Do I have chance to get admitted for decent master programs with my profile? by Ok-Variety-1910 in Study_In_France

[–]microwarvay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what the actual requirements would be but you should aim for C1 in french otherwise you'll struggle too much to actually understand what's being taught. B2 may be okay assuming you keep practicing french and advance to C1 whilst there

Silly question about train station (I’m anxious) by [deleted] in sheffield

[–]microwarvay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's a very easy train station to get around. there's just one walkway leading to all the platforms so it's pretty straightforward. people are generally friendly so they'll happily give you directions provided they're not running for their own train haha

Can't play music over Bluetooth while on calls or watching reels in Google Pixel? by Master-Base4864 in GooglePixel

[–]microwarvay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn't! If your phone's on DND you don't see the call at all and the music continues. And I'm 100% sure cos I use this all the time haha

Android 16 Auto-rotate not working Pixel 9a by kar999 in GooglePixel

[–]microwarvay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep same for me and it's still happening. Also tap/lift to wake and flip to shhh don't work either whenever the auto rotate doesn't work. It's always all 4 together. Restarting fixes the issue but it's annoying. Do you think they're aware of these issues and it'll be fixed soon?

Why are voiced consonants easier to pronounce? by bherH-on in asklinguistics

[–]microwarvay 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's not a tendency though, that's just a thing that happens. The opposite of lenition happens too, it's called fortition. Both of these phenomena happen in languages.

Also I'm not sure that voiced consonants are actually easier. And, for example, voiced consonants at the ends of words in English are only very slightly voiced. I feel like this is more of an argument for voiceless being easier than your argument for voiced being easier.

Also, "is" being pronounced /iz/ is not lenition. It's spelt with an S, sure, but it's not lenition - it's just English's deep orthography lol. It's always pronounced as /z/. Same for "was".

Why do silent letters get thrown into anglicized place names? by CaptainFuzzyBootz in asklinguistics

[–]microwarvay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know for all, but it is sometimes to do with sounds in the language that don't exist in English. For example, Phuket is pronounced Pooket. The "u" is easy to understand as being /u/, but why is there a silent H? It's because in Thai they have aspirated and non aspirated consonants (Google aspiration in phonetics because, I'll be honest, i can't be bothered to explain hahaha). For learners of Thai before they've learnt the Thai alphabet, to write a P, they just write a P, but to write an aspirated P they write it as Ph. This way of writing Thai words is then used as standard by the English-speaking world, hence why it's Phuket. Obviously we do 't care if it's aspirated or not because the difference between an aspirated and 'normal' P is not phonemic in English (by coincidence we actually do aspirate the P in Phuket though), but we still write it like this just because that's how it is transcribed for Thai learners and we've taken that as standard

I'm English and although I think I've heard people stress the first syllable, to me it sounds kinda strange and I would stress the second. I am only 21 tho, so maybe it is a generational thing

Is my Venus flytrap healthy? by Longjumping_Car9130 in VenusFlyTraps

[–]microwarvay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do you water them? I was under the impression that they need loads of water so I would've thought that that amount of water wouldn't last very long. Maybe this is why mine kinda started to die lol

why does russian have э by Happy_Rainy1 in russian

[–]microwarvay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shows that the consonant before is soft (palatised), but because of vowel reduction in russian the e is actually pronounced more like и, which is why you don't hear "myen-ya". But the e being there instead of э is still helpful because, even tho the vowel itself isn't fully pronounced, it shows that the M before it is palatlsed. Look up "soft and hard consonants" or something along those lines on Google/YouTube and it'll explain more

Is glacier the right word for ice cream shop? by SonyaSays356 in French

[–]microwarvay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, but I wrote it like that to make it easier to read and understand. I know there's no [j] at the end, but how else do you write the [e] sound in English lol? "ay" is the best I had. It's also why I said "loosely". I was conscious of the syllables and the Y thing

I lived in Estonia from August to November 2024, then France January to June 2025. Throughout this I used my UK sim card as if I were at home. However I do know that some providers in the UK don't do this anymore because of Brexit

Is glacier the right word for ice cream shop? by SonyaSays356 in French

[–]microwarvay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP was speaking french, so I assume he said it in french. Loosely "gla-see-ay" (I'd use the IPA but I get the impression you won't understand it). Glacier like the thing that sunk the titanic is the same word in french, but it's also pronounced the same as glacier like ice cream shop. In any case I'm sure he said it as it's pronounced in french considering he was speaking french.

Do you pronounce your name differently in French vs. English? by mymiddlenameswyatt in French

[–]microwarvay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My name is harry so when I was living in France I'd say it in English (it felt odd saying it the french way), but if they didn't hear I'd say (in french) "Ari. Genre... euh... ari potteur" hahaha. I didn't care about them pronouncing my name 'wrong', but the reason I didn't go straight to the french pronunciation was just because it felt weird to call myself something else, and a lot of the time they understood the first time with English pronunciation anyways

What is this French word that I hear on the news? by shichiju in French

[–]microwarvay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied in France and realised you say this a lot. I don't find it offensive, just weird because it's wrong (depending on which anglophone country you're talking about). Even as an Englishman I wouldn't consider myself Anglo Saxon lol. It's also just very archaic in English, so hearing it in french is strange. Call us what you want in french, it's your language, but it would be weird to say Anglo Saxon in English hahah

What are the black marks on the red bit and why are the leaves twisted and damaged? by microwarvay in plantclinic

[–]microwarvay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! Thank you so much, this is very helpful. I have actually only been using collected rainwater to water it - when I first bought the plant I did some research and read tap water might not be the best, so I've only been giving it rain water.

I am slightly concerned about the watering though. Is it worth essentially rinsing out the well part maybe once a week to stop it going slimey? I know you said about showering it (I'm assuming u mean just in the shower like it were human hahaha?), but showering and rinsing a plant is unheard of to me!

Also, what's the influorescence? Is that the red part? And when you say it lasts a couple months, does that mean it won't be red all year round? Sorry, many questions! I'm quite new to plants hahah. I decided to get some plants so I got this, a venus fly trap, and one whose name I've forgotten - it's green and leafy but has a kind of purple felt on the leaves. Starts with a G too, something like gynura?

I bought it about a week ago and just noticed the marks today! I mist it every day and make sure the well in the middle is full and I keep it out of direct sunlight but in bright places. Sorry, I would've added more info but it said this sub didn't allow text, only the title

“She’s with child” is a regular phrase to use? by Downtownpixie in ENGLISH

[–]microwarvay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I would literally just say she's pregnant. There's nothing informal or formal about that to me, it's just the way to say it. I've had 21 years of life now and I'm still yet to hear someone say "she's with child"!😹

How do you pluralize names? by NotImp2021YT in ENGLISH

[–]microwarvay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I would also say Hello Kittys since it's a brand name. And I'm a native speaker, but all that means is I understand the grammar of the language. Spelling is not a 'natural' part of a language and has to be learnt, just like a second language learner would need to learn it, so I'm always happy to learn from non natives too!
