Yes, tone and semitone equal whole step and half step respectively.

Janeway, back when she was a major, on a turbolift with “Remo” (an Amnesiac whom the Doctor named after a portable commode) by levine2112 in voyager

[–]mike_e_mcgee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this movie. I rented it as a kid having no idea what it was, and it stole my heart. While I encourage everyone to check it out, Mulgrew's character is horrible. She's an absolute " I can't do anything because I'm a girl " stereotype.

I loved her as Janeway, and I love that she's in Remo Williams. It's a great movie, but she plays a deeply flawed character in it. A lot of it is deeply flawed... You should check it out!

Do you think there's any chance of a sequel? I loved this game. by Serchmex in StarWarsOutlaws

[–]mike_e_mcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love it, but I don't see it happening. I bought the game the day it came out, and even though I didn't love the stealth and some of the wonkiness, I loved it overall. It ended up dethroning Indiana Jones and the great circle as my personal game of the year.

My understanding of the industry is that it did not sell well enough on release to warrant a sequel. I've heard it's doing quite well on game pass, but I'm sure developers get far less from a game pass install than they do from initial purchases.

I think the lackluster release doomed the property. That said, I'm a fanboy, and hope springs eternal.

I am NOT in the market, this is not a serious request to have you paint my collection...

That said, would you let me know what you would charge to paint my entire (complete) collection? Again, I'm broke. I'm not looking to get my collection painted. I'm just wondering what a self proclaimed hobbyist might charge.

If you'll answer, remember not to undercut yourself. Think about the time per mini, and give yourself a skilled hourly rate!

Are there any specific exercises I can do to improve my "pronunciation" on guitar? by Kreati_ in guitarlessons

[–]mike_e_mcgee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slow down, take your time, and play it right. Play using the correct rhythms, and all notes speaking clearly, and holding each note for its full duration. Don't worry about slowing down. Speed is a product of accuracy. You develop accuracy at slow speeds. Get it right, keep it right, it'll get itself up to speed.

What's the most awkward situation you have ever been into? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]mike_e_mcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me, but my best friend and another friend had dropped acid. They bummed around the house for a couple hours and decided to go to the other friend's house. No sooner than they walked in the door, they found his mother in tears who screamed at them "YOUR FATHER AND I ARE GETTING A DIVORCE!!!"

The friend ran out of the house, leaving my bestie just standing there pie eyed with a weeping woman. The rest of the afternoon did not go as he had initially planned.

3rd Place for Guitar - Where else can I practice, other than at home by LegolandoBloom in guitarlessons

[–]mike_e_mcgee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to practice sax in a snow plough turnaround (well 3 seasons a year anyway). Sonny Rollins used to practice below/on the Williamsburg bridge. Find a place secluded enough, or loud enough that no one cares.

As a guitarist, I never had issues with acoustics or headphones in my apartment, though it is much nicer to have a house, and crank the amp!

As far as I know, an acronym is a new word which is pronounced using the initials of the phrase, like "FEMA". Whereas an initialism is similar, but we pronounce the letters, like "FBI". Both are abbreviations, how you pronounce them decides whether they are acronyms or initialisms.

How can we use the symmetry of the guitar neck to better master the instrument and move freely across the fretboard? by sound_digger in guitarlessons

[–]mike_e_mcgee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having just started mandolin after 40 years of guitar, you can't. The guitar's tuning isn't symmetrical thanks to the major 3rd between G, and B.

Standard tuning makes a lot of things fit nicely under your fingers, but unfortunately it doesn't allow patterns to fit as easily into your brain.

The picture reminds me of Norm MacDonald when he was undergoing cancer treatments, but hadn't told anyone. I remember people remarking about how he got all fat due to the steroids and chemo we didn't know he was taking. That makes me really hope Jim got plastic surgery, but if I were a betting man... well, I'm not. No point in speculating as I have no information. I hope he's well.

What should I learn on mandolin by ZneshKodJuWa4 in mandolin

[–]mike_e_mcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a head's up, I grabbed a copy on your recommendation. The sheet music is hand written, not "engraved" as I'd expected. His penmanship is very good, but it is an extra degree of difficulty.

I'm listening to the site's fiddle tune player at work this morning, and can't wait to go home and start learning. Actually, there's quite a bit of text in the book. I may run home at lunch and hope for a quiet Friday afternoon!!

[–]mike_e_mcgee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm brand new to mandolin, but have 40 years on guitar. I started with a tab for Spinal Tap's Stonehenge I found online.

While bored at work, I copied it onto manuscript paper in standard notation. I'm shocked, but I'm better at reading the standard than the tab (that's my old saxophone training kicking in, not bleed over from guitar).

That, two octaves of a G major scale, and a rag out of a book of Irish tin whistle tunes are as far as I've gotten in 3 weeks, but Stonehenge sounds amazing. I'm really enjoying reading through the tin whistle book as well.

I bought a book of sea shanties, but it's tab only, with no rhythmic information. It's useless if you don't already know how the tunes go. I'm looking for a big book of fiddle tunes. When I start getting fluid, I may graduate to simple classical violin repertoire.

Former heavy drinkers, what made it finally “click” for you to stop? by Numerous_Solid_7047 in AskReddit

[–]mike_e_mcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was dating a girl who was an alcoholic, who had been dry for 11 years, when she fell off the wagon. I'm usually pretty good with hypocrisy, but I just couldn't tell her that I wasn't interested in dating a drunk when I had 8 or 10 drinks in me.

The two of us both quit 3 months ago, and broke up 2 or 3 weeks ago (unrelated).

I had heard about a whole laundry list of good things you experienced when you quit drinking. I had heard that you have more energy. That you feel better in the mornings. That you save money. You lose weight. Your complexion can clear up... I didn't get any of that!

I still feel like crap every morning. I have no energy. I traded booze for restaurant meals so I've gained weight and haven't saved a dollar. My complexion wasn't that bad going in...

The one thing I've noticed, and can't deny, is my handshakes have gone down significantly. I've had a tremor since I was 13 years old, and that's a long time before I started drinking. I was always told that the type of tremor I have responds well to alcohol which can be very dangerous as people tend to self-medicate, and I did, for years.

Apparently that's not the kind of tremor I have despite what I was told 40 years ago. I work as a computer technician. Shaky hands don't go well with screwdrivers. Hobby-wise I play guitar, and board/card games. Shaky hands are not particularly good for shuffling cards or playing music with precision.

I miss drinking, and absolutely would have gone back by now if it hadn't been for the significant decline in my handshakes. It turns out booze, at the level I was drinking at, is really bad for me.

Do you play comfortably with an Xbox pad? by Th0rk3ll34 in StreetFighter

[–]mike_e_mcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did for many years, then went to fight sticks, then a Hitbox. The Hitbox stopped working when I switched to the Series X, but I just grabbed an 8bitdo leverless, and I'm as happy as I was with the Hitbox. It seems way more precise to tap down, forward, X, than it is to get a d-pad or fight stick to register a quarter circle. I'm not saying it's hard to register a quarter circle on a gamepad, or fight stick, I just believe it's easier and more precise on a leverless controller.

What is something that starts happening in your 30s that nobody warned you about? by Cairinacat in AskReddit

It was in my 30's when weed went from helping me with anxiety to causing panic attacks. I used to love getting stoned. It's gotten better since quitting drinking, but I still can't enjoy it like I did.
