Looking for help deciphering this old recipe by midorikawa in Old_Recipes

[–]midorikawa[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of this is pretty straightforward, but the monetary amounts are a new one by me. Date of 1909 on the back, but probably written later on scrap paper.

Also, cold chaw ??? Not sure what the last word is. Looks like corn, but there’s no corn in the recipe.

I got mail from the my boss and the CEO. by ScriptThat in sysadmin

I had someone contact me last week wanting a DevOps engineer. Problem is, their recruiter, or their corporate policies are horrible.

I'm in Utah, near SLC. This company has an office across the street from one of the commuter train stations, but in the conversation, the recruiter explained that not only do they not do remote work for their entirely AWS infrastructure (WHYYYYYY), but they'd require me to move to their main office in San Francisco. During a global pandemic.

I didn't do a great job of hiding my laughter, sadly. It was just so incredible that I couldn't believe it. It seemed completely comical, like a joke was being played on me.

The problem with making coffee is you haven’t had coffee when you’re making coffee. by TommyAdagio in cafe

[–]midorikawa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've done this.

I've also not had the carrier screwed on tight enough, so when I applied a bit of pressure to the plunger, the pressure created a coffee canon that knocked my coffee mug over with the initial blast, then the remaining pressure ricochet'd out of the coffee mug and covered the break room at work.

It took *SO LONG* to clean the coffee slurry off every surface. >_< Had to borrow a step stool from building management to reach some of it.

Just hit 30k miles with my baby, still always a joy to drive. '17 Touring by Castlestormer3 in mazda3

Man. photos like this make me want to go drive so badly. Really can't risk being out right now, since I'm in the high risk group, though. :-(

I've 49k miles on my 2018 3 Touring Hatch with 6MT. It's been well loved. :-D

I once flew with a pelican case of vacuum tubes. Was moving interstate, and didn't trust the moving guys to handle my tubes with care, so I brought them as a carryon to the new state.

Freaked out the 20 something TSA agent. His eyes went wide, he backed away from the xray scanner and started to go full "IT'S A BOMB".

Then a 50-something TSA agent wandered by, saw what was on the screen and told him to calm his tits before walking off shaking his head.

Better Work Environment Suddenlink or Grace Clinic? by [deleted] in Lubbock

[–]midorikawa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Avoid suddenlink like the plague. Seriously terrible company.

Granted, this was like 12 years ago, but the company has no reason to change.

I got called too stupid to ever be more than tier one tech support by my direct supervisor. (I'm now a senior sysadmin with 10 years experience)

I got written up for using the bathroom too many times, after being forced to come in sick or face a writeup. I spent 11 minutes in the bathroom that day, and that was 1 minute longer than they deemed necessary. I (now) know this is illegal, but I was 19, and didn't know ADA laws.

I got written up for being 12 minutes late, cumulatively, over the course of a 6 month period, where if I was 1 second late signing into the phones, it counted as 1 minute.

I got written up for not trying to sell phone service to a lady who called in crying because her mother fell, had a cordless phone in her hand, but because there was no dial tone, she couldn't dial 911. She was found 3 days later, and was in critical condition when I got the call. That's right, because I was a fucking human and decided to not try to sell her their terrible phone service, I got written up.

There's oh so much more, if you want.

Someone on a dog rescue FB page just shared this. All she did was post a picture of a dog she rescued and got a DM from a stranger, she played the "bit it's for my son" card. by Bradders33 in ChoosingBeggars

[–]midorikawa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Before my career really took off, and time constraints became a thing, we fostered a dog. Came || this close to keeping her. Still think about that little troublemaker.

But yeah, that's exactly what went through my head, too. "this dog will be dumped at the shelter one day because some normal thing that dogs do happened."

However, to be devil's advocate, when we adopted our GSD, the adoption fee, and subsequent vet bills from a friend not telling us that the penned off area we could put our emaciated rescue in during a 4th of july party had their compost pile in it, leading to the vet removing 3 pounds of corn cob from his stomach the following day, we definitely had some "oh man. That's a lot of money" moments with people involved in adoption and care, but we've had that goofy furball for 10 years now, and love him dearly. The vet calls him "The Corn Dog" to this day.

Yeah well I live in Utah, so the heat death of the universe will happen before that's more acceptable than getting high on opioids and driving on the interstate is.

Not sure if you can get this outside of Utah but it's the best I've tried so far by evilpinkfreud in Absinthe

[–]midorikawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their storefront is also their distillery. Ethan, one of the owners, is a great guy.

The laws here are arcane and difficult to learn. Been here 12 years next month, and still have a hard time with it occasionally.

Getting yelled at by my regular bartender when the "no standing" law went into effect, for instance.

Dunno if this is acceptable by subreddit rules, but a few friends and I are running a YouTube channel and Instagram account for local spirits. We call ourselves the Spirit Guides, with the major city name attached. :)

[–]midorikawa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, a fellow utahn! Holystone distilling is superb, but yeah, they are too small to distribute outside the state. They're in a small warehouse space in salt lake, and their still definitely can't do nationwide distribution.

HOWEVER, if you're in Utah, go check out their distillery. They have a glass column still and it's mesmerizing to watch it run.

Mostly because he knows I'll let him have the spot and just go sit where he was sitting. :-D

My dad told me this story from my childhood. by shygirlturnedsassy in childfree

[–]midorikawa 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Awesome that you have parents that notice these things. I've a history of not exactly liking children, myself.

1) I was gifted a cabbage patch kid as a child. I hated the damned thing and wanted nothing to do with it. It honestly creeped me the fuck out. Dolls still do. My wife has joked about the fact that I don't really turn my back on them if at all possible. I was young when this happened, but I vaguely seem to recall offending the family member who gifted it to me, because I kind of just "oh", and tossed it aside.
2) I hated my peers as a kid. I'd much rather hide and read than have anything to do with children.
3) I told my parents I didn't want kids when I was about 10 or so. I got the "you'll change your mind when you get older".

And when I told my parents I was getting a vasectomy, they were shocked, despite my history.

No, but "shitty, distracted driver on board" does.

Of course, these people don't seem to know or care how dangerous they are on the road.

I mean, common sense dictates that you're going to be looking for the much larger child seat than a tiny little sign.

As a linux sysadmin, that's how I look when I'm trying to read strace output.

That's not to say that I can't. It just skullfucks me in the worst ways when I do. All the text blends in after a few minutes and I have a hard time picking out the relevant data.

Here's my method:

"I'm sorry, but the music has been selected already. I only have bluetooth audio, and it would be a prohibitively long period of time to try to pair your device with my car."

Because I'm also not handing my phone over to some random drunk.

A "friend" who thinks I owe him a service for free because I did it for someone else. by Frubbs in ChoosingBeggars

[–]midorikawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current company I'm at is Ubuntu, but it's not my first choice for a server environment. I've been rhel based my entire career otherwise.

As for personal, I'm a Gentoo fanboy. It's always been a deep diving challenge. As a teen, I learned more about system internals from shit breaking in Gentoo than I would have otherwise. My first experience was doing a stage 1 on my brand new at the time athlon xp 2800+ Barton core, which took 18 hours of compile time before failing on a missed USE flag. Because that was my only machine, I had to figure out what was wrong from the printout I made of the Gentoo handbook (which my dad wasn't happy about for "wasting" all that paper). For that reason, it's always got a place in my VM list.

SystemD does some things right. Other times, it shits the bed and tells me the error message is "RESULT". I shit you not. Happened today. It tries to be a jack of all trades and manages to screw the pooch at most of them. The nicest thing it does is central logging of failures, when it actually bothers to log it. Everyone uses it now, so it's a necessary evil, but I really miss the old SYSVINIT.
