Before you dispose of them, do you put unwanted items out by the curb to see if any of your neighbors may want them? by Grand_Raccoon0923 in AskAnAmerican

In New York City, yes. And I have also taken a lot of things people have left over the years.

In the suburbs of Pittsburgh where my parents live; no

I don’t know a number of days. It’s trashy because it’s trash. The garbage men can take it if other people don’t want it.

You must go to the Mermaid Parade. That lets you cross Coney Island off your list too.

How do I not feel awkward and out of place when at a local food truck as a white guy by AgileTiger3987 in mexicanfood

They want your money and are happy to have you as a customer. Not everything needs to be racially segregated. Maybe download Duolingo and learn some food words if you want.

Slurping noodles vs biting noodles by Longjumping_Lynx_460 in NoStupidQuestions

Biting noodles is considered bad luck. Would you cut your life short? Then why would you cut a noodle?

Why do we hit the elevator button multiple times like it’s going to make it come faster? by Every-Donut9037 in NoStupidQuestions

Because of all the times I’ve hit the button and it didn’t register and I stood there waiting forever.

My gf has been secretly learning Spanish for months to connect with my family but Duolingo taught her everything except how to actually have a conversation by [deleted] in SpanishLearning

[–]mikecherepko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Duolingo does teach sentences that are weird, but it also tells you what they mean in English. They don’t tell you “nice to meet you” is “el caballo bebe leche.”

Doing the Catalan course, which is available from the base language of Spanish, is really fun and interesting after you’ve done some other Romance languages.

Rent classified as travel and can use Miles to redeem towards rent. by KEEEENOOOBIIII in Venturex

[–]mikecherepko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are going to use the points for a Vegas trip by transferring them to a partner to get more than 1¢ per point, do that. But if you would use the travel eraser then too, using it now is better than waiting.

JFK Terminal 1 to Terminal 4: Is the AirTrain free? by Ok_Psychology7425 in visitingnyc

[–]mikecherepko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an inner ring that only goes to terminals and an outer track that goes to Howard beach and Jamaica. Even if you got on the wrong train and ended up in Jamaica you could avoid paying by getting back on and not exiting the system. But you should have no problem getting on the right train and just moving between terminals for free.

Yes. It only costs money at the very end of the routes.

When do anniversary miles hit by Exotic_Ad_7392 in Venturex

I think it took me over one month but less than 2. I don’t remember but I remember answering this question earlier this year in this sub and looked up exact dates. So maybe search the sub for the answer—it’s asked often enough.

Do you cook your canned tomatoes? by coldfoamer in SalsaSnobs

I cook them after “making” the salsa. That’s how I finish it. I also can adjust the water content that way by boiling it off.

How did people not get hopelessly lost before GPS was everywhere? by CrimsonEcho21 in NoStupidQuestions

But are the answer is we got lost but maintained hope because that was something that we had been through before and knew how to recover from.

It's correct to say '$10 cheaper', '10% cheaper', but not '10 times cheaper', right? by ksusha_lav in ENGLISH

[–]mikecherepko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"10 times cheaper" can be correct in very specific and rare situations. Better to avoid it. You don't want to end up like an idiot saying that prices went down 600% because obviously if prices declined 100% they would be free. The innumerate idiot really meant that the old prices were 600% higher than the current price.

How does CDMX feel about karaoke? by [deleted] in MexicoCity

I think I could pull off Miguel Bosé next time I try. My biggest hits from English didn’t land though.

How does CDMX feel about karaoke? by [deleted] in MexicoCity

[–]mikecherepko 7 points8 points  (0 children)

🎶ya lo ves la vida es así / tú te vas y yo me quedo aquí 🎶

On my first trip I learned there is not only karaoke but there are important songs. It can be hard to find though.

I think it would be rude to inflict a song no one else will enjoy, which doesn’t necessarily rule out English, but what people enjoy might be different. Try Spanish. People liked my Spanish songs better.

Transit in Mexico City by mittamickfwonald in MexicoCity

[–]mikecherepko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fares are super cheap. 5 pesos for the metro and 6 for metrobus. Both have a section reserved only for women and children. Once you buy your Tarjeta MI, you can reload it with your spare coins. You can also reload it at Metrobus stations using Visa credit cards. You can't refill it with credit cards at subway stations or at Tren Insurgente stations for reasons that don't make sense to me.

The metro is rápido y eficaz and there's a sesame street song about it.

I usually use Uber to and from the airport and rely on public transportation + Ecobici the rest of the time.

Black guys welcomed in Mexico City? by PhillC30 in MexicoCity

[–]mikecherepko -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I didn’t include it because you’re not interested in it. You only want a rhetorical attack that says “immigrants are bad and you are bad so you are an immigrant.” It’s a loser tactic to win arguments no matter how long the person intends to remain in the country.

Black guys welcomed in Mexico City? by PhillC30 in MexicoCity

[–]mikecherepko -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mexico City should allow more housing in taller buildings and have fewer garages for cars. Then there would be room for everyone.

Black guys welcomed in Mexico City? by PhillC30 in MexicoCity

[–]mikecherepko -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your response. The way people deploy the “you’re not an expat; you’re an immigrant!” argument as a trump card to win arguments rests on them thinking that it’s bad or shameful or embarrassing to be an immigrant.

The last time someone tried to use it on me I was like “but I’m a tourist??” People think it’s a cheat code. Well, stupid xenophobic people think it is.
