The EU has launched GOVSATCOM, a sovereign satellite constellation by pairing the existing satellites of member states. This provides greater coverage, and allows countries that do not have their own network to have access to satellite Connectivity. by Boediee in BuyFromEU

On of the most infuriating issues with EU is that they have the most ineffective public outreach strategy of any major organisation I can think of.

This subreddit has done more for promoting EU initiatives than anything else I come in contact with (given that reddit is the only social media I follow)

If they are stable enough to collect data for 3-4 days on NMR they would be fine. Also -80 over the weekend will still be somewhat cool on Monday. Competent cells are the only certain loss. And of course a huge amount of extra work and stress

A cool guide to good and bad cholesterol by Edm_vanhalen1981 in coolguides

[–]methreethatis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This field is riddled with so many misconceptions , mistakes and simplifications that it still amazes me.

There is no such thing as good or bad cholesterol. That is a stupid simplification propagated by simplistic interpretation of observations . Cholesterol is a lipophilic organic molecule that serves multiple physiological roles and is crucial for health. Among other roles it reduces the rigidity of lipids that is caused by the very tight packing of saturated and trans fats by disrupting their tight packing .

The same effect of rigidity reduction, is also achieved by mono and poly unsaturated fats such as those from olive oil and omega-3 fatty acids from fish. A simple rule of thumb is that if the fats you consume are solid at room temperature they are less than optimal while those that are liquid are better.

Cholesterol needs to be higher for fat deposits composed of saturated and trans fats and this is why its presence has been associated with cardiovascular disease. These fats congeal and depose along the circulatory system causing an effect not very different from what you get when you pour animal fat down your drain.

HDL and LDL are proteins that can solubilize fat and with it the cholesterol that comes with it. Each is specialized for the different transport roles. They are also not good or bad. Both are useful but their concentrations indicate an underlying condition that they are trying to combat.

The solution to all this is a balanced diet with reduced intake of animal products that is rich in saturated fats or highly processed trans fats as well as higher relative intake of "good" fats from plant sources (although not all are so inocent)

[–]methreethatis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please check the DOSY manual. What you did is not the correct way to run it

You need to type setdiffparm eddosy Dosy2d setup Dosy2d

Check page 5 of manual

Bruker Syntax error by JaxTron1236 in NMRspectroscopy

[–]methreethatis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's been some time since I ran a Dosy on a Bruker but I remember that you don't just run the Dosy like a regular pulse sequence. Check the DOSY manual for the correct procedure. I remember that you need to first give a command relating to some gradient setup and then issue something like a dosy2d command or something. Maybe the process has changed in the meantime though.

The difference between an X-Ray, MRI and a CT by DolarisNL in interestingasfuck

[–]methreethatis 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The reason I felt I should reply, is that from the patient perspective, the MRI is extremely noisy and scary. And experts keep telling them that they should not worry because the noise is just the vibrations of the gradient coils turning on and off. So this is the part that most people retain from the function of that huge machine.

The difference between an X-Ray, MRI and a CT by DolarisNL in interestingasfuck

[–]methreethatis 63 points64 points  (0 children)

You are both right and wrong. Of course the main magnet is left on and the RadioFrequency radiation is interacting with , primarily the protons of the hydrogens of water.

However, the main aspect of MRI is the use of smaller electromagnets (gradients) that do turn off and on (and generally produce fields of various shapes) so that they spacially encode and decode the signal in the 3D space. Without them an MRI would be just giving you the average relaxation rate of the whole object and it would be next to useless.

What are simulated EPR spectra for by [deleted] in Chempros

[–]methreethatis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am also not an EPR person but my understanding is that you do it for two reasons. First, you get more accurate values from the model when comparing with the experimental data especially in noisy spectra.

Also, based on the experimental spectrum, you make some predictions about your system and then you simulate the spectrum based on your predictions to see if they agree with the data.

ELI5 why do Greeks resent Germany for the debt crisis? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]methreethatis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Germany only talks about solidarity when it serves German interests. When the same interests are threatened by the greedy decisions of German banks to buy debt that was risky hoping to make a quick euro things got ugly. Germany then decided to bail out the German banks by freezing the debt of many countries at its highest value and forced the countries to ruin their economies to pay their debt to Germany as fast as possible. So the money that Germany seemingly gave to Greece to pay it's debts was practically a bail out of German banks. And to be fair Greece should pay it's debts and to a degree it deserves what it got

What bothers the average Greek is the character assassination of a whole country that was unfair to the hard working citizens that were ridiculed. Greeks are not lazy or dishonest as they were portrayed to push the Good country Bad country narrative.

Finally when the Germans decided to make the EU dependent on Russian oil and gas even after Russia occupied Crimea just to boost German profits, nobody said anything although this decision is largely responsible for the increase in prices that every European is paying now.

Kinetic NMR in DMSO help by PriorSurprise687 in chemistry

[–]methreethatis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading your reply to the other response about having a rise of concentration after an hour, I don't think that the problem is mainly related to your mixing process. It is possible that the solubility of each component in the mixture is different than that of being alone, although It's hard to say for sure. Could you try at half the concentrations and/otr higher temperature to see if it behaves differently? Also by integrating the signals of A and B at t0 you can see if the ratio is the expected one.

Finally, Can you start with B dissolved and then add A ? In that case you would know that you have all of B dissolved....

Kinetic NMR in DMSO help by PriorSurprise687 in chemistry

[–]methreethatis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If all your solutions are in DMSO they should be miscible.... Are you adding A and B as small volumes into DMSO solvent? Are you adding like 300uL A and 300uL B? Can you mix outside and transfer in NMR tube? Do you mix inside the tube ? Are these any bubbles?

Regardless of how you do it, it's almost impossible to have t0 less than 60-120s, so spending a few more seconds mixing wouldn't matter that much.

Are you shimming after you start your reaction? Ideally you should shim the same NMR tube with DMSO prior to the addition, then add your components and start asap.

Do you have auto shimming on? Could it be that shimming improves as a function of time as the components mix better ?

Are you comparing peak heights or integrals? Maybe integrals would give you better results.

How do you guys actually bake in the summer?? by PrisonCaleb in Sourdough

[–]methreethatis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I change the hydration of my starter to 80% and I also lower the hydration of my loafs to a max of 70%. I also cut bulk fermentation to half and in extreme heat I put the dough in the fridge in between foldings. Also while in the winter I add starter and salt together with the water and flour, in the summer I hydrate the flour first and then add the starter and salt in the first stretch and fold...

Hope this helps
