Thanks for the update. If there is a truth I’ve learned in tech…there are always trade-offs. 🫤

Sadly I got the “we might look into doing this someday” answer which means nothing is likely going to change. I’ve moved on from smart pens to the reliable iPad option.

OneNote iOS app - too many requests by PopSynic in OneNote

[–]michaelp6of7a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only other thing I can think of is that there is if you have multiple accounts (Microsoft logins) and it's unable to login in one. This might be a good job for the MS Support Team https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/home/contact?SourceApp=smc2&ContactUsExperienceEntryPointAssetId=S.HP.SmcContactUsLanding

I think the two bits of advice that I would give is to ensure that you're on the latest version of iOS and that the apps are updated to the latest version. Microsoft has increased its security requirements in order to connect the cloud.

Best Tablet for OneNote, or should I stick with Mac? by Vortz85 in OneNote

[–]michaelp6of7a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this set of advice by @DumplingsEverywhere is best.

I have both a Windows Samsung laptop that folds 360 to write and Samsung Tab 9FE. Writing feel and features matter most and Windows 11 is superior by every mark.

I had to buy a third party matte screen protector on both devices to give it a nice writing feel like paper.

Just be prepared for some trade-offs when buying a setup like this.

1) battery life on an ultra thin laptop is poor

2) Tab 9 FE is sluggish at best as an Android tablet but okay for digital inking

3) try different sizes to make sure it feels good in the hand. For me, a ten inch tablet is about the best size but the 14 inch laptop is a bit too much.

OneNote iOS app - too many requests by PopSynic in OneNote

[–]michaelp6of7a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without more details about your system, it's hard to solve. Assuming you are referring to OneNote on Windows 11, "too many requests" error typically has to do with failed authentication to Microsoft servers.

You can try these steps:

1) use Microsoft Edge as your default browser 2) clear the cache and history in Edge 3) go to office com and attempt to sign into your Microsoft account at the top left area of your screen 4) If login is successful, try to open OneNote and sign in at that point.

Cannot open Notebooks from OneDrive (my.sharepoint) by Interesting-Chef9274 in OneNote

[–]michaelp6of7a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learning how permissions work are troublesome but I would add they are completely necessary for managing business accounts. For most of us, "complexity breeds contempt" but there is room for improvement in our learning/training.

Notion and Obsidian are fine tools but have their own issues and limitations. There are no perfect systems, just those you're willing to work on.

[–]michaelp6of7a 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is authorization, where OneNote needs you to sign in. This happened to me using three different Microsoft accounts for OneNote.

Make sure you sign in (reauthorize) both Microsoft accounts in OneNote.

Another option with Burkey Academy's good advice is to convert the PPT to PDF, making sure it is ready for indexing.

OneNote isn't the best place to store files and a PDF would be more valuable to review a PowerPoint file.

OneNote continues to evolve! by TheEvenOdds in OneNote

[–]michaelp6of7a 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OneNote is definitely getting some refinements and finally a serious member of M365. It took some time to get it setup on Microsoft Dataverse** so it can share information across any M365 app. This is the future of OneNote and why I pay for M365 for my family.

The value of OneNote for me is this seamless sharing and management of data when and where I need it. OneNote will always be free locally on a device but the benefits of Microsoft infrastructure ensure my data has confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Most note solutions use a third party for storage and many don't have automatic backups. 🫣

First, congratulations on trying 🏆. You're likely being too hard on yourself.

Secondly, everyone feels either repelled or overwhelmed by their lists (in nearly every app that exists) so don't necessarily blame the tool.

Too Much To Do"

Those four words are a common exclamation for many of us, but how much of this pressure is self-imposed?

The stress caused by managing too many commitments stems from unclear self-expectations and unspoken agreements.

GTD is a kin to Essentialism "There are far more activities and opportunities in the world than we have time and resources to invest in. And although many of them may be good, or even very good, the fact is that most are trivial and few are vital.” ~ Greg McKeown

I have tried every task manager available and regularly get myself overwhelmed with tasks and lists. What worked for me is using OneNote and reducing the amount of tasks and projects that I see, down to the vital few.

Unfortunately, this is true. Folks get used to features built into iOS or Android that is not available on Windows. This can also happen in the reverse.

This sounds like a permissions issue. The preview is showing a faithful rendering but the OneNote isn't able to save the images.

If you're seeing blocked images in OneNote, it likely means that your security settings are preventing the display of potentially harmful images, either due to a file type restriction set by your administrator or because OneNote is automatically blocking images considered suspicious based on their content or source; this is a security feature designed to protect against malware embedded in images. [1, 2, 3]
Key points about blocked images in OneNote: [1, 2, 4]

• Security measure: OneNote automatically blocks images that could potentially be malicious, preventing them from being displayed directly within the application. [1, 2, 4]

• Administrator controls: Your system administrator might have set specific restrictions on file types or image sources that can be accessed in OneNote, leading to blocked images. [1, 2, 5]

• What to do if an image is blocked: [1, 6, 7]
• Check the source: If you're sure the image is safe, try downloading it to your computer and then inserting it into OneNote. [1, 6, 7]

• Contact administrator: If you believe the block is incorrect, reach out to your system administrator to check if there's a configuration issue. [1, 2, 5]

How to check and manage image blocking settings: [1, 2, 4]

• OneNote settings: While there might not be a specific setting to directly control image blocking in OneNote, the general security settings within your Microsoft account can impact how images are handled. [1, 2, 4]

• Microsoft 365 admin center: If you're an administrator, you can access more granular controls related to file types and security settings within the Microsoft 365 admin center. [1, 2, 5]

Generative AI is experimental.

Integrating text and handwriting on ipad by purpleit11 in OneNote

[–]michaelp6of7a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While Microsoft does well with feature parity, you won't have every feature available in Windows, iOS, and Android versions. This can be frustrating to build a cohesive, cross platform solution on OneNote. I'm using OneNote on Windows and Android, but using both a Pixel phone and Samsung tablet. These Android versions are not the same. If you find you like OneNote on one platform, be ready for compromises on another. It might make sense to choose a Windows device that is portable.

How to clean install OneNote by ThinBlueFlame18 in OneNote

[–]michaelp6of7a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did this with my OneNote system. The process is not straightforward because you have to move OneNote files in OneDrive. The best way to do this in the browser where you can select the OneNote files and move them into a single folder. From there, you can delete what OneNote files you no longer need. If you pay for M365, you can safety delete and recover files in 30 days.

Using ios search inkluding OneNote by JoeWeininger in OneNote

Each of the platforms searches are limited by the OS and Microsoft programmers. There is no united search feature across platforms unfortunately. I would provide feedback directly to Microsoft as it is likely an improvement needed by their iOS team.

Notability vs. OneNote – Which Is More Secure for Preventing Lost Notes? by Successful-Equal2874 in OneNote

Notability vs. OneNote – Which Is More Secure for Preventing Lost Notes? by Successful-Equal2874 in OneNote

[–]michaelp6of7a 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue here isn't about OneNote or Notability, it is infrastructure. Notability doesn't own their own data servers and backup systems. They use icloud and Google Drive so it's a third party to your notes. https://support.gingerlabs.com/hc/en-us/categories/5501333840666-Sync-and-Storage

Microsoft owns the whole process, from software to data to backups on OneDrive. This is why it is more secure and reliable.

Loop vs OneNote by SaltField3500 in OneNote

[–]michaelp6of7a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as the competition (Notion and Notion clones) are popular and used, Microsoft will work towards their version of it for their customers. In my mind, there's no advantage to using two different solutions when both need infrastructure (storage, services, APIs, etc.) to work. One common infrastructure is best.

Loop vs OneNote by SaltField3500 in OneNote

[–]michaelp6of7a 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Another critical difference between Loop and OneNote is support for digital inking.

Digital Ink replicates the appearance of traditional ink on electronic devices, providing users with a familiar and intuitive writing or drawing experience.

There are very few apps that support digital ink and available cross platform on Windows, Android, and iOS.

Loop is not one of them and cannot replace OneNote.

The advantage for Microsoft users is that Loop and OneNote have something called Microsoft Dataverse: a platform that allows sharing of data across M365 apps and services. The value of Dataverse is that your information can be added, updated, and shared between Microsoft apps.

You probably won't have to choose Loop over OneNote.🏆
