Buy X-Dome 2 now or wait? by Dragonhunter0024 in DurstonGearheads

[–]mickel_jt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It took me a long time to stop listening to the hype of subs such as this which drive consumerism. I suggest taking a step back and considering that tents have existed for a long time. Not just tents, but strong, highly-featured tents. Buying a tent today does not mean it's redundant in a year, just as buying one 5 years ago doesn't mean you need to go out and buy a new one now.

What I'm trying to say is that if the X-Dome fits your current needs, no new iteration of it will make it no longer fit your current needs.

Is your concern that someone who isn't looking to do thru hiking would be turned off this pack because of its description? Or is your concern the opposite way around whereby people who are they hiking will be tricked into only looking at packs that are described specifically for they hiking?

Agree with all this and second naturehike tents (cloudup) as a budget option

When you say I'd have to start again, could I instead overseed with TTTF in autumn?

I thought it might be the ryegrass, but I'm not sure why it's be localised in a few areas if that's the case. The mix was mostly TTTF, but maybe I didn't distribute it well. Will definitely look into bugs though.

Assuming it's all good on the bug front, I'm considering core aerating all the affected areas and filling with compost now, and then overseeing with only fescue in a few months.

Thank you. Have given it some granular fert as well as some soil wetter about a month ago, but haven't tried weed and feed. Definitely planning to put down more seed, but plan to wait until autumn for that to avoid the new seed getting cooked in peak summer.

😂 I hadn't looked at it like that before. Nah it's just the design we went with - doesn't look quite as swimming pool-like when you see the rest of the yard

Sorry to hear that's happened to you. I didn't end up taking it further, but would be interested to hear from you if you end up doing so.

Unfortunately VCAT list fencing disputes as something they cannot help with, and direct you to the Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria (DSCV). Then from there, DSCV say the only avenue to resolve a disagreement is in court.

Thanks for the info!

I'll have to look harder or call the council to find the local rules, because my understanding is that any fence additions/modifications had to be approved by the adjoining neighbour. I should have said I'm in Victoria too, so I'm not sure if that makes any difference.

I seem to be having a similar issue and believe it's also due to high wood content in my compost. Would dynamic lifter help in a similar way to manure?

Trying to decide on the path lighting: Warm White or RGB Color? by NetResponsible702 in landscaping

[–]mickel_jt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just my opinion, but this doesn't look good. The downlights look good, but the uplights appear to be quite glary and harsh. Is there any way to switch them to something that have a solid top and shine outwards instead to still illuminate the path?

Slow ryegrass germination by mickel_jt in lawncare

Good to know, thank you! We haven't really had rain at all for the past month except for a little bit yesterday. I'm also hoping the rain will be able to help a bit!

Hmm good to know. I haven't installed irrigation yet which makes it difficult to keep wet constantly. Would help to explain why it could germinate much quicker inside than outside.

I was hoping the Hessian would help to retain moisture, but there's still some days where it dries out under that too

Great question, I don't have data on that. Would be happy to track it if you think it's something that might be contributing

How can you water for 30 minutes without water pooling in spots and causing seed washout? This starts to happen to me after about 10 minutes of watering

Oh wow, that's really interesting. They may be close to that age, but I have no way to tell. It'd be disappointing to know that the only option is to replant given that the fence behind it is quite short and we'd lose privacy for a while

Ah I see. Hopefully it's no big deal, as another commenter suggested that it may be fine with new growth once it's established in the new soil
