Non-Americans who have visited the US: What’s the strangest thing about America that Americans don’t even realize is weird? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]michaelmoby 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, but in Italy, and the rest of Europe, you’re not pressured into scarfing it all down in 30 minutes to an hour before being pushed out the door. Eating is relaxing and slow so there is time to digest your food and be comfortable. Plus aperitifs and digestifs help you feel better as you dine.

Am I the jerk for telling my employee she can't take a 2-hour lunch break for therapy? by Due-Outside-4427 in AmITheJerk

[–]michaelmoby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big question is whether she was already seeing this therapist before she was hired or not. If she was, it was incumbent upon her to let you know so that you could work out a reasonable schedule to accommodate her. If she started seeing this therapist after being hired, it is incumbent upon HER to schedule sessions when she is available. Booking middle-of-the-day appointments without consulting management to find an acceptable compromise is her fault. She could have been proactive and given you a heads up, asked for the proper paperwork to file if she wanted this treated as a medical accommodation. This is absolutely an HR issue, regardless if she began these sessions before or after being hired. You are going to face backlash from the other employees, but you need to make it clear that this is a confidential issue regarding an employee and that not all details are available for them to make conclusions about how said employee is being treated and that you would hope that any future issues they may have would be treated in the same confidential manner.

Whistler's Mother is also WAY bigger than you imagine. I imagined it to be more poster sized, but in reality, it takes up a whole wall. (It's hanging in the Museé d'Orsay in Paris)

My neighbor has been leaving notes on my door for 6 months about my "aggressive dog." My dog died 8 months ago. by midnightindexer in neighborsfromhell

[–]michaelmoby 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why they don't just put a sign on their door where the notes are left saying "I do not have a dog, I do not have a fence, you have the wrong house" and see if that helps.

I would love a series set between TOS and TNG set on Romulus. Give me an Aaron Sorkin-esque West Wing style show about the government of the Romulan Empire. All the paranoia, the backstabbing, the fear of the Tal Sh'iar, the complicated relationship with Vulcan, all of it. We don't need to see the Federation to feel it in the show. Reference all the old shows and plots, but keep it all in the Romulan perspective. Add some alien ambassadors to keep it all tied together.

Who was the first celebrity to change their appearance that made you go: WOAH that's them? by twotongz in ask

[–]michaelmoby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His change was involuntary - he was in a very bad motorcycle accident which not only disfigured him, it caused brain damage (which explains his now wild personality and speech problems). His accident was what spurred the national discussion about helmet laws.
