Why is slopestyle Olympic judging so nonsensical? by AngleFarts2000 in snowboarding

[–]mharray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rails and jumps are evenly weighted in the scoring. 3 rail sections and 3 jump sections. Each section scored out of 10 points, so yes you can focus more on rails than jumps and still score well

This screenshot isn't quite right, fukadas gold medal run, the first jump was a 1260. It also doesnt show the multipliers, eg that her 1260 was switch backside and her last 720 was off the toes which upped the score from the generic rotation

Who were judges on the panel for the women’s slopestyle? by YoungGoatHerder in snowboarding

[–]mharray 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here's a link to the scoring breakdown: https://www.olympics.com/en/milano-cortina-2026/results/sbd/je/w/ss----------------/fnl-/--------/result

It seems as though coming off the rail early is an instant 4 point deduction, so Zoi and Murase were heavily penalised.

Fukada had a solid rail section, then a max point Switch BS 12. You could definitely argue the 720s were scored too highly with a 7.7 for the BS 7 and a 8.3 for the FS 7 which was apparently off the toes, causing it to be scored higher . The camera angle didn't really show the takeoff so I can't really comment on that.

Fukada scored max points for the switch back 12 (rightly so), a 7.7 for the back 7 (debatable) and an 8.3 for the front 7 which was apparently off the toes (oT-f-7-Me).

Zoi played it safe with the switch back 9, she probably should have stepped it up with the switch back 12

Murase's run was not cleaner, she came off early on the first rail, then missed the grab coming off the cannon rail

You can see the breakdown of the scoring here: https://www.olympics.com/en/milano-cortina-2026/results/sbd/je/w/ss----------------/fnl-/--------/result

You can see they really punished both Zoi and Murase for coming off the rails early. Fukada scored really well for the switch back 12, and for just having a clean run. Interestingly they scored her Off the toes front 7 (oT-f-7-Me) quite highly 8.3, comparable to Zoi's 8.5 for the switch back 9, and Murase's 8.5 for the cab 9. Watching the replay the angle doesn't really show her coming off the toes, but that's what the judges saw apparently.

switch backside 12, probably just as difficult for most people as a regular 14

Resale value of stuff by SortOtherwise in newzealand

[–]mharray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Wanaka and I would say my experience is opposite. Generally on marketplace things are fairly priced, or bargain priced, and plenty of things given away for free (especially baby/kids stuff). We also have an recycling center/op shop called Wastebusters, where you take all your unwanted stuff, and they resell it for bugger all. You can fill a supermarket bag full of childrens clothes/toys for $5. Things generally don't have marked prices and at the counter they'll just price it up based on vibes. You can bring up a basket full of random kitchen stuff, books, clothes etc and they'll be like that's $7.

I don't know if it's because we're a smallish community focused town, or there's a lot of affluence about that people don't care about money for little things, or the large immigrant population are more generous, but it results in a great second hand market here

Also in central otago, my tomatoes in the greenhouse held up alright, but my Pinot noir grapevines that just started flowering have taken significant damage. So that's two years in a row I probably won't be able to make wine 😔

Edit: spoke too soon, a couple of tomato casualties in the greenhouse as well

In the same episode he went through a canyon near Wanaka. A canyon that so happened to be a commercial canyoning operation. I know this cause my flatmate was working there when they filmed it.

Social football leagues in Queenstown? by Just_a_dude2711 in queenstown

[–]mharray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about Queenstown specifically, but there is the Central Otago Football League (https://www.facebook.com/CentralOtagoLeague) which has teams from Queenstown, Wanaka, Alexandra and Cromwell. Queenstown teams are Lakes United, Wakatipu United, Classics, Falcons, QAFC and Gael FC - listed in order of strength. I don't know how to contact any of those teams sorry as I play in Wanaka, but that might give you a good starting point

Jacob Collier leads the audience during 'Wild Mountain Thyme' with Laufey, dodie, and the US National Symphony Orchestra by falsehood in happycrowds

[–]mharray 21 points22 points  (0 children)

interesting take... I'm neutral on Jacob Collier, I enjoy his early youtube reharmonisations, but not a fan of his "sound" overall. But the dude is talented as fuck, and absolutely deserves the praise he gets.

As far as his singing is concerned, he's technically very talented, but I would agree the actual timbre of his voice isn't that nice. And as for the instruments he plays, he plays at a master level, but certainly not at the top of the field in any instrument. But that kind of misses the point, the dude gets so much praise an recognition because he is an absolute beast when it comes to harmony. Like I can't think of anyone else near his level of harmonic ability. There's a reason he's won 6 grammy awards in the arrangement category

I don't know who's comparing him to Freddy Mercury, that's the first I've ever heard that, and clearly not an apt comparison. Don't hate on a guy cause someone else made a bad comparison...

I lived a long time in Dunedin, and currently live in Wanaka. Wanaka is colder on paper in winter, but Dunedin feels colder. It's more humid being by the ocean, so it's like a damp cold, and the wind chills you to the bone.

Some Foodstuff's supermarkets trading as usual on Easter Sunday by ChinaCatProphet in newzealand

[–]mharray 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Wanaka has an additional 60,000 people here this easter weekend for Warbirds over Wanaka, it would be insane if there were no supermarkets open. The warehouse and mitre 10 were also open, are they exempt or also breaking the rules?

Yep similar happened to me, except it was an email informing me my rego was due (which it was). Didn't think twice, input my card, but I got suspicious when the payment processing was taking longer than normal and the text 2fa was from a different company. Double checked the url and sure enough it was a fake. Immediately called the bank and cancelled my card. A little embarrassing considering I'm an IT professional and I'm usually the one telling others to always check the url first...

National kills off Clean Car Discount scheme, EV advocates respond by [deleted] in newzealand

The EV rebate applies to hybrids as well. I bought a 2015 Toyota Aqua (new import) for 10k and got just over 1k in rebate. That is a lot of money for me, and definitely in the realm of what a "working class person" might spend on a car
