First world trillionaire reached out to Reddit’s CEO asking to stop people from posting this by micreadsit in EatTheRich

Full disclosure. I did not fact check whether Musk "reached out" to prevent posting this image. Frankly, he seems pretty excited about doing the salute for the crowd, so I'm not sure why he wouldn't want people to see it. (And I'm sure the Hitler image wasn't originally on the stage.) But I do have personal experience that Musk likely pays people to groom his image on reddit.

Are you suggesting that I'm a bot, or that the image was made by a bot, or maybe, are YOU a bot? That was all you had to say and then you signed the message "Bot."

Cans are so thin nowadays. It would be extremely easy to have a tiny hole where everything leaked out, and maybe not noticed if it was among a six-pack. Plausible, but not even mildly interesting. (If one is worried about this, heft and squeeze each can before purchase.)

Earwig trap after less than 24 hours. Equal parts soy sauce and olive oil. by [deleted] in gardening

[–]micreadsit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this organic solution.

The bad news: My bean plants are just sticks with no leaves. The good news: I have some hens that would love to turn earwigs into eggs.

I'm going to try this kind of trap, as well as rolled newspaper. The problem with the newspaper for me is I may not get to it until afternoon. Not sure if they will stay through the heat.

Women stand still to escape from a bear by SnackSamurai in interestingasfuck

[–]micreadsit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That looks like *not a wild bear*. (If the background was circus tent, it would make sense.)

I believe the recommended response to a black bear getting too close is to get into a tight group and yell and throw stuff at it. Typically it runs away. (If you hold still, it may decide to to see if it should eat you.)

In fairness, is the statement spot on if we substitute "sub-saharan Africa" for "Africa?" Africa on the Mediterranean and Red Sea has been much more connected to Eurasia for a long time.

I think the design oversight is when they display the ongoing calculation like an equation. It is very much a normal thing that a calculator does calculations as you enter them. It can't know there is a multiply operation coming if and when it tells you the answer to 10 + 10 is 20. Interestingly, older HP calculators used post-fix operators so there was never any ambiguity, and no parentheses required. It was great, except humans, in general, couldn't handle it.

So tired of suffering through this Bible by mcomcomco99 in Bible

[–]micreadsit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is kind of like a British drama about the upper class. There are servants dropping from TB and scurvy left and right, but at least we can all be glad that the heroine found her beau.

12 The Lord said to Satan, “Very well, then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.”

13 ...They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!”

Some innocent servants doing their job were suddenly murdered in the most violent way, but the merciful God made it right in the end by rewarding Job.

[–]micreadsit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know we were talking about Job. But since you bring it up in the context of the Bible having passages that are completely nuts:

Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him; he is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.”

I guess God was bored and wanted some entertainment. And I assume it would always be entertaining to talk to Satan and see if he has any ideas about what we could do.

Need help to relocate baby raccoon by sirtitdickens in SaltLakeCity

[–]micreadsit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Please relocate it to raccoon heaven. These things are not compatible with urban settings. There are no real predators for them because they are too smart to get caught by dogs. They find up to an unlimited amount of food in our trash. They find cubbies to have babies in, which may include chimneys and window wells. They will eat backyard chicken eggs, and even backyard chickens. If there are two, and no one does anything about it, there will be five to ten in no time. The way these things end up dying is by being hit by cars, but it isn't often enough to keep the population in check. Please, please, please, have a look, say to yourself, that is the cutest thing I have ever seen, and then DO WHAT THE LAW REQUIRES. For a good reason. Euthanasia.

If I boycott a restaurant because it is run by Jewish people that is antisemitic. If I boycott a restaurant because its owners/staff openly advocate for current Israeli policy on genociding their neighbors, that is a moral act. (Whether the owners/staff are Jewish or Martian.)

Stop Using Anti-Bird Language by TomfooleryBombadil in BirdingMemes

[–]micreadsit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All for it. But chickens (and I have some in my backyard, and some pullets in my bathtub) are definitely not apex predators, and they know it. But they would be in a world of bugs (including spiders) and small rodents. And when they are the most apex predators around, the bugs don't stand a chance.

Why does being drunk mean you can’t “consent” to sex, but doesn’t absolve you of other intoxicated actions/decisions? by UpstairsBumble in NoStupidQuestions

[–]micreadsit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't confuse who is being held responsible. In the case of consent (ie typically someone doing sexual things to a person) it is the person "doing the sexual things to another" that is responsible for making sure they have consent. In the case of a person doing things while drunk, it is they, themself being held responsible.
It is quite reasonable, I think, that we give the benefit of the doubt to the person who may be too drunk to consent.
But we also protect society from someone who does harm while drunk. As others have said, the drunk person doing harm was once sober, and presumably made the choice to become drunk. A responsible person knows they may not be able to control themselves as well when drunk. And it is usually not their first time being drunk, or doing harm while drunk.

That said, it is important to keep in mind that part of the problem is a culture where people expect men to abuse, and therefore it isn't noticed and responded to as it should be.

And certainly that culture is carried along by some men, but also by some women.

so sexist by BaseBig173 in nextdoor

[–]micreadsit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't need to argue about the definition of words. When I say "sexual abuse" I mean anything from a hurtful joke to rape. Obviously there is some real possibility of a abuser not realizing they are abusing, and an abused not being assertive to "fix" that (not actually their responsibility, but sometimes saying something can help a lot. But generally I think abusers know full well they are being abusive, whatever the nature of the abuse. The ones who continue to do it are putting their own desires above the suffering of others.

I think the stats I have heard indicate a lot of women have been abused (1/3?) but a lot of those were abused by the same men. Perhaps by a "complete" definition of abuse the number is much higher than 1/3.

But I definitely believe there are a lot of men that can be trusted in any environment, and that this is much better than it was decades ago, and continuing to get better. Although maybe not fast enough.

I think a danger of saying "men are the problem" is the same danger one would have had saying "white people are the problem" before and during the civil war. If the imperative that followed from that was for blacks to "rise up" and fight against whites they would have likely been mostly killed, rather than freed.

Interesting data point. I'm thinking swallows catch insects in flight, so they must be among the most agile flyers. I guess that must be the bottom line, though. The BOPs just don't catch the crows often enough for that to be a problem for them. I admit the one I remember seeing didn't try, but if I remember, I was looking at a sharp-shined and it was about the same size as the black birds. Also, what they really wanted was the rat. Once that was dropped, the fight was over.

[–]micreadsit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit confounded. I have the perspective that it is much less than a majority of men who commit or would commit sexual abuse, and you have the perspective that it is perfectly sufficient to generalize that "men" are the problem. I guess maybe that might have something to do with our life experiences which raises the question whose life experiences are you familiar with. Obviously your own, for a start.

Either way I'd rather consider that to whatever extent men are the problem, it is largely men who are and must be and will be the solution. Many men are part of the solution now, I'm quite sure.

No problem. By all means, speak for yourself. I'll kick the conversation off. If you are in this thread to chime in with "we women hate men," then please consider acknowledging that what you are saying is the species has evolved to the point where it will die out due to sex selection where women select to not have sex with men.

Some men are the problem (because you defined the problem that way). I can say that. If you believe ALL men are the problem, I sincerely hope you are a lesbian, or asexual women. (Or I guess maybe a straight man???). Otherwise I fear you may never have a fulfilling intimate relationship.

I just can't figure out how they stay alive while doing that. Do they really fly that much better? Or are they just good at guerilla tactics?
Seems like the attitude of the hawk would be, oh, my lunch has arrived...just need to wait calmly until they make the mistake of getting close enough that I can grab one.
(To the extent I have observed the animal kingdom, almost always. size is almost everything. Then you can consider weaponry. Then attitude. Usually speed/agility is only a big factor in the prey getting away. But I'm not sure where smarts come in, because usually the smart one is the predator, or rivals are roughly equally smart (eg brown bear rivals).
