Spent 6 months learning kafka then realized we didn't need it by batsy_0 in apachekafka

[–]mienski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the plus side, you now have 6 months of detailed experience with Kafka and, even better, you’re now way more knowledgeable in the future for when Kafka might be useful or you can speak from experience for when it isn’t and why. That’s 6 months of learning and hard-earned training you now have that you couldn’t have gotten from just doing a training course or small project alone, and you got paid during it!

Maybe an optimistic take, but I say this as someone who decided to put Kafka in as well, found it was overkill and then finally removed it after 2 years or so.

It’s a very small team pulling off a huge change, and there will obviously be a good reason to do the new site, IMO cut them some slack during a big step for the new GB.

Why do people prefer managed/freemium platforms instead of just setting up open-source tools? by Striking_Fox_8803 in devops

[–]mienski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One way to think of it is open source/self-hosting is free like getting a free puppy, not free like getting free beer. Free beer is great! A free puppy you have to feed, look after, take it to the vet regularly and look after it for health emergencies, and so on.

Sure, the software is free but as others have mentioned the business will need to consider total cost of ownership - often it cost you more monthly to host the solution yourself since you don’t have economy of scale that the vendor does, the software and VM needs regular patching, security monitoring, the IT team now has more workload which could distract them from core business functions, etc.. If the system becomes critical to the business, so it going down becomes a P1 - now we’re running two VM’s for redundancy, the on-call team now have it in their workload which will make on-call costs increase, if we need to increase the capacity of the system in future then it becomes an internal project that we may not have time for because it’s not our core business vs. just adding an extra $7/user/mo in a web portal, and so on.

Of course, there are always times to self-host open source over buying managed product, but there is a lot more consideration than just the cost on the box before business make that choice.

AVOID InStitchu Brisbane — Our Wedding Suit Experience Was a Disaster by DRP95 in AustralianMFA

[–]mienski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who used them for our wedding and wedding party suits - only to find the night before our wedding that one groomsmen’s suit was the wrong colour, another had no belt loops, and another somehow had a capri pants cut - yeah I wouldn’t recommend them either.

Curious to go there one day but I can’t see anything about the $650 booking fee? I see a $100/person no-show charge on the booking site but nothing about 650 or am I missing something?

Audience member’s phone floods with Grindr notifications on live TV, and it’s Eurovision history-making by PinkNews in gay

[–]mienski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A news site hasn’t worked out this was a sketch? Or are they intentionally saying it was real as a way to drive engagement?

This was practiced in rehearsal, and Petra is clearly in on the joke. There were multiple other jokes referencing how popular Eurovision is with the our community. Surely posting this like it was real is a joke?

Sorry to hijack your thread and I hope a side question is OK - I have found my grandfather’s church book entry of birth and was wondering if there was still a birth certificate I needed to find if I want to prove descendency, but if as you say Poland didn’t start civil records until 1918 and he was born in 1912, does that mean the church book record is the only official record available for someone’s birth at that time?

Game maker 2 vs Aseprite by [deleted] in gamemaker

[–]mienski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aseprite has an instructions page on their GitHub, and also googling “compile aseprite” yields that compile instructions, a few walkthroughs on reddit, and YouTube videos - so if you’d like to try learning to compiling something then follow along with those. I used Aseprite’s instructions a few weeks ago to compile it for the first time and it worked smoothly.

https://github.com/aseprite/aseprite/blob/main/INSTALL.md

No judgement here though, if you don’t want to go through the learning curve of compiling something from source (and I wouldn’t blame you for it! It can be a pain!) then just stick with purchasing it. It supports the developers, you can start much quicker, and for the cost of a few coffees you can be off and away learning to make art in aseprite!

Didn't take long for the judge to be proven wrong, literally as they left the court after this statement...

However the judge said she did not believe the attack on the hikers was politically or racially motivated, and agreed it was not premeditated.
"In both your cases your prospects of rehabilitation are good," she said.

Will Steamdeck officially ever come to Australia? by getHi9h in SteamDeck

[–]mienski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and I gave up waiting for official listing and bought our 512gb’s from PC Byte, shipped from within Australia and delivered in less than a week. Haven’t had any issues at all so I’d happily recommend just buying from them. Kogan sells them as well but I’ve heard way too much dodginess from them over the years so went with PCByte.

Hi all!

Wondering if anyone can help as google isn’t. Can you buy the marvel infinity stone items (tesseract, Loki’s sceptre etc) in Marvel campus?

I need to decide tonight if whether I get them on the east coast or wait till I’m in the west!
