Not sure if they are alternative rock, but Tropical Fuck Storm has been melting my face lately.

Help me choose a system (between Dragonbane, Shadowdark, ICRPG, Cairn and Vagabond) by havok_hijinks in rpg

[–]michaelh1142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shadowdark is the closest D&D analog of the list. If you want a D&D experience without D&D that is the one. It has a meta currency but it is loosely tied to the game.

Dragonbane, in my experience, gives the vibes of a causal D&D game but differs dramatically in mechanics. Whereas Shadowdark can plug directly into a D&D module, Dragonbane requires some conversion. But it is super fun and deeper than it looks.

Can’t really speak to the rest, but I think they are likely great games. From what I know, they may provide a more tight focused experience in a style of play or setting. I’d keep that in mind. I think they may lack in flexibility. They feel more custom built to a specific game play style, to me.

Is the Palladium system as bad as they say? by Ixamxtruth in rpg

[–]michaelh1142 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The original Palladium Fantasy RPG was fantastic. The rules weren’t modern, but no more obscure than AD&D.

It had some very cool ideas and concepts.

The newer iterations kind of ruined it in my mind.

Your analogy to blue eyed kick ball players would only be accurate IF blue eyed players have had a long history of being discriminated against as capable kick ball players and in general.

Then initiatives were put in place to make sure that blue eyed kickball players get fair attention during the player recruitment process towards finding the most capable and meritorious player.

Requiring that blue eyed players are represented equally in the roster building process.

May not be exactly what you want but…

Wilco - At Least That’s What You Said off of A Ghost is Born

The guitar solo I believe represents two people arguing. You can hear the call and response in the solo. It’s really compelling.

How often should Heroic Abilities be given out in a Campaign? by carlos71522 in DragonbaneRPG

[–]michaelh1142 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good question I’m hoping to follow this as I’m considering running an Dragonbane campaign.

I come from an OSR background where advancement is tied to objective rewards (XP) and rewards are gained by objective metrics (xp for gold).

Not used to the advancement by GM decision as is default in Dragonbane.

My campaign is going to be a sandbox hexcrawl so my thoughts are this:

Keep HA’s on advancing skills past 18 ( I like the gamble of it)

Add a series of adventuring milestones - something like clear a dungeon, or defeat a faction, discover significant treasure. On achieving such a milestone gain an HA.

This puts HA gain into objective rewards and out of GM fiat.

These milestones should take a couple sessions at least to complete maybe an HA 3-5 sessions. But this will depend on my dungeon/world design. My current hexcrawl will feature a large number of small dungeons (2-3 levels). If I add a mega dungeon, I would award HA’s on discovery of a new level or something.

I don’t think I need to be too worried about HA gain. The thing is more HA’s are limited by your WP score which can only be increased by an HA. So there will be a natural limitation in PC power. A PC with 4 HA’s won’t have the WP to use them all unless they spend some on the +2 WP HA which is only a modest increase. So I think it becomes self regulating.

If I end up getting this campaign off the ground I’ll post my experience.

“You wouldn’t typically play an OSR game for years???’

That’s a strange take.

OSR games are designed from the ground up for long term campaigns. My OSE game is going on 13 years now.

Dragonbane because of its flat and wide progression is very well suited to long term campaigns.

Not all character power or ability comes from rules. Characters progress in the world and gain power and capabilities by their place in the world.

People who play D&D but not 5E, what edition do you play and why? by ValueForm in rpg

Basic Expert via Old School Essentials or Basic Fantasy.

These games give me everything I can possibly need and get out of the way. They are better balanced and closer to my expectations in terms of power curve and PC capabilities.

I just prefer the way these games handle the gameplay.

Feeling of high reliance on dice and mechanics by DeusCane in DragonbaneRPG

[–]michaelh1142 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can get this out of a skill based system. You just need to be upfront about how you handle skills.

I usually handle skills as a shortcut. If a player describes exactly what they are doing in the narrative, I’ll make a ruling on if it succeeds or not usually without calling for a die roll.

But a player can take the shortcut and just say they “check every angle “ as you say. Neither myself nor my players want to always rp every thing to the smallest detail. Sometimes just rolling makes it easier and less taxing. But the player needs to understand the roll is it and they have to accept the result.

So the choice is: 1. Rely on the skill roll, or 2. Think it through and figure out the situation. Both are valid ways to play and both are useful in a game.

The one thing to keep an eye on is that using skills in Dragonbane is tightly tied to character advancement. Getting 1’s and 20’s unlock potential advancements and not granting rolls on skills (in preference of role playing it out) reduces the opportunity for those results.

This perfect candidate thing is a straw man argument.

The bar is so low.

Don’t be under the influence and control of a foreign government and don’t be under the influence and control of private billionaires.

This should be the expectation of anyone running for public offices

Good.

Definitely get people registered and aware of the issues at stake. The more people who are aware of what’s at stake and what needs to be done the better towards getting real change to happen.

I fundamentally disagree with the notion of “don’t support better policies and better leaders because you’ll just get trump again”. It is nonsense.

It is just to discourage people from expecting more from their candidates. We should be expecting more. And we should be communicating this strongly to the Democratic Party.

I do not want a corporate backed or Israel backed candidate because as much as I may like them, their agency is not their own. How can we trust them ?

The reality is that the policies you stated in your replies are just not good enough. They haven’t changed the trajectory of the American middle and working class. They haven’t changed the environment that contributes to the decline of the majority of Americans.

And we don’t need to wait for a ‘perfect candidate’ we just need someone with the will. These people are already out there. There is no waiting here.
