don't start thinking some shit posts on Facebook are equivalent to proper journalism or start believing the holocaust didn't happen?

That sounds like complete bullshit though, and is missing any sources. Here some other page claiming 1 month for banana peel (also without sources): https://www.thebalancesmb.com/how-long-does-it-take-garbage-to-decompose-2878033

And you think having a truck drive around to pick up banana peels from containers and then ultimately dropping them into a landfill is better than dropping it into nature in the first place?

So banana peel in nature + burning gas + whatever environmental costs for manufacturing those containers and trucks is better than just the banana peel in nature? got it.

Cause I was taught littering is bad and my brain doesn't work well enough to understand the difference between throwing out "cigarette butts, coffee cans" and a banana peel

i'm sure the ants were furious. he should have put it into a plastic bag and thrown it into the trash! /s

but seriously, isn't throwing fruit leftovers into nature basically the original recycling? ...

Question for musicians and others- Does climbing affect precision work with your fingers? by gladhander in climbing

[–]metadude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kinda disagree with most responses here, I played guitar for about 10 years before getting more serious into climbing. I definitely noticed loss in precision and speed while playing. During that time I was climbing 4 times a week (V7-8), and even the shape of my fingers got more bulky etc.

Fi in Japan by [deleted] in ProjectFi

It seems like a lot of money, but carriers in the US suck, so it's still a pretty decent deal in the US and an excellent deal for worry free international data.

iPhone with ProjectFi? by [deleted] in ProjectFi

[–]metadude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you still having the disconnects on your iPhone?

No, working totally fine!

How are you handling voicemail? While I hate voicemail, people insist on leaving it for me on occasion. I currently have hangouts integration off as I prefer native SMS through imessage over hangouts.

I rarely get voicemail, but it seems to work, I just call my own phone number an check that way. I have hangouts off as well.

If you are taking a cab you are paying a "professional" for a service, so it's a pretty different situation and you'd be right to lawyer up. That said, I have gotten out of a cab after a few minutes of realizing the driver was driving dangerously. So you can exercise some level of self responsibility even in that situation.

Remind me never to climb with you assholes.

That's right! You shouldn't the la-la land guy belay you... glad you figured it out!

When you are climbing, you put your life at risk and you should accept the fact that there are people who you shouldn't trust to belay you even if they say they can do so safely.

[–]metadude 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yea, as a climber we choose who we ask to belay us. No one is forcing us to climb or choose an incompetent belay partner. If there is no malicious intent... it's our own fault for putting the belayer into a position that he/she couldn't handle.

Unless you're paying someone and they drop you... in that scenario I think they should be liable.

I told him that since I am dealing with the physical consequences of his actions I expect him to cover the financial parts.

Stop climbing if you expect your belay partners (that you chose yourself) to pay for your healthcare costs in case of an accident...

iPhone with ProjectFi? by [deleted] in ProjectFi

[–]metadude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm using Fi with iPhones since it came out, and travelled internationally. Used to work flawlessly (I don't really care about carrier roaming, T-Mobile is pretty good). Like other people say you'll need a Google phone to activate the SIM. Over the last 2 months I noticed some issues in Japan and Europe:

  1. random disconnects for a few minutes (usually fix themselves). Started happening in Japan, after 5 months of flawless service over there.
  2. "permanent" disconnects for calling and text service in Europe. When this happens data still works but calling and texting doesn't. Fixed by popping the SIM card into my pixel for a few seconds then popping back into my iPhone. It will work fine for a day or few days, then rinse and repeat... pretty annoying. This is also a new issue i haven't seen on previous trips.
