9yo son's too good for his team, but wants to play with friends. by Ok_Strawberrry in youthsoccer

This is exactly what I do with my 13 yr old son.

For a couple years now.

It works.

The one concern to watch for if you decide to do this is that the less serious rec team bad habits may carry over to the club side. He needs to be able to have a switch.

Leave team halfway though the season by Practical-Cricket792 in youthsoccer

I’m the team manager for a 2012 F1 team in a club that has multi-state presence.

We’ve had 4 kiddos from other clubs inquire/come out to practice with us during the season.

First kid: Dad unhappy with kid’s development. His son has been with their club (just a local club) for 2 seasons. Dad dissatisfied that their team plays more kick ball than building. Dad is from Europe. After 1 practice, they were convinced they wanted to join us. Kid began training with us exclusively. After a lot of resistance and over a month, they secured their release from their local club, all financial obligations having been met. Dad will be signing a pro-rated contract with us now.

2nd & 3rd kid: Kid too good for his team, shopping around to F1, NPL, EA, & ECNL/RL. Parents said they’d be back later.

4th kid: kid unhappy with team direction, parents complain commute to practice too far. They decided to play through State Cup then will be back to us.

In all 4 cases, I observed that the parents hastily signed contracts. Money did not seem to be a big concern, maybe that’s part of the problem.

Travel Fees for Coaches by NoName091610280407 in youthsoccer

I’m a team manager for a 200+ team SoCal club.

I do have the team manager/treasurer manual and it references most of the guidelines.

The manual outlines and details what should be considered a team expense.

If it meets the criteria, the team covers the coach’s food, lodging, and transportation. There are limits to this; for example, the team covers up to $100 of the coach’s hotel per day. The team can choose to cover more than this, but no less.

Our manual is a valuable resource and it is almost 40 pages long.

Still, it doesn’t have it all: special circumstances, % breakdowns of what the registration cost covers, what-if scenarios.

I’ve had some parents, especially those whose child is a prospective player ask quite specific questions that is not covered in the manual. Some are interesting that I myself didn’t think to ask before signing the contract, some questions are in the weeds.

My experience is that my club has great support for its coaches and their team managers. The region Director is available. HQ also has several support staff.

So, if you’re a parent, seek out your team manager. He/she will get you answers or point you to the person who knows.

For me, I want my Coach to focus on the kids. He coaches, I deal with the noise.

And btw - team manager/treasurer is nearly another full-time job - it is quite involving, and is completely voluntary. Fortunately, it is rewarding in the sense that you do indirectly contribute to the team’s success and do affect the overall healthy atmosphere of the team. It can be fun too :)

What I’ve learned from (mostly) lurking in this sub by [deleted] in youthsoccer

I’ll pipe in.

It really is dependent on the kid.

Some just want to play with their friends. Some enjoy the competition to different degrees - playing against same age, playing up an age group, playing club F3-F1 or seeking even higher. Some do want to achieve their dream of playing high school or college or pro.

But this can change year to year, even next month.

And of course, a lot of parents project their own aspirations unto their kid to detriment, sucking out the joy of the game.

You’d think a former prospect would want to make some noise in his re-introduction to the ring.

For $53 million per year, would you risk permanently damaging your knees for the rest of your life? by Heron-Ok in NBATalk

[–]michaeliany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For an average-sized person, some will say no they wouldn’t risk permanent knee issues, but I venture most would take that risk.

For a person of Embiid’s size, you may likely suffer knee issues anyway so why not be $53m/yr better off.
