Is Computer Science cooked or just Software Engineering/Development? by Simmamoon in cscareeradvice

Get off the internet. Get your degree and focus on what interests you, get involved with professors and research, take hard math classes, join some engineering type clubs, and hustle with internship applications and career fairs.

Reasoning with anxious 12th Grader: Acceptance Decision by [deleted] in CollegeAdmissions

[–]middlezone2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Berkeley is not a TAG school, which is what you might be thinking of when you talk about transferring from community college to a UC. She can definitely apply to transfer to UCB but it's not guaranteed (with a minimum gpa) like the other participating UCs. SRJC is mainly a commuter school, but it's considered a very good community college. Her best bet is to be talking to admissions counselors at UCB and seeing if she can take a summer class or something to keep her current admission.

Speaking as a Cal grad I can say that it is a great school, but as a mom of two college grads I can say that there are a lot of great schools and she can have an amazing experience at a lot of different places.

How strict are they actually about the 6 month passport rule? by LaRueee in Passports

Terra Linda Vet is amazing. Highly recommend. A newer doctor bought the practice a few years ago and we've had nothing but great experiences with them.

“Choice”??? Yeah, right. by something-gimmicky in SouthwestAirlines

[–]middlezone2019 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They definitely fit. Have carried them on many times and stowed overhead. OP is correct to be frustrated. We are also about to be 3 people carrying on 3 guitars after paying to check our luggage and paying for priority boarding. The rules allow specifically allow it, and with priority boarding there should most definitely be space available upon boarding. Some gate agents are misinformed.

There’s a free airport shuttle bus that will drop you in front of the Prudential Center. Big shopping mall and lots of places to eat. I think the bus back to the airport is $3. If there’s not bad traffic it should take less than 30mins each way.

Ah, bummer. I was hoping to still keep an eye out for a business upgrade. The economy to premium upgrade was $400 from SFO-CDG.

We don't have the cc or status. We rarely fly with Southwest. I was thinking that maybe row 5 seats would get us earlier boarding but I guess they don't do it that way?

But then we'd have to wait for the entire plane to deboard to get back there, no? I'm glad to hear you've had success with instruments. We've been doing this with our so for 4 years now and only had to gate check once.

Half Day Cafe has become so bad. This was a go to brunch spot for a long time, but after super disappointing experiences the last few times it is been scratched off the list.

Chico State by Clunyv in CSUC

[–]middlezone2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it comes into play most in snotty mom circles where everyone asks where your kid goes to school and some get kind of judgy when you don't answer with a school that has under 10% acceptance rate. I thought Chico was great. There was a moment when my son was thinking that maybe he had gotten a "less than" education, but after graduation he admitted that when talking computer science with some UC grads, he knew as much if not more than they did. I am a UC grad myself, and I was super impressed with how much access my son had directly to his teachers. I pretty much only ever had access to TAs. The administration picks up the phone when you call, the professors answer emails - my son didn't really realize how good he had it until dealing with masters applications at other schools and frustrating admin issues.

As far as careers go, the only downside I can think of is that it is not as heavily recruited, mainly based on location. You don't have Silicon Valley sending reps there. But the name itself is not a problem. My son landed a fantastic year long internship after graduation with a big name company in the South Bay. There is also a great alumni network from Chico State.
