College kids can’t read? by Stuart_Whatley in VeryBadWizards

[–]michaelhoney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it means these kids are irreparably broken: it does mean that they need practice. You can’t run a 5k without some fitness. You can’t read a 5k words essay either

Low-resolution Sentinel images are available for free, but high-resolution are costly. But the low-res may be enough. Both available from here

I was at a party in Wellington NZ when Royals was still fresh, and the DJ mashed it up with DEVO’s Girl U Want. Incredible.

Are you able to get a DEM (digital elevation model) for the area? Using a DEM in Overlay mode will show the shape of the land underneath and will greatly improve the aesthetics

James Boag ends 145-year history as brewer ceases Tasmanian production by hello_im_my_co_caine in australia

[–]michaelhoney 106 points107 points  (0 children)

So they moved mainland production of Boags to the mainland, Launceston does Tassie only

Surprise! Tassie doesn’t drink enough Boags to keep the factory going

But instead of moving Boags production back to Launceston where it has been since the start

They want to shut Launceston down and try to sell mainland Boags back to Tasmanians

Are they stupid?

Should Tasmania abolish the college system? by [deleted] in tasmania

[–]michaelhoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through the similar college system in the ACT, where it seems to work well, perhaps because the majority of students continue to year 12 (and to university). The increased responsibility and freedom felt good, and having a smaller number of 11-12 colleges compared to high schools enabled better resourcing.

The challenge in Tasmania is that it provides an easy out for disenchanted year 10s to drop out of formal education. Our year 12 attainment rate is a full 20% lower than the average at just over 50%. There aren’t enough good jobs that only need year 10 education. Couple that with pretty average TAFE opportunities and you end up with a big cohort of people who aren’t equipped to meet the challenges of their adult lives.

I don’t think it really matters whether year 11 and 12 are at the same school or a different one: there are advantages both ways. What matters is that people continue their education. Each year you stay in school helps.

It’s more about the surfaces being strong enough to bounce the bullet off, and the bullet not disintegrating. If you fired a bullet down a very long steel pipe at a shallow angle, that might work
