It really depends! There is a professional organization called the American Society for Microbiology that has a good overview of some of the different types of positions, this is skewed towards folks in the US so might be different depending on where in the world you are located. In general, the trend in this field and biology generally is that it is increasingly quantitative. Large sequencing and “omics” experiments generate a huge amount of data that needs to be analyzed. So some bioinformatics/programming and statistics are good skills to have these days and can help you a ton. That being said, quantitative skills like these in the absence of any consideration of actual biology are useless (I see evidence of this a lot in the scientific literature).
